  • The lads answer all the big questions after another explosive round of Rugby World Cup action. The All Blacks made a statement with their monstrous win over Italy so are they really back? Should Ian Foster select the same team against Uruguay? Have Manu Samoa and Tonga lived up to the hype? And of course, the lads give their picks for who will win each match in the final round of pool play.

We Irish have always loved the NZ team. Admired from afar knowing this is how to play rugby. We finally have the structures in place to maximise our relatively small talent pool (Rugby is a distant 4th sport for Irish boys behind Soccer Gaelic Football and the greatest game..Hurling) so we can now play how we want to play. This won't be a flash in the pan for Ireland. You'll see consistency here for many years. Scotland aside.. if we do manage to challenge NZ in the 1/4 and stay with them it will be amazing. To win against them again and in a World cup would be something very very special. We don't 'expect' to win but we know when on our game we have the potential to do so. Best to our Long White Cloud brethren. ;)

What do you mean you don't have the biggest talent pool? You have the whole world. Your coach and many of your players are foreigners. As long as your economy stays strong, you won't have a problem with finding talent from other countries. Don't feel alone, I think only Argentina and South Africa regularly field teams that only consist of locally born and raised players.
Rugby is not the number one sport in most rugby countries. The only exceptions might be the Pacific island nations but I am not sure.
Enjoy the quarterfinals. If it turns out that Ireland must play the All Blacks, it is going to be very interesting. Ireland has grown since they won the series in New Zealand, and who knows which All Blacks team is going to pitch up.
The All Blacks have become rugby's new French with their inconsistent performances. They looked like champions against Italy but looked clueless, flat-footed and uncertain against France. They looked fantastic against the Springboks at Mt Smart, but they looked like headless chickens at Twickenham against the very same Springboks. They destroyed Argenitina in Argentina, but they also gave up a 19-point lead against England in the last ten or so minutes.
The only thing that they do have over the Irish is the fact that Joe Schmidt knows the Irish team and system better than any other coach at the World Cup. They have changed most of their coaching team since that test series and with Whitelock, Retallic and Barret all fit they might just be able to beat the Irish. They lose one of those three and their chances diminish fast. I still think the Irish is the better team but the All Blacks definitely has the potential to play a unstoppable game.
The question is do they have the ability to do it for three consecutive weeks. Personally I don't think so but time will tell.

      @conqo 10 месяцев назад +3

@@wlk2408 The big gent of a Kiwi two cents did a video recently and NZ actually has more foreign players, is this to do with the economy?
I hear you about Joe Schmidt, but honestly I think that works in both ways, as the Irish players are well familiar with his style.
I do think they'll smash Ireland in the QF, they're a different beast in the finals as are Ireland a lesser especially with the pressure. The ABs have a point to prove!

    • @wlk2408
      @wlk2408 10 месяцев назад +2

@conqo I think they have two advantages when it comes to foreign players. Most of their foreign players are from the Pacific Islands around them (Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and the rest). These islands don't have big economies, so many will find work in New Zealand or Australia. Then, there is the issue of being able to play international rugby for a tier one nation and win big competitions.
It is going to be interesting to see the effect Super Rugby is going to have on those smaller nations. Will a player still go to New Zealand if he can play for a local team and still get exposure so big French, Japanese, or other European clubs can possibly pick them up with much bigger contracts.
Australian rugby is in big trouble. They already said that New Zealand will have to share some of that money they got from their massive sponsorship deal. New Zealand will probably also have to help those two island teams financially. Can they do it and for how long? Will they do it if those players then move on to European clubs or Japan and those nations get the benefit from something New Zealand is paying for.
Finally, will Super Rugby give those island teams enough young talent to develop that they become more competitive at the international level so those players will rather stay and play for their home nations?
It is all very interesting, but it is going to take big money and lots of creative thinking to keep Super Rugby competitive and growing. New Zealand rugbys golden age might have past. They are facing some massive obstacles. Razor is already talking about getting South Africa involved in tours to New Zealand to give their local teams some exposure to a different type of physical game because Super Rugby will not prepare the franchise level players for the slower physical type of game they will find playing the Springboks and many European nations.

Who has the highest ceiling? I am Irish and I would put all of NZ, France and SA ahead of us. The Irish team has been playing at a really high level, but I think Andy Farrell has really maximised the performance of this squad. How much more is there? My concern is there isn't another level for this squad. Both NZ and SA definitely have the raw materials to beat Ireland but the performance levels haven't been there yet. NZ are suddenly looking good and SA only need a kicker and some better decision making. France can be incredible but their performances can be more variable, you never know what you will get.
Ireland would need to add more power and speed to the squad before they could be fully confident.

Comparing the two games and fozzies comments, i think he was referring to the amount of time the ball is in play. Not necessarily the style. Yeah the ball in play time is getting ridiculous, as little as 30 minutes per game. Rugby purists might like this kind of game but it will do nothing to attract casual fans & grow the game globally. If a player is too injured to play on then replace him, if he is ok to continue then get up & get on with it.

They have a huge pack that rivals anyone, one of the best defensive coaches in the world in Shaun Edwards, they have unbelievable attacking talent like Penaud, the best player in the world in DuPont who has the capacity to turn any game, and when they are in that “jouer jouer” mood in front of a home support then it becomes a really potent mix.

There was a lot of attack in the SA Ireland game as well, but good defense or errors prevented the actual tries being scored. Still good to watch. Ok if Foster is saying that more tries should be scored to make the game more attractive, but it should be balanced. A game in which one team is totally dominated has no suspense, and isn't suspense that adds to the enjoyment? Rugby union is a game with set pieces, that's the game. Why do people want it to resemble 7s or league? Find a way to have fewer stoppages, but I am not sure a Boks vs ABs game with a score of 65-78 (yes I am letting the ABs win this one) will be better to watch than a 18-21 for example

The highest ceiling question is interesting but probably not relevant to the eventual winner. Even the most partisan South African supporter (me included) would admit that in 2007 and 2019 the All Blacks always had the highest ceiling, but they didn't perform to their ceiling, in one game that counted, each time. If South Africa play their very best game at the moment, I don't believe that any team can cope with that, it is honestly just too brutal, and that was most realized in the pre-world cup 35-7 vs New Zealand, I fully believe on that day Ireland would have also lost 35-7 or close to it. The thing is, I think Ireland play most consistently close to their potential. I.e. Ireland are consistently at 95% of the max potential for any team, the boks played at 100% against New Zealand, but are more consistently around 85-90%.

With respect fellas I think there is a better angle of the analogy. Each team is in an office block. A team like Australia for example, not playing well and only just put together, is on floor 8 of their block. They have 11 floors. Playing at their best when everything is working they could get to 11. Let's say Ireland are consistently top performing. They are on level 12. Maybe SA are playing at level 11 currently.
The question is, how tall are the buildings? A team playing a limited game plan of 12 storeys, playing it well at level 11, might be 70m high. But a team playing a varied game plan that can adapt under pressure who can score in different ways and are setup to be minimally hurt from card disadvantages have more height in every storey. Playing at level 10 only in a building of 12 storeys, they could still be 75m high, higher than another team playing a gameplan better that might not have enough strings to get out of a jam

In Gaelic games we have a black card along with yellow and red.
I think we should replace the red card with a black card.
So existing reds mean the player has to be taken off but in 10 minutes someone can come on to replace that black.
Then keep the red for the extreme things like punches, major tip tackles etc.
It wouldn't change much rules in around the game, only changes the sanctions for the same instances.
I mean to treat a career ending tip tackle with an accidental head clash is ridiculous.

Discipline- is there ever a circumstance where it is good for your team to concede a penalty? We keep banging on about discipline when teams concede multiple penalties, but is that just an inevitable consequence of the other team having momentum? And if the penalties were not conceded, breaking that momentum, the opposition would instead be scoring more tries? Can teams be strategic about conceding penalties, in the same way as they might decide to kick to the corner rather than take 3? Or is conceding penalties just unambiguously bad?

Ireland have best cohesion and clarity in what they're trying to do, and NZ still have that xfactor in their players to win against any team.

What NZ needs to do against Uruguay is not to repeat what they did against Italy; rather, they need to do what they've done in pool games in past WCs, when they've played "lesser" teams and maybe not looked great on the stats sheet, but it's because they were working on specific things. They treated games against teams like Uruguay not as opportunities to run up the score, but more as really intense practice sessions against motivated opposition. Look at their games against Namibia and Georgia in 2015 for examples.
I don't see how winning your previous two games by a total of two hundred points can in any way prepare you for a challenge like Ireland. Might as well play touch rugby.

The world cup is only ever three games - quarters, semis and finals. For a top flight team the pool games are training runs. This game against Italy was a training runs and nothing more can be read into it. In every world cup there are only ever really four teams who can win. I think the AB's are very much the fourth of this iterations four teams mostly because of inept coaching, though the fortunes of France may well be badly injury affected, putting the AB's third. The completely moronic draw pits the AB's against Ireland in the quarter finals. It's hard to see the AB's beating Ireland, though on a good day they can do it. The problem for the AB's is that Ireland - like the AB's in the decade before Fosters tenure - can win on a bad day. I think if that game was played ten times that Ireland would win 8 or 9 of them. The AB's have to target Sexton and the Irish lineout. The comments about the world cup being decided on discipline are salient. The southern hemisphere are at a disadvantage regarding this as the refereeing is different in the northern hemisphere and that might be enough to decide a game against the AB's. It's not a coincidence that there were no cards in the Ireland South Africa game with most of those players used to the northern hemisphere refereeing.

Nobody is quite sure what the ceiling of NZ is, but if it clicks then it may be unbeatable.
England is a mystery as they have been poor for years, and haven’t had a challenge in the tournament yet due to the lack of competitiveness in Pool D.
Wales are building every game and will be tough for anyone to beat. They’re such a new team that their ceiling is a total mystery at the moment, but it could be quite high.

Being able to put a cricket score on a poor Italy is not the same as facing an one of the top 3 and the pressure they put in the breakdown.

The All Black History since 1987 has been Colourful. Every time when they had been Favourite, they had been "Pipped at the Post"
When they were not favourites they won.
The French Loss 2023 seemed (To Me) Suspicious as the AB's seemed Sluggish which is NOT normal.
It was like they were Determined Not to be Favourites.
Maybe this was so they could Peak at the Finals.
Ireland. Watch Out. We are Coming for You.

if the italians weren't keeping their powder dry for france then somethings badly amiss with them - so many half hearted tackles and lack of fight in defence with ABs it wasnt funny

All Blacks are limited by their pack. On their best day they can maybe match Ireland, France and South Africa but on those teams’ best days they will outclass the current ABs pack. Sorry lads. Harsh truth.

Our pack giving away dumb penalties is one element that has gradually felt like it has gotten worse. The lines Ireland forwards used against us when they won the series was superior to what our defense could handle at times and better than the lines we used. That is clearly on the coaching team though.

NZ must win against a team that has altered them most in the recent past. Ireland will try to go through the middle and expose NZ's passive defence. Soft shoulders in Dunedin '22 (Ofa' and Bower for the 1st try) and multiple cards (Red and 2xyellow) is what changed the momentum that day. If the result were different that day....

Nobody knows where the AB's ceiling is. It has always been high. They will live up to the occasion. This is from a Springbok supporter.

I predict the AB's to be in the final. Hopefully against the Bokke. That will be a classic. In France of all places.

I would like to know the tonga play that clashed with Mapimpi that cause the same injury then Johan Deysel from Namibia did with Depont want is going to happen to him. On the pitch the ref gave just a penalty after the tmo said yellow card so ref over ruled tmo. However the rugby incident that occurred with Eben and the player the jumped into him, the ref on pitch was itching to give Eben a yellow bunker revue but Tmo luckily said no it is a incident not on purpose. So Deysel got max penalty which game down to 6 weeks. Scott Barrett's red card in the warm up game got overturned where is the consistency and why does some rules only apply to some team and some players but then there is another set of rules for other teams and players. Dont know how closely you watched the Ireland vs SA game Bondi Aki was supposed to get a red card in what he did in the mall but nothing happen. Ben the ref is not world cup worthy ref really

We shouldn’t blindly just start adding more teams to the Rugby Championship and should only add teams based on merit so the competition level can remain high and so we don’t end up with a situation like Italy in the Six Nations.
Argentina earned their spot through getting good enough results in the 2007 and 2011 RWCs and performing well against tier 1 nations where they showed they could actually beat other tier 1 sides often enough.
Japan and Fiji have shown the most potential and have had some success but need to show more as they haven’t reached the level of success Argentina had between 2007 to 2011.
