Massachusetts wants to do the same thing, led of course by the state teachers union. Cannot wait to vote NO to lower standards. I was a high school math teacher for 7 years, including before, during, and after the pandemic and as a HS and college teacher at the same time. I was also a high school special ed teacher for 1 year. We CANNOT afford to lower these standards. The tests are not perfect, but we need to think about balancing the test, NOT eliminating the standards.

I am a teacher and it saddens me to see standards go down, expectations go down, and curriculum go backwards. What happened to challenging our children to be the best they can be…which, by the way, is individual for each child. In my school, they stripped my classroom of valuable resources and replaced it with The Science of Reading. I have a Masters in reading and literacy, and I have long thought Language Arts was the correct category for reading. Reading is an art to be taught, developed, and nurtured…not scientific facts to be dissected like a frog.

This is one reason, among others, that we homeschooled our children at least through the 8th grade.
I am a high school teacher for LAUSD and the reason that students can’t read is because they’re too busty playing on their cellphones. Note: I am the only teacher on campus who takes the cellphones away at the door.
I agree. I taught at a private school for a year. All classes were online but the kids sat in a classroom together. That was the first sign these kids would suffer.
Then I took phones away at the door and a kid complained to the Dean. The Dean told me I could not take personal property away from a student and demanded I return all phones immediately. That was the second sign.
Then we had a kid come to school who had a gun on him, which fell out of his jacket during class. Cops weren't called. He was sent home only to return two weeks later and given another chance. Strike 3 for me.
Bottom line, schools have to be better regulated and funded by our state leaders. We have to raise the standard of learning and quit leaning into online courses that "self teach" our kids. Teachers need to be able to educate the students, not computer lessons. It's way too easy to cheat with online courses and they learn nothing.
When I was very young, I read Garfield, Peanuts, Heathcliff, Calvin and Hobbes and more. My parents left me alone. Now I realize I practicing to read. Later on, I read animated Bible stories, animated math books, and more and more. I was reading. Then they forced me to read the boring school textbooks. But at least I knew how to read.

American schools are based on "fun". When I went to school in Germany it was "you are here to learn" and by golly I did well living/working in the US. I retired at age 68 and lead a comfortable life. In my life time education has gone downhill in the US. The only thing left is to give a high school diploma before you enter high school --- might as well since problem students get passing grades because the teachers don't want them back the next year. Certainly takes any stress off the student. Pathetic!
Depends on the school. In my school, we were there to learn, not to have fun (although we did, but that wasn't the primary focus).
What have these schools been teaching these kids if, after twelve years in school, they are graduating students without being proficient in math, reading and writing? You had twelve years to teach these kids the three most basic subjects!! Ridiculous!
So we can all agree that education is a worthy endeavour and we should give all Americans the same opportunity to get an education. There shouldn't be a paywall to education.
It's the cell phones. When I was a kid, we had spelling words on a list that we had to memorize each week. Now days, due to social media and parenting via LCD screen, the kids have developed their own "language" of abbreviations and expressions through emoji symbols. This has led to an inability to read as well as extreme ambiguity in communication. The ambiguity in communication has led to a secondary issue of nobody understanding what each other is talking about. This causes a lot of unnecessary arguments and just general ignorance. Stupidity is glorified. The issue began due to a Supreme Court ruling on June 25, 1962. But it became prominent due to the rise of technology and the destruction of the nuclear family, which led to the adoption of the LCD screen and social media as the primary means of parenting the youth.
I would say the destruction of the "nuclear family" happened because of hoarding of wealth. The ratio of money for the top 1% earn 6X more than the bottom 90%. During the age of the nuclear family, the ratio was far less and there was more to go around. Everything was cheaper by comparison too. The less there was to go around, the more friction it added in relationships. Just my thoughts
@@TomFoolery-eo4lr I agree. They made it so it was hard for most people to support a family with one income so there could be a parent stay at home with the kids. Even if both work, it’s still important that one be there when the kids get home and not be left alone or at a daycare. In my opinion.
Families that are willing to and capable of living within their means, without going far into debt, will be blessed with happier and more successful children. My second opinion.

In Minnesota students used to have to pass basic skills tests to graduate. There was a huge racial disparity though. When my daughter was in high school they changed it to if you failed either 3 or 4 times (I can't remember which), then that counts as a pass. I think now they have dropped it entirely. She had been really sick and when she finally went back to school they put a resource room on her schedule and told us how wonderful it would be for helping her catch up. Since she behaved, they just told her to go do her work off to the side. The teachers worked with the thugs. The teacher kept telling these kids that they had to study their math so they could pass the test and graduate. At this point my daughter was pretty tired of being tossed to the side and piped up that they only had to fail 4 times and they would graduate. We pulled her out of the resource room at the end of the semester, but she said those kids didn't do another moment of work the entire time she was there. She actually got some help though.

When I was in school in the 50s-60s, some teachers would give tests that the majority of students did poorly on and some, the brighter ones, did well on. They would curve the grades to make the lower grades higher. If the highest grades we're Bs, then a B became an A, a C became a B, a D became a C, an E became a D, and so forth. We then went to the, if you fail multiple times to pass to the next grade, they would pass the student anyway. What do you think?

We had to read a sentence out loud in books and so our pronunciation was correct and we were allowed to ask what does this word mean? Then in 5 th grade we were tested and each given a paragraph to read to ourselves and questions to answer from it. These were color codes so as you improved you moved to another color. And we didn't bully others but encouraged to help each other. I think it made readers out of all of us.
