Personally I prefer the little rubber nipple protectors that attach to the reg. That way there's no risk of losing it. Plus it's like $2 for a five pack.

You said the reg extender wasn't really about protecting the tank
But they way you describe the thing I think one could say that it will protect your bottles threads because you wont be screwing anything directly on and off it once this extender is set

I use the regulator extender for my 48/4500 tank on my aXe.
