- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
Woodturning - The BIGGEST Log I Have Ever Turned (I needed A Crane!!)
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a gigantic spalted beech log into a snowman with a yew carrot nose. This is the biggest log I have ever turned, so big I used a crane to mount it! I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

Oh how wonderful. Keep him by the workshop all year and dress him in different seasons. He is magnificent Jack :)
Spoiler ⚠ alert
Great ideal!
Put a big smile on my face, well done Jack!
Thanks D. Did it get you in the festive spirit?
holy crap! That is a beast. Turning at 170 tells quite a story. I can't believe the log stayed so well suspended between centers!
Same here 🤣 it was almost a tonne. I have a new lathe coming so had a back up if the bearings went. Surprised she held up.
Frosty the sculpture
was a jolly sort of dude,
with a body made of finest beech
and a nose made out of yew!
Frosty!!! He would make a grand greeter to visitors to your shop!!!
Haha! Not a bad plan 😊👍🏻
Question: How far do you actually plan out your projects? Do you go in with a general idea and wing it, or plan it out to the last detail?
Neither.. I always have a plan but never down to the last detail.
Well, it's definitely working for you, your stuff comes out looking great! Except, imo, the banksia. You didn't do a bad job, that stuff just gives me the creeps 🤣
I appreciate that you showed the whole process of how you even got that log in place
Glad you enjoyed it M. It was very heavy. 🤣
I live where there's no snow. This gives me a great idea to make one of my own. Very cool!
You should! Let me know if you do!
Just love that snowman!!
Thanks Rena. Are you a bee?
@@JackMackWoodturning yup. I’m sweet as honey. Lol
Last name starts with B.
Jack your friend is truly awesome, please take care of him, talk to him so he's not just got birds as company.⛄⛄🐧🐧 😘😘
This Frosty never melts. Now that's some forward thinking!
Cool build/edit!
I really was wondering where you were going with that, it was only when you started with the details that it all came together! Great work, thanks for the smiles!
Hello again Jack. Wow wow wow I’m in awe. From the back yard with the chain saw to the crane then the tomahawk.once again wow wow wow. I love the way you polished the nose with the sawdust. He’s highly dignified. Best snowman ever. He’ll last a lifetime. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Blessings for you to . Great job 👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎
Never seen anything that big turned before. The lathe CO. should hire you for a add. But your skills made it. Thanks enjoyed.
Amazing snowman Jack,
Nice one Jack. How’s it going?
I hated working on the lathe in wood technology during high school…so I decided to never touch one again; but I will watch you work on it.
Very clever - at first I was sure you were creating a chess piece. Then you made the carrot! 😀👏🏻👏🏻
4:30 ... that's a feat in itself - nice, perfectly round log. Ikea sells those for $400 each lol. Nice work Jack, loved watching the curls fly. Thanks for sharing.
And I bet you have to put them together. IKEA stuff is factory made, I would have given 600 USD
@@davidmiller8030 I'm sorry, it seems you may have taken my comment as a critique, it was a compliment... My apologies if you misunderstood.
I love it all, but the orange finish for the nose is a genius touch.
That’s just orange wood 🤙🏻
Unbelievable!👍 I couldn't imagine what you were making until the black buttons then it hit me AWESOME DUDE!!!👍
From the shop at Happy Wood Turnings Ducklake Maine!
So cute glad you use lifts to help you
My initial thoughts were: that's going to be an enormous lidded bowl, and the finial is far too small. I'm so glad I was wrong! Super job.
I absolutely love this guy! He’s sooo cute ☺️
Me?
Of course! ☺️
That was awesome! Only slightly disappointed that you didn't make buttons for it.
I had considered it but I was short on time. 😊👍🏻
That was awesome! Thank you for making us all smile for Xmas. Great idea. So worth the bigger challenge!
Good job mister Jack well done
Thanks buddy.
Reminds when friend made his chess pieces out of birch and oak. When playing with 'em, you really didn't need to go gym in that week. Since oak queen weighed about 40-50kg, birch queen weighed 5 kg less
Wow, a full set?
@@JackMackWoodturning yeah hole damn set. only problem is stone slate chest board is bit crooked nowadays, thanks to ground frost damage.
Eine tolle Idee. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
🤗 thanks
Super cool! For Halloween you do epoxy eyes that light up in the dark👍🏻
That would be cool! Would you have him outside your house ?
OMG he's so cute!!! ❤️❤️
Very cheery, love it.
Nice one Ron. How’s your snowman making game?
The scarf was a nice touch. When you pushed the button to start your lathe, I was surprised that you didn't burn out the motor.
It probably would have if it was the original motor that came on this 💩 Axminster lathe. But that gave up after a year of bowl turning so I replaced it with a much more powerful and well built motor. 👍🏻
He needs a scarf… we can’t have him getting cold can we 😉😉
Sweet, good use of extra wood!
You win, it made me smile 😄😄😄
If you had not of smiled would it have been I win for you ?? 😉😉
Glad you enjoyed it buddy
Brilliant job as usual Jack, but i do have certain sympathy for your poor old lathe
Thanks buddy .. Why sympathy for the lathe??
@@JackMackWoodturning Making the poor thing turn half a tree, you said yourself you thought you had maxed it out when you made that four part vase, and yet here you are turning something even bigger.
On a slightly serious note i do have a trunk of a cherry tree about 600mm dia, and would love to turn something large with it but am worried about damaging my lathe, did you just chuck it on there and go for it or is there some sort of formula
You know when you need a hoist to put a bit of wood on a lathe you're going to have fun ... I can imagine the trepidation when starting the lathe for the first time ... excellent 👍
wow that's a big one !!!
It most certainly is Rog 🤣
Wow, now I have seen everything!
Hi Jack, wasn't till you painted the hat that i realised what was coming, perfect for the season! Cheers Will.😊☃☃☃
Nice one Will. You got a good Christmas planned?
Awesome!
Thanks Mark. I’m thinking even people in warm climates can have snow men now! 🤣
What a feat!! Awesome work, Jack!
❤❤❤
💛💛💛
That was great!
Why not? Nice work!
Thanks M. Worth a shot right?
Thanks for showing the ax work.
No problem 👍 Many festivities planned J?
That is just too cool ❤❤❤
A nice Festive surprise!!!
Your endless creativity is lways amazing.
Thank you for sharing.
No messing around with micro Christmas trees, macro snowmen are better!
Agreed! 🤣
Brilliant snowman ☃️ ⛄️ 🎅🎄🎁❤
Thanks Maddie. Feeling Christmasy?
Well it took me until the nose before I realised what you were doing!
Me too 🤣
quite a chuckle!
That must be the most ridiculously heavy Christmas decoration ever! When I still didn’t know what you were making and you started to make his nose I started thinking why is he making a spike?does he have a vampire to vanquish, lol.
I often wonder if you’ve got a pack of gerbils or bunnies or SOMETHING to use up all those wood shavings! This one was amazing, that’s a wonderful piece.
Muy ingenioso!!!!👏👏👏👏👏💖💖💖🤗🤗 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
NowTHAT is awesome!!! Happy Holidays my friend, Jack.. - Jack
Same to you Jack. Good Christmas planned?
@@JackMackWoodturning With my grandsons, couldn't be more fun!!!!
Unbelievable Jack! What a job! How strong is your lathe? Did the engine have damages? Thanks for sharing!
Looked away and came back to you working on the smaller log. That was quite confusing 😂
What do you mean?
@@JackMackWoodturning i thought you'd shaved down the big log to be the size of the carrot nose 😂
As you started painting I realized what it was. Nice!
As soon as I seen him turn the nose I knew it was a frosty !!
It’s lovely! 💕❤️💕
Very cute. 😄
Awesome
Thanks A. Where are you watching from?
I feel like all the sawdust and wood shavings from this project could be used to create a whole other project. Great job.
I just saw your snowman video, I love it
From the amazing mind of Jack Mack! Merry Christmas!
Muy bonito.
Hola, muchas gracias
Pretty awesome Jack!
That's really cute! The details especially made me smile- loved the carrot polishing. Going to make a turned ornament display? Could do the main parts of a Christmas tree, angel, candle (or angel holding a candle, maybe). Maybe even a 'stained glass' resin star inside a log section, like those cookies made with crushed hard candies? Just daydreaming...
Great idea!! Alas, my Christmas turning is all done now I’m afraid 🤣
A testament for Axminster lathes ............... enjoyed the video
I don’t think so.. the bearings and motor that this lathe came with couldn’t handle a log half this size. The body is a lathe sold by Axminster but I have modified it drastically. It took very little to kill the original motor around 1 year of full time bowl turning and the bearings were shot in less than 18 months from new. That is the reality of lathes sold by Axminster. Or any of their branded machines for that matter.
What did you do to upgrade the lathe? What size motor and is it direct drive or belt driven? Just curious, because that is truly amazing.
holy jamoley that;s a log! Glad you turned it into something fun; happy holidays!
Thanks! You too K!
❤
😊
So cute. I think it looks more like a penguin, though. lol
🐧😂
He's brilliant jack 👏 have a good Christmas
Thanks MM. All set for Xmas?
Fantástico, ficou lindo o boneco de neve.
My first thought was " holy shit" what on earth will it be?!. When you made the nose I knew. This came out freakin awesome. ♥️ From Boston
He’s adorable! Great work. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us. ❤
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed this one. I think he’s melted by now.
Very kind. Thanks for watching Beverly
Love it! Great Holiday turn.
Love it!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Very very cool. What a festive project.
Thanks so much M. Will you be making a snowman?
That’s an awesome piece of work there Jack! 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing and Merry Christmas!
I was just thinking, I should go watch a woodturning video, and Jack uploaded lmao
Great work! He reminds me of the Angry Carrot.
The what?
@@JackMackWoodturning Search on RUclips for the Angry Carrot and have a giggle.
Great job
That was my first thing I made on a lathe......but Never on that scale. Yours would squish mine like a bug! 😏🙂
Haha. Hope you enjoyed it! 😊💛
Happy Holidays to you buddy. Live Long and Prosper
Same to you! 😊👍🏻
Brilliant. I have often made small ones for the tree but that I had never thought of!
I don’t think I’ll do it again in a hurry 🤣
Very nice! 👍🏻⛄♥️
Beautiful work👌👌
Прикольный снеговик деревовик!
Woodman?
@@JackMackWoodturning No
Great job. I’ve turned loads of snowmen, but nothing to this scale. Not even sure o want to turn one that size. Fun to watch though. Thanks for sharing.
I assure you doug, you do not want to turn one this size. 😆
Very cool and very clever.
I’m not really sure what to say Jack! I thought I had done well turning a 200mm snowman. Mrs Rose thinks you are incredible. Have a great Christmas and thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Happy holidays S. Thanks for watching man 👍🏻
So Cute
Loved this one, I've wanted to make a snowman for ages, don't think I'd be brave enough to turn a snowman that large
I salute you sir! Just curious - any approximation of the before & after weight? The white Queen chess piece would look beautiful created on this scale. Happy Holidays & a Happy, healthy, joyous and prosperous New Year to you and your loved ones. Thank you for sharing your talent and creations with the world. Cheers!
Starting weight about 750,000 grams I reckon. Wasn’t quite a tonne. Probably closer to 300,000 grams to finish 😉👍🏻
OMG. He is absolutely stunning. You out did yourself. BRAVO 👏
Thank you so much M. Nice to see you as always 😊💛
It's really cool. I was wondering what it was going to be
That is awesome
Wasn't until I saw you paint the hat did I know what it was. Excellent job on a piece that big. Another amazing job.
Nice one Mark. How’s it going mate?
@@JackMackWoodturning Going good. I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas!!
