- If you’re the type of person who can’t get enough attention, the Polaris Slingshot is an ideal vehicle. The reverse trike arrangement looks like a race car from the front, and because it has fewer than four wheels, most states in the U.S. now consider it to be an autocycle, a term that puts it between a car and a motorcycle. Whatever your state calls it, we call it exceedingly fun to drive.

I have a 2021 R model and love it. I lost alot of use in my legs and had to sell my motorcycle wich I loved. I bought the Slingshot and there was a learning curve but after time the slingshot and I became one. I have the auto drive and love it. What I like most about it is it gave me back the freedom of the road and the excitement of riding again. 2nd I love the wow factor I have no regrets.
hats off to motorcycle.com for what is the most genuine and accurate video description ever, haha. if youre the type of person who cant get enough attention, buy one of these things lollllll
im have been riding harleys and indians for 50 yrs.i now have a 2017slr. bought new. 23000 miles 22 states. i love it. i will buy a new one in 2019. ride safe everyone
I still love my 2017SLR. It's a blast to travel in. First trip 2000 miles
You know, I first saw these and thought “why?” This Review was great in that it got me to think a little more broadly. The whole point of a recreational, hobby, enthusiast vehicle is to put a grin on your face. Motorcycle or not, a lightweight motor vehicle that carves corners and you can rip through the gears like that? Safe bet it’d put a smile on my face, whether it makes any rational sense or not.
Happy to see places that are offering them for rent now. I think I will need to spend a day or two with one now. There’s a place in Kona, HI that rents them, and the Big Island has some epic roads that are most fun in moderate-power, light vehicles... like the Slingshot. Gonna have to give that a try.
Good review. 👍 Thanks for helping me think more broadly about “fun” in a motor vehicle, without getting caught up in labels or rationale.
it's it's own thing. and that's cool.
These are definitely a “love or hate” type of machine. It attracts attention and interest because it simply can’t be defined! Not really a car, nor a motorcycle, go cart .... the list goes on. The price is exceptional, given that the competition for similar toys are close to triple the price. I would love to try it out, try and master it’s strange handling and wave at all the people looking at you like your riding a horse with wings haha
The wine will go away with thime. I have 28,560 miles on mine now. This bike is asume. I thought I would not ever ride anything outher than a goldwing. I was wrong. Happy Slingshot riding.
I own one and am not one of the old farts that couldn’t afford a corvette and settled for this. It is nothing like a motorcycle and should honestly not be compared to one. It is it’s own thing!! No you will not break speed records in this but I can guarantee if you drive one and have the ability to beat the snot out of the 4 banger and roast the tire....it will be the most fun you have with your clothes on. I honestly love mine and have no plan on selling it.
MrFixIt Corvettes are overrated and lame. There are way better cars
Can you drive this without a motorcycle license?
I can't wait for the new Prius review.
These things seems to sell pretty well out here in NY - I see one at least once a week driving around. That's pretty good considering I have a hell of a lot of more of these than new Miatas out here.
Great little review. I absolutely want to own one of these things sooner or later. Can't think of a more fun toy and easily passable as a daily driver for around town tasks
isaac thrupp same here. Hoping in a year or so, I can find one with low miles and well taken care of. Maybe around $15K?
I currently own a motorcycle but I really want one these just for the fact that it is a stick shift and well cool as hell! I will have one in the future for sure! maybe a couple years yet =( but the wait will be well worth it.
I had the opportunity to test drive one of those.
"What a blast"
Driving it like a boss!😎👌
Duke you're not a bad car reviewer! Wish you would get a little more technical with the moto reviews as well. Liked your style on this one even though I'm not a huge fan of the Slingshot
Oh my 4K is the way.
Subaru 2.5L flat 4 can rev to 9,000 rpm with a few small upgrades.
The corvette small blocks are also known to hit 9,000 rpm when built properly, and they have pushrods...
While it has a great 2.4 Lt. engine with a six speed I believe, it also has a dry clutch like a car instead of a wet clutch like a motorcycle. The only problem is that its rear end looks like an unfinished fiberglass bathtub. I like the power it has but the look of the Campagna T-Rex with its smaller Hayabusa engine still takes the cake for looks, especially when you have the Aero 3s package installed.
The good thing though about the Polaris Slingshot, is that its Touring package starts at $30,000 instead of the Campagna's T-Rex which starts at $60,000 and then goes up to $70,000 with the Aero 3s package.
I think I can get over the bathtub look of the Slingshot for that price difference.
I don't think it's an MCY per-se, so I don't think the demerits are too fair, lol. For the price though it looks like a lot of fun, definitely if I had the extra funds would buy it for Saturday beach drives with the lady. Less cramped than 2-up on a bike for long trips, more fun than a normal car. Good mix.
Damn, you got me wanting to drive one of these things now!
Pretty neat. I only see old guys drive them, though. Takes a little away from the "cool factor."
LukeTheDuke93 I agree and I own one and am 25. Can’t find a single owner in the Phoenix valley that’s under 65
It is on my list because I had a fall several years ago that broke my tail bone. Degenerative osteoarthritis in the tail bone now. I can't sit on a motorcycle seat for more than 30 minutes without pain. Had to sell my 2009 Buell XB12Ss because of that. It is possible that I'd be okay on a fat seat cruiser/bagger.
[Airline seat to China for 14 hours really sux.]
LukeTheDuke93 Wtf...old guys can't be cool .you are because I Iam.
All-wheel drive would be awesome
wow, I like how you drifted that thing duke, haha...
Sorry to be "that guy", but that's not a motorcycle. It has a steering wheel and it doesn't lean. I don't think trikes are really motorcycles either.
J A agreed!
read the description if you have the time and ability
Oh no a free channel did something you don't like. Poor guy.
You will need a M endorsement in most states to drive it on the roads legally.
J A lol ...he said ...like a motorcycle ! Exept ..everything! A fuc**** waiste of money this ..huh...thing! Lol ...if at least they put a busa or zx14 motor on it ...no they put a cavalier gm motor ...sound like ....a cavalier ..a gm motor ..like shit...!
A blast to drive.... :)
I rented a SLR for 1 week .. I was so sure I was going to buy one Until I rented one..... the rear wheel sends the feed back of the center of road right up into your spine.. also from a safety point of view ... I hated being at a stop light and being the (2nd ) car.... if your the first everyone should be able to see you .. but when your car #2 , the car in the opposite direction that wants to make a left turn, as you are going straight through the intersection doesnt SEE YOU... they don't think you are there and because of that they think they can go left after the truck in front of you passes .... this happened a few times over the rental week ... also .. I noticed the rental company had in the back slot of broken slightshot front end plastic pieces... the owner said because it's so low and wide, its almost impossible to escape road debris, and since its plastic... well .... my girlfriend said it reminded her of a street legal dune buggy.. its after having one for a wheel I realized it wasn't worth $30,000.00 since it has a steering wheel and pedals and seat belts.. you might as well get a mazda mx5 for LESS money that comes standard with a softtop roof and A/C . Among other things.. there really isn't anything to the slingshot when you look under it ...
3 wheel is the last frontier. I'm still waiting for someone to come out with a "manta" shaped motorcycle two-wheel front, one rear, and really flat!
From the front it looks cool but from behind it looks horrible
For the price I prefer a mazda mx5!
seriously..my 2003 2.5l z4 with 50k miles was only 10k dollars
Christopher Hutchins theres a reason for that bro, sait till u have to fix or replace something on thosw things. Should of gotten a miata
ARCHI _Rider not a new but a very very nice ones for sure
You can't compare a 14 year old car. How much is a new Z4?
you can say that about any older car ha.. z4's come with 2.5 or 3.0 liter engines as compared to a miata's 1.6 or 1.8. youre always gonna have to pay for more horses
Potential owners should look at the list of major safety recalls on this vehicle.
Is it possible to add a form of storage kinda like a trunk? I'd be worried about my purse flying out while I drive one of those lol
I have ridden this “ Motorcycle “ I wanted in the worse way to say something negative….. I couldn’t! I am a 55 year old, Old school biker…. F##k this 3 wheeled P.O.S……. I LOVED IT! If in fact someone would have told me at that moment clean trade for your Harley… I would have shaken his hand and said DEAL. This is a great machine to ride . So much fun easy to control and pull the E brake while swinging the rear…. Good lord! Awesome machine, I would not change a thing. Again I am a American Veteran, old, grey, tattooed Harley lover by birth… I love this machine.
Why wound you buy a base model slingshot for 28k when you can get a kasawaki h2 ??
Why i discovered that vehicle. I'm stuck with a problem now and the only solution is having around 36 000$ CAD and i don't have 1% of it yet. XD
What is the tire life on this vehicle?
I'll buy it
Definitely not a true motorcycle, despite it's classification. My dad owns one though and I've driven it before, definitely a good time nonetheless.
He used to ride but has had a bunch of surgeries to a point where he can no longer ride, but he still wants to get as close as he can, so I'm all for his enjoyment of it.
what does he mean "3 demerits - no lane splitting" ?
You should put a wider back tire on that
checked some on line dealerships and Yikes! from $20k to $31k is this realistic or what?
I don't care if its not a motorcycle I'm getting me one.
I wouldn't say polaris is a small company, last I checked Indian was owned by polaris. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Steve Riley I was thinking the same. Until I remembered Yamaha has its music side and does done car stuff, Honda has its cars, Suzuki has cars, and Kawasaki does airplane stuff among other things. Compared to most brands they're a small one ha.
Sam Buffington true
Steve Riley Not the only brand under Polaris either.
Polaris, in addition to its off-road vehicles like snowmobiles, RZR, Ranger, ACE and Sportsman, also owns Timbersled, TransAmerican Auto Parts, Kolpin, Pro-Armor, Indian Motorcycles, GEM electric cars, Taylor-Dunn, Aixam-Mega cars and Goupil Utility Vehicles in France and Multix cars in India.
Polaris also make weapons for USA
That is not the Trans you re hearing, it is the belt. How can one complain about the open top and noise when driving a vehicle with no top. I just don't get it. Stupid comments considering this is the way it comes from the factory. If you need to be out of the weather and want quite buy a mini van
Wait. So it's a Motorcycle or a car? Now I'm really confused...
Ahhhh yes ur reviewing my baby but i have a icon color so mine is yellow that has no slingshot color no one will have
These things need A/C. Then I'd buy one.
Would rather have the Morgan... Or a morgan knock off.
How much are these
Would be awesome if it was front wheel 2wd...but I guess that's why it's name is sling shot because it will sling shot your rear end, making you face the on coming car or truck behind you .. not good at all potentially accelerating out of corners or with oil in the middle of the street where vehicle leaks oil while driving.
1:33 scotty kilmer is that u?
Why would i buy this piece of junk when i could buy a 4 wheel Mazda Mx5?
do u
They should just build it with 4 wheels and you'd have better traction and handling. Not a trike or a motorcycle it's a 3 wheel car! Other companies been making them for years. That would be a fun little sports car. But what's the price? Is it more than a Mazda Miata? Should you just buy a Porsche?
20k for base model.
The three wheel configuration allows it to be designated as a "motorcycle" for registration and insurance purposes. They are extremely cheap to own in that regard.
If it had four wheels it would be subject to much stricter regulations
In Canada I can insure this for like a quarter of the price of a similarly priced car. Because it's sold as a motorcycle trike. It doesn't need air bags, it doesn't need any safety structure. That's why we don't have the Atom or X-bow, they have no air bags and no safety features or structure built in, but they have 4 wheels. Polaris built this to stand apart from everyone else in the Canadian market.
wish they would hurry up and drop the turbo 260 hp turbo engine from the Sky Red Line and Solstice GXP in this...
As the gentleman pointed out, with only one rear tire that is a limit to how much power can get from rubber to road.
Reverse trikes is exactly what they are called, not motorcycles. And the Slingshot is slow. It is belt driven which the belt is robbing it of power. The 2.4l ecoshit GM motor is weighing it down with no power, and the rear tire is too narrow to gain any traction. If you want a real reverse trike, just get a Campagna T-Rex
Bargainteers look at the price of a t-Rex vs a slingshot. That’s comparable to a Miata vs a 911
A small company like Polaris ? Polaris is a multibillion dollar company.
Not a motorcycle, not even close.
Peter Lamoureux tell that to... well, quite a few states. Some still classify it as a motorcycle
*MOTORCYCLE .com! 😑*
I rather go with the motorcycle.
Wouldn't a mazda miata be a better buy.
Relatively small company like Polaris? Lol they've only been in business since 1952 and sold millions and millions and millions of snowmobiles and ATVs and utvs !
So you didn't drive the Vanderhall, but say this is better. I've driven both and you are as wrong as a chocolate covered oyster.
Couldn't agree more. Love the VH. Everything from the looks to it's ride
if its not a motorcycle, do you need a motorcycle license?
Depends on the state you live in
I popped a bag of popcorn and sat down to enjoy as soon as I saw you without a motorcycle helmet on this “motorcycle”... I can’t wait for the butthurt snowflakes who will tell you how you have to protect yourself.
Polaris is far from a small company!
Neat little machine but, ... would rather a Morgan 3Wheeler, and a Traditional MOTORCYCLE.
Morgans are definitely cooler, but they cost 2 to 3 times as much as a Slingshot.
- As the son of a "Displaced Brit" the Morgan pulls at my soul!
- Here in Ontario, Canada, you need a motorcycle licence with a 3 wheel endorsement, and helmets are mandatory. ... Though a Star Wars theme custom paint job and the HJC IS-5 X-Wing Fighter Pilot Helmet, could be FUN!!
PeteyBoy I’m in Ontario. Do you know how much they go for here? How hard will it be to get a motorcycle license??
Something original firm early review prescription hypothesis fashion emission survive.
For the price of that your better of with Ariel Atom S4
Hello! $64k to $120k not comparable.
what if they get T-Boned?......No doors..........i mean just a major design flaw, like i understand that if you're a good enough driver, you don't have to worry about that, but *YOU* don't have to worry about being a good driver, you have to worry about other people being a good driver..... :P
Transfer face battle look herb sequence scream existence invest stem.
Stay with automatic gearbox...
some has ball no hemit
Needs to add air-conditioning. Will wait till then
The narration in this video is largely pointless, as it is drowned out by engine and road noise.
Not a motorcycle. Period.
Please only let this guy do the reviews. The rest are the worst personalities for the job
Looks like something you'd buy for your "special" child. These things
are absolutely ridiculous. Know that you are being laughed at by almost
everyone you pass. Do they make clown themed gear?
jealous
These things are pointless...
These things are fun as hell....don't knock it until you try it
Ecotech motor is garbage, like most gm stuff. I'm surprised they can sell these at all. What a ridiculous vehicle.
