I grew up in Brisbane and, like many of my friends, couldn't wait to leave. 'Boring Brisbane' was its usual nickname in those days. Some friends returned, many didn't. Though I admit it has improved somewhat since then, I still wouldn't visit it at all if I didn't have family there.
I did leave at 21 and have lived in diverse places, including London and Melbourne, and only once returned to live whilst I was at university. Other family members have also since moved away, including my parents upon retirement, with only one sibling's family now remaining there.
Of course, many people love Brissie and will not relate to my reasons for leaving but, for a start, I find it definitely too hot and humid for half the year. Despite now being a larger city, it still lacks sophistication and a wide range of cultural choices. The arts community does its best but offerings are limited and most international acts and shows do not go to Brisbane. Traffic is appalling, with endless roadworks as the Council never quite catches up with the increasing population.
Shopping is also limited mostly to chain stores, as it doesn't yet have the population to support a lot of private retailers. For most Brisbanites, the casual dress code is part of its appeal but I enjoy the chance to dress up at times. Most restaurants will still accept diners wearing only shorts and t-shirts.
After years away, I have finally returned to Queensland but NOT Brisbane! Being no longer interested in city life, I am now up the coast a bit, so can drive easily to see family. Summer months are still too hot but I find them more bearable nearer the beach with the sea breezes.

I loved Brisbane as I loved my homeland , I had my best time in my life when I was doing my degree at QUT. I was upset when I had to go back home and I feet my soul still hanging in there between its trees and mountains, I can not forget how friendly and polite the people were and how clean and civalised the city. I am from a very wealthy country and never thought of migrating to any place on the planet except to this amazing country just to live again in happiness.

Lived in Brissie for 10 years and absolutely loved it. I would add that it's a really attractive city at night, and the river running through it and all the parks and Abundant greenery are a highlight. It's the jump off place for South East Queensland, which is jam-packed full of awesomeness. Australia is so huge that it's awesome when you can have so much to see and do, that's so diverse, in a comparatively compact area. Very practical when you have limited time on a limited budget.

I'm probably going to sound like one of those rude people the lady mentioned but like overlooking Brisbane is what is keeping this city the great way it is now. Tourism helps for sure, but put a city out on the map and eventually growth will bring with it standard city problems, like the bloke was mentioning about. If the people want Brisbane to be at the level of Sydney and Melbourne, they must be ready for the downsides that come with it too.
Also public transport for the most part is pretty decent. People just need to take it.

I live in Brisbane but I think the best cities for a tourist to go to are Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. I’m not saying Melbourne and Sydney are bad but the last time I went to Melbourne it was really dirty and packed but at least you can go to the MCG, and Sydney is quite polluted. I went on a 100 km bike ride in Brisbane and I rarely went on a road that’s how good it is. And I wouldn’t really recommend Canberra unless you want to visit places like The Parliament House, Questacon, the war memorial or the mint, I wouldn’t really recommend it. Melbourne for me, is the best city in Australia. The weather, quality of life, the culture scene & even the people are very classy. Even the houses there seem to be more upscale. But the living cost is too damn expensive! Just to give everyone an idea, it’s even more expensive than the UK!!! But Australia overall is more expensive than the US & Canada.
Brisbane, is a 2nd choice for me. It has the right balance of city life & nature. But it’s very humid during the summer. You really sweat a lot even more than being in the desert!
Sydney, on the other hand, is really vibrant & exciting, but more of a tourist spot rather than a place to actually live in. Nowadays, Sydney is actually becoming another extension of China. I won’t be surprised if one day, China would claim it as another one of their territories. LOL..

How long ago were you in Brisbane? It's changed a fair bit in the last 10 years. Yes some shops still close a little early but it's much better than it was even just a few years ago.

@@user-do2qx5wt4c I mean look I'm from Melbourne but I've spent a reasonable amount of time in Brisbane throughout the years, and I always love it it there. If any city in Australia in notorious for its food scene, it's Melbourne. And sure Brisbane is nowhere near that level, but I never struggled to find decent places to eat when I'm visiting. That being said I'm not into really fine dining, I think that's something you're more likely to find in Sydney (although there are plenty of high-end restaurants in Melbourne too). That being said, it'll cost you an arm and a leg.
If it's a really big deal for you, you could move to somewhere with a better fine dining scene.
My only criticism of dining in Queensland is your unnatural obsession with The Coffee Club. Heads up Queenslander's! The Coffee Club is both expensive and rubbish in my opinion. Yet in so many Brisbane suburbs and even regional Queensland towns, it's the only option!
