This is BY FAR THE BEST video I have seen on the subject and Ive watched 100s over the years. Not sure how I stumbled upon you but I can't thank you enough for this video. 2011 production and super relevant still, 2019. TIMELESS GREAT CONTENT!! Blessings to you all from the Great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood Washington (Think south of Seattle but BETTER! ;)
Hi Stacy, Thank you for the kind words. We must redo the demos one day now that there is access to HD video and the tech has improved Thanks again and glad there is still value in the older content. Best regards, David Schummy
Hello Folks The materials names are the following: 1)Logan Foam Werks, Foam Board V-GROOVER Cutter 2)Stanley cutter 3)RABBET CUTTER Foam board 4)CIRCLE CUTTER Foam board 5)STRAIGHT BEVEL CUTTER All this can be found on ebay! Hope that helps :)
Hi Smacker57, Foamboards are located in Brisbane and we have a full range of the tools on the foamboards website that we supply Australia-wide. There is a link to the website in the video description where it says David Schummy from foamboards xx you can see the full range in the online store located at that link. Thanks for the request. Kind regards, David
Hi Khalida, the floor plan was printed on an Epson 9880 inkjet printer and then mounted to the adhesive coated foam board. The 9880 prints up to 1120mm wide and I think when we did this one it was on 610mm wide synthetic paper. You could always print the design out on smaller A4 paper and tile it onto the base board. The adhesive backing is quite aggressive but when mounting smaller pieces quite easy to work with. Thanks for your positive feedback. Kind regards, David Schummy foam boards.com.au
Hi Adeq Juma, you can visit the foamboards/blog (see video description for the web address) for links to the various sources for the tools and products. I also list my favourite architectural modeling books. We sell the tools directly in Australia and there are links to other overseas sources listed on the blog.
Great videos. Good instruction and techniques. Sensible. I'd like to make a living just doing static models of buildings, vehicles and vessels. It would be a pleasure, more than a task.
Hi Trevor, You can start with a sharp utility knife and a good non-slip ruler, a hot glue gun or some double sided tape and it shouldn't cost you much to have a go.
A foam core board model is good for constructing and studying the basic shape of the structure. But, if you want to see the actual building materials including siding, roofing and details, I recommend building with the 3-D Home Kit, which can be found online. You can also combine the foam core board and material sheets from the kit.
Hi Daniel. Please elaborate further. Was there an error somewhere. We often make various models in the common scales of 1:20, 1:100, 1:200, 1:500, 1:750, 1:1000 depending on the project and what the model is to be used for. The larger scale model demonstrated would be more used as a teaching aid than as an architectural model but often 1:25 models are commissioned for showing specific details for clients like solar panels or specific functional areas of a design. Thanks for your feedback. FB
Hey, great products I've been experimenting with them liking what they can do. Just wanted to ask what architectural program you used to create your floorplan?
Hi Tobias, there are a few links on the foamboards blog to international suppliers of the foamwerks products. A lot of the Art stores that would sell other Logan products like the Logan mat cutters would probably be able to get them in for you even if they weren't a stock item. If you really get stuck shoot me an email on the foamboards Australia website and I'll see if we can help. Kind regards, David
Hi Helen, You can use many different paints and pens etc but just be careful of solvent based paints that can dissolve the polystyrene core. The other issue to be aware of is paint can cause the foamboard to buckle on occasion due to the tension created by the paint shrinking as it dries on the surface. This bowing can be minimised by painting both faces of the board.
Hey...let the guys at Logan know they should sponsor me. Full disclosure. I sell foam boards through my Aussie business. In the past I have been sponsored by Aristocrat Leisure Industries and even CCTV Chinese Television but all for my World Record Boomerang Throws never sponsored by Logan-Foamwerks even though I've promoted their tools for over 25 years in a variety of public demos and classes etc. So please go right ahead and start a petition to get them to sponsor me. Could do with the bucks
I'm not familiar with the metric system,(im from the us) but the scales we use are 1/4"=1'-0" 1/2"=1'-0" and so on. 1/2" scale more common for elevations, so would that be a common size for an architectural model? Sorry not an architecture student but am interested in making a model home for portfolio's to become one.
hey ! where can i find these cutter, foam board and other tools ? do you know any web site or something from where i can order them ? if u can help me please reply
Hi QANTAS 1978 you can use PVA glue it has to be held, pinned or clamped in position until it sets. Another option the RC model builders use is hot-melt glue. The glue sets quickly and is rigid and strong. If you are going to use hot glue get one of the better glue guns like the Bosch and use the larger glue sticks to apply the glue quicker.
Hi Rodolfo, You can use a variety of glues but the advantage of double sided is speed. Another quick glue to use is the hot-melt variety from a glue gun. The only glues to avoid are some of the solvent based types that can dissolve the foam.
These short series of video's are fantastic, i have enjoyed watching them .

Is this actually a job? How did you get into it in that case?
It looks as though I would have to spend several hundred dollars U.S. to get started in this hobby . Excellent Video .
