I first saw this film when I was a kid, and BBC 2 (I think) were showing a series of Monster/Horror films. I have a soft spot for the movie, but for a very nerdy reason. When the reports first come through about disturbances off the Irish coast, the navy, scientists and jerks head out there to see what's going on. They ask the stereo-typed Irish fishermen what is going on, and the fishermen reply in Gaelic. The 'heroes' ask what was said, and they are told that what was said was, "We don't speak to Englishmen!" As an Irish/Gaelic speaker, I can confirm that this is exactly what is said - "Ní labhraimis le Sasannaigh!" does translate as just that. I was always quite pleased that the film makers, rather than just throwing in any sort of gobbledegook, took the time to not only find out what the correct line was, but actually get actors/extras who could pronounce the line correctly. It's a small point, I know, but it's why I have always had a soft spot for Gorgo.

YAY!!! YAHOO!!! GORGO was the first giant monster movie I saw on the big screen! It was winter and me and my sister wanted to see 101 DALMATIANS, but the theater was sold out for the evening's showings, so rather than driving home disappointed, my father took us to another movie theater that was showing the film on a double bill with VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA !! a fantastic night for me and sis !!!
(It took another year before GODZILLA arrived on tv in my area!! )

I saw this as a kid and I loved it. It wasn't as silly and unbelievable as Godzilla. As for the 2 guys being jerks, I think that's the point. It's a morality tale: this is what happens when you let greed dictate your actions.

For me, the high point of Gorgo was the revelation that the two sailors had captured a baby and that the mother was much bigger. Unfortunately, that couldn't have been more than half way through the movie. The stock footage of military operations is kind of tedious, as I recall.

  • @Werezilla

Gorgo is what you get when you take the human villain of the original Mothra and make him the protagonist. It's not a pretty sight.
As for my choice of city to get trampled under foot by a giant monster, as morbid as it is, I say should go to Amsterdam. The juxtaposition of people running from fear from the monster and people not noticing because their high is too great an opportunity to pass up.

This is my wife's favorite monster movie. Personally gorgo and the giant Behemoth are no comparison in terms of moving realistically compared to the beast from 20,000 fathoms which is a ray harryhausen creation. As for Australia ,well I was thinking they could have made a movie about a giant prehistoric kangaroo that came to life and pounced on Sydney and Melbourne. But then maybe Olivia Newton-John wouldn't have been born and then there would be no Grease and then there would be no....well you get the idea. Lol

I want to see San Diego get trashed by a giant monster. We have a famous bridge and a famous clock tower, just like London & Japan. We've already been attacked by killer tomatoes and a T-rex. Now it's time for something much bigger to lay waste to America's finest city. As for "Gorgo", I'll agree that it's not as emotional as the original Godzilla, despite how much it tries. But as a man-in-a-suit monster movie goes, it's very well done.

  • @markasimmons

Spot on analysis, Robin. I once heard a Film Studies lecturer state that Gorgo was a parable about capitalism in post war Britain. Sigh. Really, it's just poor writing and plotting due to the producers messing with the ending. It would have been much more satisfying if the Government had just taken baby Gorgo back to the sea, and thrown the jerks to Mrs Gorgo .

  • @patrickdrazen8411
    @patrickdrazen8411 2 года назад +2

Note that "Gorgo" was produced by brothers Frank and Maurice King, veterans of Hollywood's "Poverty Row". (You get a rather unflattering picture of them in "Trumbo"; when blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo approached them to make "The Brave One", which elevated the Kings and began Trumbo's climb out from under the blacklist.) "Gorgo" is 1961, years before kaiju monsters became child-friendly; nowadays it's a requirement.

And the best part is when everyone finds out that Gorgo is only a baby. The rampage Gorgo's Mom goes on when she gets to London is cool. I love this movie. There, I said it!

I don't think Godzilla was ever really evil.
One fine day a nice man named Gorilla Whale woke up -- because someone blew up his house.
He then swam to try to find a new home, and banged his head on a floating hard object with a bunch of screaming little human things. But hey, they had lots of fish. Yum yum.
He then arrives to some farm land. Lots of little human things. They didn't taste good. But the four legged cow things tasted awesome. Unfortunately, there was no place to sleep, because the land was filled with square patches of water and rice.
He walked north to find a cave, and saw two paths. It was dark. One path looked empty, the other path looked like it had more human things and giant weird rock houses. He tried to walk to the empty path, but then was electrocuted by some evil invisible spider webs. So, reluctantly, he walked through the human houses.
Lots of humans attacked him, so he blew fire on them.
Finally, he arrived in a giant bay, where there was a huge cave.
    He went to sleep.
Then an evil human thing released something in the water that murdered the nice Gorilla Whale.
    :( Godzilla, a tragedy :(
At the end of the day, we were the monsters all along.

Thanks for another hilarious video. Although I personally like Gorgo (mostly for the impressive visual effects of that time), it does have its flaws and Robin is great at highlighting them. My friends and I use to love poking fun at this film ourselves, especially the radio reporter who always seems to be right at the scene (even with debris falling all around him) and never gets hurt. Even at the end, he gives us a great lecture on the "smallness of man" compared to the might of Gorgo.
As for a city I would like to see get destroyed in a monster movie, that would be Miami, Florida. I have nothing against the city itself, it just seems like the perfect target for a monster rising out of the sea with all the big hotels and beaches. I don't think Miami has ever been attacked by any giant creature in movies that I can remember, so there is a first time for anything.

I'm from Florida, and, had many a great evening of partying along Miami beach's sidewalk bars and restaurants. Now that I think about it, I can't think of any giant monster film where Miami gets attacked. Or even small monsters, for that matter.

This is actually my favorite monster movie, because the plot consists of a mother coming to rescue her child. I don't care that the humans are stupid (wanting to make money instead of caring who might die). That's how so many humans are in real life and other fantasy films (see Jurassic Park) that I wasn't bothered by it. I also loved that the small boy knew what would happen and was ignored... proof adults should listen to children more. Finally, I loved the music written for the film... one of the loveliest themes for a monster I've ever heard. This film has just been released on 4K with many extras. My copy arrived yesterday. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen I've got here at home.

Let’s see in SPECTRE. Bond destroys an entire city block and nearly kills everyone in the Day of the Dead festival and that’s just the pretitles. Not much chance of the producers wanting to go back to making a “spy” film. Actually a busy poster might save you the expense of sitting through the film ... much like a Dark Corners review.

Incidentally, you may not be aware that a sequel (of sorts) was made a few years ago. An independently made short film called "Waiting For Gorgo". It was shown at the Festival of Fantastic Films a few years ago, and it was so well-received that it was shown again at the end of the festival. Fresno, California. We're kind of flat & uninteresting, so a giant monster of some sort would liven things up. Only problem is, we have no major buildings or landmarks to be destroyed, so the monster would have to make do with cars & freeways and the local agriculture. We're near to Yosemite National Park, perhaps the monster could emerge from Half Dome which turns out to be an ancient egg! Realistically, however, San Francisco is ripe for a giant monster attack, by land or by sea, with lots of tourist attractions to flatten.

As an Australian I should be personally offended by this, but as the Sydney Opera House didn't open until the early 1970s I have to admit that Gorgo demolishing a few lighthouses, and maybe having a go at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, might have been slim pickings. Still, it's a bit harsh......

You forgot to mention the scene of the 4-million volts loaded into the cables around baby Gorgo's pit, designed to kill mama Gorgo when she comes to rescue her progeny.
It's inspired by the final scene of "Quatermass Xperiment", aka ''The Creeping Unknown" (1955) with the incomparable Brian Donlevy as Pr. Quatermass the most dangerous mad scientist because of sanity.

The whole movie was pretty much recycled bits and pieces from other movies ; nothing original. They've destroyed New York at least three times , London twice , every city in Japan a whole bunch of times , San Francisco , Las Vegas , Chicago , LA twice that I know of , Rome and Seoul. In DESTROY ALL MONSTER they attacked New York ( make that four) , London , Moscow , Paris , Peking , Sydney ( finally got their turn ) and a trailer park in Arizona. Saint Louis would be great because you have the Gateway Arch to show how big the monster is.

Shouldn't it be: "No one tell HER where Madame Tussaud's is..." ? (04:06).... and "Stop it?? That's HIS destination...." (04:37). Hmmm. Gender issues? Still, good points on a silly movie I have loved all my life, but mainly I first saw it on the big screen when I was 10, and became obsessed with Big Ben. Not Gorgo, but Big Ben.

This may seem a very American point of view but a larger than life and angry animal running around that wants to kill you almost all the time is not that uncommon in Australia and probably means a godzilla attack is more like a walk to the grocery store means a kaiju film wouldn't make sense cause if it really happened no one would care and would just say bugger off and it would be either gunned down or kangarooed or boomeranged to death in a matter of minutes so yea thats why they got passed up for England

Again the host has made a couple of errors. For instance, this film, under the title KURU ISLAND, was supposed to take place in Tokyo, as a co-production with Japanese producers, and not in Australia. Does it matter? Does anyone care? If we are here strictly for laughs, I'd guess not, and I'm just a spoil sport. Only a couple more thoughts: I understood the point of the characters was to help illustrate the "unintended consequences" of rampant greed, a theme that the film wears pretty obviously on its sleeve. The effects are pretty stunning, and often impressively lighted. Not all of them, but certainly enough to deserve SOME positive comment. I presume the point of this series is to be clever. But seems to me it's at the expense of somebody else's sincere labors. There are so many other films out there where no one cared, no one even half-tried, and those are the ones that deserve the glib derision. But, when all is said and done, to each his own.

@@Gappasaurus Why? Please elaborate. Thanks ;-) As a side note, Joel was a friend of mine, tho I haven't seen him in years. He had to admit that they should never have featured/made cheap fun of some of the films they showed, which he felt were actually classics of their kind,. But they had to keep producing shows and had to use what they could find in PD. But, if you're going to make jokes at the expense of others, at least spend the time to get your facts straight or the joke may be on you. Some people (especially those in the same business actually care about this stuff---even some of the real borderline productions, especially if the work was made by friends or associates, while the average person probably doesn't give a flying f. My comment is meant only for those who are interested in film history as a student or just a real hardcore fan. It doesn't (obviously) mean anything to anyone else.
