When I look at it Ruth looks a lot like a black Hovawart. A pretty large German guard dog breed.
They're bred to resemble old German guard dogs that were replaced over the years by more "modern" guard dog breeds like the German shepherd.
A shaggier flatcoated retriever i would say. They are 100% black too.

Hovawarts are taller, have a longer and thicker coat and have a much higher drive to guard. They're guard dogs after all and retrievers are hunting dogs. They're usually friendly with everyone and that's simply not how Ruth is. He's kind to those close to him but sceptical and aware of anyone who might be a threat.
They're being bred properly since 1922 but the breed itself existed for a far longer time. When you look at pictures of medieval drawings and stuff like that, you'll sometimes notice black dogs in these.
These are Hovawarts... In general they were just tall dogs with a high drive to guard.
It's said, that stealing a Hovawart could've got you into prison back then. They were known for their aggression towards possible threats and their gentleness towards their people. The original Hovawart is the ancestor of all modern guard dog breeds and because of the existence of those (they were simply easier to train, since the Hovawart is known to be very stubborn) people soon lost interest in those beautiful dogs. Thankfully some enthusiasts were working on saving the Hovawart.
@@CynderNeko flat and hovawart lool sinilar enough but i agree thst a hovawart fits the bill better. But i do require an explanation on modern guard breeds. You do realise just like with pokemon there are more dogs out there that we dp not know of right?

I love Ruth. He reminds me of my dog who died saving his sister's life. His name was Grover and he was a wonderful companion. He was black and fluffy while his sister is shorthaired and has white socks. She was about to get hit by a truck one day and he pushed her out of the way only to get hit instead. I still cry over him sometimes. He was a very good boy.

It’s got some aspects of several different mythological creatures but it’s basically just a concentration of negative energy.
It's called a negative entity in Witchcraft. Since this is an anime, this is exagarrated heavily. You don't hear them, but you'll feel them if you're experienced. But Negative entities usually just boost your negative emotions and feed on it.

Let's just say if a Negative entity was strong enough to do that...it would mean it's..very potent.

He looks like Sirius Black
Well he is the thing people mistook Sirius for in Harry Potter. A grim so their might have been some reference to Sirius with his appearance.

They're based on the same type of mythical creature: the Phantom Black Dog, which are often seen as omens of death. Sirius' animagus form was mistaken for one of these creatures, the (Church) Grimm. Sirius' nickname "Padfoot" is another name for probably the most famous phantom dog legends in England, Black Shuck. There's also the Gurt Dog, El Cadejo, The Black Dog of the Hanging Hills... Lots of ghostly good boys wandering about the world, guarding graveyards, rounding up lost spirits and scaring unlucky travelers to death. 🐾

I'm pretty sure he's based on an Irish wolfhound since the black dog is an Irish myth.
But why does Chise say "Black dog" instead of "Kuro inu"?
Kenneth Kellogg I think it has to do with the fact that "black dog" is a mythical creature, not just a dog that has black fur. Just like there's no English translation for the word "youkai", there's no Japanese word to specifically denote a "Black Dog".
Also, it would be kuroi inu くろい いぬ /黒い犬 not kuro

A black dog is a creature meant to protect the dead of a specific graveyard and guide them to the afterlife. It was believed that the first being to be buried in a new graveyard would become its guardian so manny villages burried a dog or other animal instead to save a loved one from the fate, subsequently creating the being. They are all good doggos and deserve manny treats and scritches

Could be a reference to the song Scarborough Fair where one of the lines refers to a shirt made without seams nor needlework. In regards to an actual answer probably not.
