It's so relaxing to watch your videos. I actually got my father out today and taught him how to cast on my rod. When he was a kid, he made some small wooden ladybugs, but never got to fish with them, so that's what we spend the day doing. We only caught one trout and one shiner, but it was still a great day!
I think this aspect of your videos is a real strength - really adds to the realism, but also helps everyone watching to continue fishing and learning with patience. Everyone on occasion falls, loses fish, gets stuck in the trees, etc. - it's important to accept these little bumps and move on calmly, which you model very well :)
My favorite type of fly fishing videos- small creek, fishing for natives and/ or at least wild trout, good commentary & fish handling. Keep em' coming.
The smaller 9’ rod by the same name as your 11’ you started out with is ideal for the small tight waters you fish. I call it the “Magic Wand” you will regret not getting it long ago! Get it. Will become your favorite go to rod, and fish waters to suit that rod instead of a rod to suit the waters. Cheers, enjoy your new magic wand. Kurenai HM30R 9’7”
Your channel has become one of my favorites.I lived in CO for years in the 90's and fly fished a lot of tiny creeks, totally reminds me of how you fish. Love it!
Those fish were some of the brightest , prettiest trout that I have seen you catch ! And it was awesome to see the fish in those clear waters ! And it is actually cool to see you catch some tree trout tooooo !! Stay safe and keep sending us your great vlogs .
What a beautiful little stream - almost looks like the handiwork of a very skilled landscape architect, with a commission to “ … design the perfect small trout stream.” Glad to see you got a Kurenai. Suntech makes some really excellent rods. Great video - greatly appreciated!
I purchased my first tenkara rod a month ago but haven’t had time to travel to the places I intended to use it in northern Arizona (I’m in Phoenix). I was at Bartlett lake today and the bass weren’t really biting but I made my way around to a cove that had a ton of structure and looked like a prime bluegill bed so I ran back to the car and got my rod. It felt so good to finally find out what a bite feels like on one of these rods. Caught 20+ little bluegill in an hour. Those hungry little guys will bite anything but still had fun. BTW my first rod is a Tenkara USA Iwana. Maybe a bit pricy for a starter but it seemed to suit all the ways I intend to use it.
Great video Tristan! Those Colorado Cutts are truly beautiful trout. The Elk Hair Caddis, in both the standard and CDC and Elk (which is tied with Deer Hair) are truly outstanding dry flies and very productive. It’s nice to see you fishing with some dry flies…Karl.
I've used it on several occasions but never bother to put floatant on or fish it any differently than I fish kebari. Still a great fly when sub-surface!
The Suntech HM33R is the first tenkara rod I bought and my go to. Granted I only have two, one for me and one for the wife. But I love that rod, it’s completely changed the game for me coming from western fly fishing. I’ve caught up to 20” browns and cutty’s on it. I’ve had to shorten the leader a bit for right quarters, but it works well. Definitely give it another try.
i really like watching your videos...ive never fished with a tenkara rod before... im more of a fly rod kind of guy...but this looks a littlle more simple..im gonna give it a try...any rod recommendations for a starter rod?.. thanks!
When you go out on a trip , do you do the filming for both of your channels on that one trip ? Love your vlogs and have a hard time waiting for another Saturday to come for new vlogs . 🙂
I used to kind of hate the idea of zoom rods before I got the Dragontail FoxFIRE and started using it more. It's so powerful being able to collapse it down to 6 feet when needed, then extend it all the way up to 9 feet if it's possible. Those were some beautiful cutthroat!
Very nice. A little more visual story-telling in this video. The montage of you crouched and inching along was new - really liked it. Also, when you missed a few fish, you let the GoPro linger with your disappointment. Keep up the cool shots.
it was a pretty large one , too ...laughing to myself just a little when it charged at his net and he still didn't see it...not poking fun- he was focused on the caught fish..
Another great video. One thing, you mentioned that the 2nd rod your using is the Tenkara USA Rhodo. Are you sure it's not the Sato? The Rhodo has green accents (the Rhodo happens to be my go to favorite rod). The Sato has the red accents. It doesn't really matter. I have both and they each are great rods. I'm a big Tenkara USA fan.
Great video Tristan. I was wondering if you were going to fish for CRCTs while in southern Utah. I know where your at but have only finished the high mountain head waters that contain CRCTs. The DWR has done a great job in restoring the native population. I’ve had a few days of over a dozen cut-throat in the net.
Losing a fly gives the fish, and the fisherman, time to bleed off adrenaline and reset so not all bad. I have the Sato (10'8", 11'10", 12'9"). It appears the Rhodo (8'10", 9'9", 10'6") would be the perfect compliment.
Bought my first tenkara rod a little while ago after following your channel and I'm in love with it! Got a question hoping you or others can weigh in on - I got the Dragontail Foxfire and love how it feels with tiny brookies yet can also handle quite large stocked rainbows/browns. Obviously though, accidentally hooking into a monster triploid is not what that rod is meant for and I lost the biggest fish of my life. What's your favorite rod that has a bit more backbone if needed, but isn't overkill for the average 13"-18" fish? Zoom rod preferably. Thank you for the awesome weekly videos!!
I truly enjoy your adventures. I have a question that has been a problem for me.... Why do the trout you catch never swallow the hook? I assume you're using a #12 or #14 size hook, yet they are always removed with no effort whatsoever. Share the secret.
You'll have to search for them on Google or Etsy. I don't sell them. Some people's Idaho Killer Bugs are actually Idaho Killer Kebaris. They just messed up the name. (Source: I'm the guy who first tied and named the Idaho Killer Kebari 😄)
Just got into tenkara and am doing really well... About 200 so far on my tenkara USA iwana. My only issue is that I once got snagged on a rock and didn't know what to do since I didn't have enough slack to grab the line and snap it (just waded in to get it but I won't always have that option) how should I go about that in the future?
You've got to pull the line to snap off the fly one way or another if there's no other way to free your line. Ideally you can reach the line and pull it. If not, you can orient your rod in line with the line (i.e., straight) and pull on the rod. You should eventually be able to grab the line. Either that or the rod tippet will break before you get to the line. I've never encountered an issue where either one of those didn't work.
I enjoy your videos. How do you avoid trespassing on private property, and possibly getting shot at? Are these all Federal and State public lands that you fish, or are most of the landowners just friendly? I asked because I saw an orange property line tape in a tree on this video.
Hey Tristan I have just stumbled across your channel . Love everything I've watched so far! We definitely have many similarities I also have a new ie rv channel and I am a HUGE trout fisherman. If you ever want to venture to Pennsylvania I'm in an area with some of the best fishing on the east coast! I also tenkara fish and we have endless areas to fish. Hit me up if you ever want to come this way!
Did you notice after hooking the first fish after tying on the caddis he had a follower that basically swam to your ankles? Typical bass behavior but I've never seen native trout blindly follow a buddy and not notice the person standing in the water

Your new camera is awesome! @11:00 while pulling in your fish a another one zoomed in to check out the action!
Happy to see you get caught in the trees too. I’m not alone.
Nope, definitely not!
lol thirded 😂

Ya so peaceful the sound of the water and quiet area that's priceless....
The feel you have without cork is magical.
I like your videos because you are the only geek fishing guy on the internet
Thanks, I'm glad you like them!
Beautiful trout.
Dream stream.
It's a beauty, for sure!
I can’t see the 4K but the clarity on the new camera makes these videos so fun.

Way to go Tristan! You've become so stealthy; hiding behind the pine boughs!
Gorgeous little creek!
The RHODO! My rod. If you ever want to fish in truly claustrophobic conditions, you need to head out East. Where I fish, it's a jungle.
I've seen pics, and you're not wrong!
Great job , nice creek .
Thanks!
This was an awesome video I saw several fish in the water throughout the video. Those Cutthroat are beautiful thank you for sharing your adventures !

Colorado River cutthroat trout might just be the prettiest of all the cutthroat. Thanks for watching!
Fun Video, thank you.
great video 👍😊
Beautiful fish! Beautiful pools. And the second camera angle is a nice touch.
Thanks!
I so enjoy this channel. I have fished trout, bluegill, etc. since a tiny little girl. It's challenging and relaxing both. Thanks for taking us along❣

Well said! Thanks Michael.
It;s exquiiste ountry there isnt it? :-)
Good work. And you can't catch them all :) leave them for next time. Good night I'm gonna get some sleep
"The handiwork of a very skilled landscape architect"....I know him and have a very good relationship with him.

Magnificent stream! Gorgeous fish. I can smell the pines and dead wood. Lucky you!! :-)
That looks so fun! Am going to have to try it, but first need to get set up with rod and flies 😅
Nice location. I have the HM30R - Love it, it's perfect for east coast headwater creeks.
I'd like to pick up one of those too. Thanks for watching!

We grew up hunting small trout. We actually started wearing camo to get close. Sun location (shadow) obviously a huge factor.
Yep, shadow is big. It can be tricky to both keep your shadow in check while also getting in the best spot to cast.
At 11:03, there's another good sized trout chasing your catch.
When you go out on a trip , do you do the filming for both of your channels on that one trip ? Love your vlogs and have a hard time waiting for another Saturday to come for new vlogs . 🙂
It depends. Sometimes a trip is just SUV RVing-focused, and other trips are Tenkara Addict-focused, and other trips are a mix. This trip was a mix.
I used to kind of hate the idea of zoom rods before I got the Dragontail FoxFIRE and started using it more. It's so powerful being able to collapse it down to 6 feet when needed, then extend it all the way up to 9 feet if it's possible. Those were some beautiful cutthroat!

My Kurenai is H 30 a little over 8' , it is one of my favorite small to tiny stream rod 😀
It looks like a great little rod!
11:14 in your video i can see a trout swiming in the pool while ur dealing with your catch
I believe there are several you can see throughout the video in the super clear water. Thanks for watching, Steve!
it was a pretty large one , too ...laughing to myself just a little when it charged at his net and he still didn't see it...not poking fun- he was focused on the caught fish..
Awesome vid
You should come down to Elk Creek PA, huge bows.

It’s an older model of Rhodo. Same rod, different coloring.
I have several videos of me catching CRCT in southern Utah from a few years ago. Beautiful area!
Losing a fly gives the fish, and the fisherman, time to bleed off adrenaline and reset so not all bad. I have the Sato (10'8", 11'10", 12'9"). It appears the Rhodo (8'10", 9'9", 10'6") would be the perfect compliment.
One of my favorite line of rods , I was lucky to get a shorter one some years ago , I don't think they make it any more ????
I think both the Kurenai and the Rhodo are still available.
Bought my first tenkara rod a little while ago after following your channel and I'm in love with it! If have a chance to get a Pro Spec 2 way 36--31 if you like a shorter zoom rod , I do not think you will be disappointed .
I have the Pro Spec 320 but not the 360. Great rod. The 320 would have been perfect for this creek.
Beautiful little creek. Even at nine feet, the rhodo may have been a tad too long.
I think it was a good fit for this stream. Don't worry, I'll get that Kurenai on the water sooner or later 😄
@@TenkaraAddict I await the Nissin Air Stage Hakubai 240.
When you say 9’ line, is that the length of the line and the tippet or just the line?
Just the line. The tippet is another few feet.
been using a few of your fly patterns and they work in well in colorado, i fish allot in the arkansas river was just letting you know.
I've fished half a dozen small creeks in Colorado with them. Good to hear they work on bigger stuff too!
@@TenkaraAddict thanks for the reply
good
Thank you
What is the biggest trout you caugh. I have a 13' setup hooked some 14" but not landed. I use 5x over in the Beaverkill NY
@Tenkara Addict, What Tenkara setup would you carry in a bug out bag and why?
Depends entirely on the water I'd be expecting. There is no one rod that is good for both tiny creeks and wide-open rivers.
Yeah my first ever tenkara came broken, I just slid my Lillian Over the tip.
I truly enjoy your adventures. I have a question that has been a problem for me.... Why do the trout you catch never swallow the hook? I assume you're using a #12 or #14 size hook, yet they are always removed with no effort whatsoever. Share the secret.
I don't know, to be honest. If you're using barbless hooks and setting the hook decently, you shouldn't have any problem with removing the hook
Where can I buy Idaho Killer Kebari flies. I don’t tie flies, so need to purchase them, but I can only find Idaho Killer Bug flies.

What's your location in this video? Awesome videos BTW
That info is always in the description if I don't mention it directly in the video. This was in Utah.
Where did you get your net?
You should carry a small bag of fish pellets so you can drop a bit in each pool. As a thank you to the fish. ZEN
Hey when describe what fly you are using would you mind also saying the size of it
Thanks
Always size 13 unless I say otherwise 👍
I enjoy your videos. How do you avoid trespassing on private property, and possibly getting shot at? Are these all Federal and State public lands that you fish, or are most of the landowners just friendly? I asked because I saw an orange property line tape in a tree on this video.
That's a rod most use for micro fishing I think.
What is "level line"?
