That's the reason why he had Takumi alternate between Impreza and 86 to deliver the tofu, so that he will understand that the 86 cannot run forever against the new gen car.
Still, both explosions are actually something poetically symbolic. The first explosion of the engine is when Takumi reaches his "absolute" limit (where the driver can go no further), because he simply can't do anything else, and his racing spirit just... ends. He sadly realizes that he can't do anything but give up and accept defeat, and the same goes for his car. Although the second one is different Yes, the engine blew too, but instead of giving up, this is the ultimate _"If I can win only just one more race ever... _*_IT'S THIS ONE. An engine over revving that much over the limit before blowing up, is almost impossible, especially at those revs. And don't forget that Takumi vs. Shinji was basically " The old Takumi, versus Takumi... _now_ ". The first was an absolute defeat. The second was a victory at all costs. Takumi's 86 really was Takumi's runner's aura. His body, transferred and transformed in a machine.

If you think about, this whole 12k ordeal is such a stupid thing to do. A thing remedied easily by changing gear ratios (which supposedly they did...). As for the engine going 12k that "long", it isn't that strange. It probably already broke something the moment it touched 12k and started lose performance. Going downhill probably helped a lot to keep it revved and made things much worse. Something big let go (probably caused by the hurt valvetrain).
The first loss was sad due to Takumi losing both the race and, what we thought was, his AE86 The second loss was sad due to the fact that he'd just blown up an incredibly rare Group A Touring Car engine
Second stage I am pretty sure it wasn't overrev, it was just because the engine was at it's limit after being used so long (kind just happens to old cars) but yh he was using it very extremely.

The engine in it is awesome when you look at the specs to it, it was one of toyota's group A motors. Its a naturally aspirated 1.6 liter that is cranking close to 240 horsepower it's a beast
The last engine blow had us all angry because that was a race motor, no "junkyard" replacement. The Bunta motor was a modified 4A-GEC which would have been easier to replace. I'm still salty.
I love the anime series but.... ...for the second engine blow up, Project D should have replaced the 86 engine without any cost for Takumi. I find it odd the Ryosuke didn't even bother to offer Bunta and Takumi to replace the blown out engine. I find it unfair and 'un-Ryosuke' like.
