If you're bad at poaching, then try Bob & Mike Bryan's "Cat & Mouse" drill. It's a fun way to improve your anticipation (and volleys!). The Bryan Bros have been doing this drill their entire career, and it's helped them win more Grand Slam Doubles Titles than any other team in history.
Hands down the best doubles poaching/net play video I've ever seen, ANYWHERE. Nicely done. Huge thanks goes out to you and the Bryan Bros.
You're welcome!
This is really good! I’ll implement this in my next doubles match!
Gold advice from the boys! Great job MB/BB
How can anyone not love lessons from the BBs
Really useful tips .. Thank you to you & the Bryan Brothers 🙏
You're welcome! Happy Thanksgiving!
Fuzzy Yellow Balls Good Wishes & Happy Thanksgiving to you & your loved ones 🙏
Even Bryan bros hate low volleys
Interesting tips. But why are you demonstrating poaching from the returning team as opposed to the serving team? Or does it make a difference?
Good question! Cues and tells are the same. And practicing poaching as the returning team is important because players naturally have a defensive mindset so they end up missing opportunities.
Thanks for the clarification. Looking forward to seeing the Bryan Bros. in SF next month.
How does one take a closer position to the net to enhance the volley effort without leaving a larger vulnerability to the lob?
Great video, thanks so much for posting. Mike was serving and then following the ball in each time. If I'm the net player, should I follow these same principles when the two baseline players are staying at the baseline and rallying? There's not enough time to close in and back off on every ball, so how do you decide when to close in and try a poach? Thanks!
That's a good question, I was thinking the same thing. At 3.5 -4.0 doubles, the server routinely stays back, and then its a groundstroke game with 1 up 1 back. If you leave early, you get passed down the line, if you leave late, you're in the partner's way. Tough one
"Even at 5'8" i can poach from here"
Said by all 5'5" men 😂 jk
Well ... wow.
I dont have a very strong overhead (if you feed me an easy overhead, 50/50 Ill mishit it). If the opposing team knows that I'm this close to the net, I'm assuming this wouldnt be a good play for me?
