      I have always had a crazy amount of house plants ( I dont think it's crazy everyone else does ) usually 50-100 or so (pretty sure I am over 100 right now ) less than 10 are in pots that drain , I hate having pots with holes . I use just about anything that catches my eye that I think will make a good plant pot , fish bowls , teapots , the ceramic pot in slow cookers , ceramic kitchen canisters etc . I put about 1inch of rocks or fish gravel in the bottom then dirt , I water my plants every 7-10 days depending on how hot it is in the summer or the house temp in the winter but I only give each plant a little water so there is very little if any in the bottom . I have never named a plant nor do I talk to them , though at times my sanity has been in question for other reasons . I also dont know the names of probably 90% of my plants . I am constantly taking cuttings , rooting them in water , making new plants in pots with no holes and 2-3 times a yr I post 20 or so each time on FB marketplace and tell people where i have found it grows the best in my house and I make sure to stress to them not to over water it . If they kill it within a month I will replace it , 9.9 out of 10 times it is due to over watering .

    I just named my variegated poinsetta Drama Queen. Brought her home and she was all big and beautiful for days. Within 24 hours from the last time I looked at her, the leaves started severely drooping and curling on themselves. It looked like we hadn't watered that plant in a month. Gave it a good watering and put in west facing window. Within an hour, big and beautiful again. I have never seen this dramatic of a response to needing water in such a short period of time. Hence, the name Drama Queen.

    Haha, I’m glad it’s actually normal to name them, after all! I’m glad I’ve learned about the acclimation period, I didn’t know about that! Thankfully, the plants I’ve bought have been pretty robust, but I’ll be more mindful about that. I’m a newer plant parent, like only a year or so, and most of the new additions have come within this year, so these videos have been super helpful!

    I have a very dumb noob question. I love my decorative pots. It wasn't until I started following some Instagram and RUclips plant people that I realized most people put their plant in a cheaper plastic pot and then put that inside the decorative pot. D'oh! Where is the best place to find a wide variety of sizes of these plastic pots?
    Also, I love your plant names. :) I'm a bit concerned about naming plants... if I name and kill it, will that make me feel worse? I have a Fiddle Leaf Fig that is down to 3 leaves with one about to fall off and I'm not sure I can save this little jerk.

    Super lucky here. I had a big move and had like 45 plants. Got rid of like half of them (the ones I loved the least) and kept my favorite babies. I moved only 20 mins away so the move wasn't crazy, i immediately set up my new plant stand and most fit! It's been about two weeks and the point of concern was that i had like 10 of these plants in a greenhouse that i no longer have space for (moved from house to an apartment). The humidity was usually like 70+ but now they have to acclimate to Michigan weather. It's been super rainy and hot and humid. Perfect for these plants. I think the only thing i noticed was my P. Gloriosum's leaf that was almost at the point of opening had some signs of stress on the leaf. Nothing major and it will be barely noticeable once it hardens off

    Hey there! I thought I was the only one who named plants!! 😁 I have 4 Epiphyllum starts. One is a long, very slender clade, so she is Olive Oyl. A 5th was Big Mama b/c she was a wide clade. IDK what happened, but one day I checked on them (same pot) & Big Mama was all tan & crispy & dead! Olive is still doing fine though. Then there's a Ming Dynasty start I call Ming & an unnamed one (just the flower color- maroon) I call Mary Loon, a play on Hello, Mary Lou, a Ricky Nelson hit! Last is a tiny piece of a Hurricane that is struggling. It was fine until a rat ate it's pup, uprooted it & ate the roots!! Poor thing! I'm trying to re-root it in water, but it's now winter, so it's gonna be very slow. I'm praying it works. His name is Super Caine! OBTW, I got that rat 2 nights later!! It also ate half of my 3 Fishbone's! One lost it's pup & there's a 1/2" nubbin of another & the 3rd is gone completely! Caine was in the same pot. It/they ate 2 ft of my beautiful Devil's Ivy, too! I thought maybe it was just bitten or knocked off, so I checked around the case it was on, but there was nothing on the floor! 2 FEET!! With leaves!! GONE!! 😡🤬 I heard another one last night, but it's cold, there will be more. I never had them eat my plants before! There are plenty of plants in the woods for them!! I live surrounded by woods. I guess I'm lucky it's only rats! There have been possums & a snake in the past! Thanks for your videos. Your voice is so calming! Perfect for an uptight helicopter Mom of plants!! I enjoy watching the videos so much! Especially the Monstera ones b/c I have a pot of I believe 5 very young ones. The rat ate 5 of those leaves, but it is still doing great. I'm impatient for the 1st fenestration though!! I'm not having much luck w/ my Philodendron Brasil & Hoya Black Dragon, though. Both were in 2" pots & looking great. Then they got eaten & don't seem to want to grow back! Probably b/c of the cold. Anyway, thanks again & I'll keep watching!

      @@KillThisPlant yeah, they're no fun, but when I was little, growing up in the 50's & 60's it was still country here! I used to play w/ green snakes, box turtles, June Bugs, & catch lightning bugs! It wasn't uncommon to look outside & see a horse or cow meandering up the road (DIRT road) or browsing in the yard! You kinda get "used to" sharing life with the wildlife! "Used to" doesn't equal "liking it" though! I just don't scream & jump up on a table if I see one of the rats! These are big ones, the body of the plant eater was 7.5", tail 9"!! Monsters!!! Usually I only hear them until I catch one though. Once about 13 y/ago, I had to take a young possum away from my Little Toy Fox Terrier. He'd "tree'd" it under a metal shelving unit! It was nearly as big as he was! I threw it out in the yard & by the time I'd cleaned Sammi off & made sure he wasn't injured, & finished getting myself dressed for work, it was gone, so it was only "playing possum" for real! We've had skunk nesting her babies under my parents house, a giant hive of bees, w/ honey, in Mama's bedroom wall, Chimney Sweep babies falling into the fireplace, Mama even found a Mama possum w/ babies in her silverware drawer! Plumbing left a hole & she climbed up. Oh, & a snapping turtle came w/in inches of our dogs nose probably 25 y/ago. Now, we have a Whitetail doe & her baby that grazes in the yard, & an occasional bear sighting. Since about 5 y/ago, we have armadillos! I was living in AZ when they arrived, & I've been home almost 2 yrs but I've not seen one yet. Pretty much, you name it, we got it!! OBTW, I finally decided on a name for my pot of young Monstera. I'm gonna treat it as one rather than name all 5! He'll be
      Sully, from Monster's Inc.! I liked Sully! He was so sweet!

I have less than 10 house plants so have entire rooms available to keep them separate. Removed all the soil, scrubbed leaves and started spraying and treatments. Love this!! Thank you. I have several lucky bamboos. This is dumb but if I throw them out will I have bad luck? Are they really bad plants? I am an amateur but I would like a tutorial on how to grow herbs for cooking in my NYC apt. I have scorching sun after 6 PM. What do do

      I cannot tell you what is good luck and what is bad luck.
      I unfortunately do not do any indoor gardening but there are lots of great, 'straight to the point' channels on RUclips doing that content.

      After I messaged you I checked my plant aloe closer . I think I have a pest issue, I bought 3 mosteras at Marianos for 15.00 which is cheap. I cleaned the leaves but I noticed a white coating a little webbing! I'm devastated! I'm going to buy a insecticide. I took them outside the house in a shady area . I'm afraid for all my plants . I have a large monstera I have to keep checking that it isn't infected . Thank you! 😊 for your help

    I just recently bought a 10inch monstera and it came in a soil mix that has bark and styrofoam, it looks similar to the soil mix u got for your new snake plant… except the styrofoam balls are smaller than the white in your snake plant… I’m wondering if the plant can live in that or should I repot it since it’s so big I don’t want too but if I have too should I?

    • @KillThisPlant
      @KillThisPlant  3 года назад

      That Styrofoam is probably Perlite. Perlite helps with drainage. If your soil has bark and Perlite its likely high quality. Go check out my video on "perfect soil for monstera and philodendron"

    I'm a master professional at not asking employees or at least I am now. Last time I did I was in a PetSmart. I'd gone in looking for an Oscar, when I seen that several of the baby Oscars was sectioned off so they were in like three groups. I thought why do this? there's no good reason, but I asked anyway. The employee went to find out why. When they got back I was told that the ones that were sectioned off was more expensive because they had guaranteed their sex. The big ones were about an inch at most. They had sexed them? Yeah sure they did.
    Employees are just that people paid to do a job. If somehow you determine that you got lucky and found an employee that cares about the job, fine ask that employee questions but chances are you just got a worker that can't wait to go home.
