We were in Capri over 10yrs ago. 2 tips : If capable, hire a scooter and scoot to Anacapri, which is much more relaxing and less chaotic than Capri, but equally beautiful. Hire a private boat (best if you could find another couple to split the cost) and get to the Blue Grotto after 5pm when the crowds are gone. My husband and the other couple (who shared the boat) swam into the Blue Grotto, almost owned it by themselves! Then again, this was >10yrs ago, maybe things have changed a lot! Capri is super expensive, but still, one should stop there if on the Amalfi Coast.

Thanks for the WARNING... sad how tourism has ruined many places. I am glad I started my traveling 40 years ago when things were still quite wonderful to visit! ♥

We aren't really scooter people and based on some of the crazy things we saw drivers (probably tourists) doing, it's hard for us to recommend our viewers do it when they're not familiar with the roads. I do think that Italy has had such a surge of tourists in the last couple of years that it may not be what you remember. I do wish we had focused on Anacapri and skipped Capri proper. And maybe it's a better experience in October when the tourists are mostly gone. But it's interesting to hear that late in the afternoon you had such a great experience. We read that the most beautiful colors are around 2pm, so 5pm is encouraging! -Judy

There were times that it was pretty frustrating. Some people are saying that ferries from Sorrento or Salerno are a better experience, but you're still at the mercy of good weather. If the ferries aren't operating, it's a whole other beast. And we were reluctant initially to visit the Amalfi Coast, but it was on our daughter's bucket list as part of her first time to visit Italy, so we had to go! -Judy

Capri does look beautiful, but I think I would skip it. Too difficult to get there, and I am not an upscale shopper. Thanks for sharing all the info about the Amalfi Coast. It was interesting and helpful for future trip planning!!

Thanks for watching, Linda. We aren't shoppers at all, so a lot of the experience was lost on us. We also think that it's a lot of effort if someone's intention is to shop at expensive chain stores. Even our 30-year old daughter preferred Ravello and Positano over Capri. -Judy

Hi Judy & Kevin! We took the ferry from Sorrento and it was a quick ride, or so we recall. We loved Capri, although we only went for the day. We did venture up to Anacapri and specifically to Villa San Michele, which is now a museum but was the former private home of a physician to one of the Popes. The gardens, and the stunning views, rivaled Villa Rufollo in Ravello, which we also visited. Thanks for helping us revisit our beautiful time on the Amalfi Coast. Next time we're hoping to visit Ischia. Happy travels!

We've heard great things about Ischia, Diana, and we do wish we had focused more on Anacapri. We might have enjoyed that more than Capri proper. Of course, Capri was beautiful, and if ferries are running, then arriving through Sorrento is a great idea. Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! -Judy

Very good and very informative video. Let’s me know that while it might be worth visiting if I have time and the inclination, it’s not something I will go out of my way to visit. Sounds like there are so many other places in Italy that are just as beautiful, if not more so, and more affordable. 🥰

That sums it up nicely, Rebecca! It's a beautiful island, but out of everyplace, we all agreed it was our least favorite. We definitely preferred Ravello and Positano much more. There are many charming cities in Italy that don't come with the heavy price tag of Capri. Thank you so much for watching! And sorry for the delay; we're currently visiting our son in San Francisco. -Judy

Loved the video, as always. But I agree with you on the overall sentiment of Capri. Our daughters and some of our friends went and spent a day, AND loved it! But definitely not for me. We spent that day having a fantastic time on Amalfi exploring and enjoying ourselves, while they spent the day jostled by the throngs of tourists!!! Not my scene. Very glad that you went though.

It's beautiful, but it wasn't our scene, either! -Judy

Capri was a completely different experience for me. I sailed privately there from Sorrento on a tiny boat which included around the island for 125Euro. The man was a local and shared all the great spots that are non touristy which is thankfully where I had chosen to stay for eight nights. There were so many small local piazas with five table restaurants that were super affordable and the service was appreciative and impeccable. I even visited a far end of the island by bus to a farm and restaurant where I was given a free tour and treated like family. From Capri I ferried to Positano and another destination. I can say I enjoyed both for their uniqueness but perhaps had a similar experience to you in that regard. One day is not enough to give a true review which is why SLOW travel is so important. My Capri living as a local trip inspired my moving abroad a year later. Congrats on your journey to travel and retirement.🎉

Hi Barbara, We are so glad to hear that your experience in Capri was better than ours! Thank you so much for sharing more about your trip. We were very turned off by how elitist it felt and how much (expensive) shopping there was everywhere. We much prefer slow travel, and your experience is one of the reasons we do it. Ideally we spend a month in one place and explore from there. We sometimes do day trips, but we know that they only give us a partial experience. Even a week somewhere-which we do sometimes-still doesn't give us the deep experience of living among locals, BUT there are times that's all we can manage, so we have those imperfect experiences anyway. Our time on the Amalfi Coast and through Italy with our daughter was specifically because she wanted to see as much of Italy as she could in two weeks. It was an eye-opening experience for us because it's so different from the way we typically travel. We shared it with our viewers because we know that a day is all some will ever get to have somewhere, so our first reaction may be similar to the reaction they'll have. I wish we had been more prepared with less touristy things to do in Capri (and focused more on Anacapri as well).
We have a video from mid last year when Kevin basically said slow travel or no travel that you might align with! For the most part, we made the decision to spend a month in the majority of places since we created that video. -Judy

We are going next year towards the end of May, 3 nights in Capri, as we want to explore at leisure the island, already booked a place about 12 minutes walk from the port...we won't be shopping and we may just even eat 1 dinner in a restaurant the rest of the days I'll be cooking a simple dinner and make sandwiches for lunches as well as make our own breakfast..really going to try it to be a budget trip if possible... I can not wait, im into gardening so i hope the gardens and flowers are still in full glorious blooms... I was in positano in 2018 for a day trip only and we canceled Capri because it was raining on the day we were gonna go, but did a day trip in Amalfi and Ravello from Salerno which was our home base for 4 nights.
I love your videos by the way, very informative!

How wonderful for you, JadeeCee! If you've read through the comments from this video, people are suggesting that Anacapri is lovely with lots to do. The water might be a little on the chillier side, but you will be so happy to arrive before the crowds are in full swing. We hope you love it. We know that the brief stop we made there probably isn't representative of a main stay. By the time we got to Capri, I think we had our fill of the Amalfi Coast and were a bit ready to move on, especially because we stayed in the hills of Bomerano.

I particularly enjoyed this episode. I appreciate the first hand account, because I missed my chance to see Capri, and I was always curious to see what it’s really like.
It also brings back memories of when my family were staying at Sorrento, trying to book the trip to the blue grotto. We booked 5 seats on a private speedboat, no toilets mind you, for 220eu each! Imagine my relief, when the trip got cancelled due to weather😅 we saved at least 1500eu but now that I’ve seen this video, it’s probably more like 2000eu saved

Thanks for watching, Dan! I think we were fairly spent by the time we got to Capri. We probably would have enjoyed Anacapri more than Capri town center and maybe even a bit more if it would have been our first location versus the fourth day on the Amalfi Coast. We had our private boat tour in Positano, which was lovely and a lot less choppy than the Blue Grotto wait would have been. We were pretty surprised that our daughter was underwhelmed by Capri and preferred Positano and Ravello much more. That's a lot of cash for you to have spent. Originally we thought the price quoted to us was fairly reasonable, but then we learned that it didn't even include the Blue Grotto. Much wiser to approach it from the dock if you can. But of course, the private boat vendors don't really talk about that! -Judy

I did go to Ana Capri by ferry from Sorento. We went to Sorento by private car from Pompeii. Spent the morning in Pompeii, then our driver took us to a beautiful vineyard for lunch then off to Sorento to catch a ferry to Ana Capri. We did have a 1.5 hr. wait but there were restaurants and a nice beach area to hang out. Ferry ride went direct to Ana Capri uneventful. We stayed at a B&B for 2 nights, which did include breakfast each morning. Lovely place to stay.
I get horrible seasickness, so although we went to the Blue Grotto but, we opted out and ate lunch and hung out at the beach.
The food on the island was fabulous and reasonable. At least in Ana Capri. We also took the sky ride to the top of the island to Monte Solaro.
There is a little cafe & gelato along with a visitor center/ gift shop. There is a lot of walking there for sure. My heart and legs loved it!
Will I go back? Maybe, but for now there are too many other places I want visit. Shopping is expensive on the island.

If anyone is looking to visit Capri, an overnight stay is a MUST. After the crowds leave for the mainland the island is a completely different place at night. Best to spend the daytime in Anacapri and the town of Capri in the evening. It’s also not the place to be on a budget, spend the money on that cocktail to have the best view. Boats from Naples are super easy and frequent!

Hi Gareth, Our usual mode of travel is slow travel. It's only been while we'd been traveling with our daughter that we've traveled so quickly. However, by the time we got to Capri, we were a bit done with the Amalfi Coast. The effort to get there from Bomerano just took too much effort and we didn't like how elitist it felt. We might have enjoyed Anacapri more. We did have those expensive cocktails in both Positano and Ravello, but we'd already seen some incredible views that paying for another overpriced drink wasn't on our agenda. But we are delighted to hear that you had so much better of an experience. We might have to go back to see more of it. -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie Dear JUDY! EH-oo-ro - is much better for an Italian flavor. Helps to be multilingual - there is a serious difference between English vowel sounds and Vowel sounds in a large part of the world - which are "pure" or perhaps "flatter" in sound. In American English, there is a tendency to elongate vowels and unnoticeably adding or tagging them with extra vowel sounds! Example: the letter "O" when pronounced in languages other than English stop at the O, but in English you probably do not realize that it is pronounced as O-oo! 😄 Hence two vowel sounds emerge. Same with "E" which is EH" at the end of my name. In Spanish and Italian, there is a tendency in English to pronounce it En-ri-KEH-y, which sounds like EnriKAY :) I know this is long and a bit pedantic to most. But I hope it was not a bother to read! ♥♥♥♥

It's been a while since I've been to Capri, but it seems like it was only about 30 minutes or so from Sorrento by ferry. I was there twice with friends and we just did the hike to Villa Jovis, the Roman ruins on the coast which looks back to the Sorrento Peninsula I'm sure there are other hiking options, but that's all I can contribute. 🙂 Is it worth a visit? Sure! Are there other places on the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento Peninsula that you should explore? Well, sure! Do your research and do something that others have not done. Like what you say, well, hike from Praiano to Positano via the Il Sentiero degli Dei. Hike from Nerano to Massa Lubrense or any other hike in the area. Do something different and have an authentic experience. Also, do you research before you leave so you understand where you'll start and end, along with the transportation options. Do something to get away from the typical tourist experience.

You are right that it's a reasonable distance from Sorrento, but it's not always a guarantee that the ferries are operational. Technically Sorrento isn't part of the Amalfi Coast, but it's a good place to stay if you are visiting Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, etc. and also the Amalfi Coast. We liked it, but we didn't love it, especially compared to Ravello and Positano, which we personally enjoyed more. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, especially some of the other hikes! -Judy

One WEEK on Capri was absolutely worth every dollar. It helps if you take the time to read about the history of the island and don't just tag along the 1/2 day tourist traps. 3 weeks Rome, 1 week Venice. Slow down and 'know' where you are.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  3 месяца назад

Hi Jim, we are typically slow travelers and spend a month in each location, so this type of fast travel is not what we are used to. However, we don’t love Venice and wouldn’t spend a week there. And the super posh surroundings of Capri weren’t our style. You may have more dollars to spend than we do! We preferred Positano and Ravello much more. We agree with that much time in Rome, and we’ve spent a week each in Assisi, Genoa, Florence, Verona, and Torino, and 10 days in Orvieto. We’ve also spent two weeks each in Naples and Palermo. We do typically “know” where we are. At the start of our Amalfi Coast video series, we mention that this was our daughter’s first time in Italy. She had expressed an interest to see a broad cross-section of Italy, and that’s what we share in our Amalfi Coast series.

Hi Julia, I just responded to your comment, but I don't know where it went! Thank you so much for sharing your opinion about Capri and also weighing in about Ischia. We'd briefly looked into Ischia, but our daughter had a lot more travel through Italy she wanted to see. We actually ended up skipping Naples in favor of Lake Como. Whether it was the right decision, I can't say. Lake Como was lovely, but there is a lot of history in Naples, even if it can be a bit gritty. Of course, this is why we travel. There is so much to see that we always want to come back and see what we missed or skipped. We weren't sure if we didn't give Capri a fair shake by only spending the day, but all the travel to get around the Amalfi Coast burned us out a little bit and it was a lot of travel in a short amount of time, especially for us who are used to spending much more time in one place than our daughter prefers! So it helps to hear that you aren't a fan of Capri, either. Thanks so much, Julia! -Judy
