Women’s rights being rolled back in Afghanistan - BBC News

- Following the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan women’s rights are being rolled back with education being denied to girls, and women forced out of the work place.
At the same time the country is hit by shortages caused by sanctions imposed by Western nations. People are starving and many, mostly women, stand in lines to wait for aid.
One woman told the BBC that “the issue of [women’s] education and literacy is meaningless when you’re dying from hunger.”

After years of training and weapons supplied the Afgan Army would not fight for their country.
You need to understand both the history and nature of Afghanistan especially under the late Ghani regime.
Widespread corruption within Afghan defence and interior ministries were rife, with food and munitions etc, which were meant for front line troops, being continually ‘stolen’ and sold on the black market - most of it ending up in the hands of the Taliban.
Moreover, there was a lot of embezzlement and corruption within the military itself: For a lot of unpaid soldiers the lavish lifestyles of their commanders was a bitter pill to swallow (a measurable percentage of soldiers simply elected to lay down their weapons under the Taliban amnesty rather than fight for their ‘elitist’ leaders and corrupt politicians).
And let’s not forget the lack of ideological cohesion within the Army itself. Put simply, there was no sense of national duty or belonging within the ranks, such is the nature of the disparate Afghan tribal system. And this was compounded by the serious mistrust of their so-called leaders, with conspiracy theories of back-door deals being done with the Taliban, rife amongst the rank and file. Bottom line, any Army needs strong leadership, trust and unity of command. And all this was severely lacking and not helped by the powers that be continually replacing senior military leaders just because the wind changed direction.
I suppose it’s all too easy to sit and condemn from afar, especially when you have little understanding of how society behaves in countries such as these.
I could go on, but hopefully this will provide a flavour of how ideals and priorities can differ immensely from one country to the next, especially in those where life is cheap and you will do just about anything to survive.
@@nevillemccarter242 this sounds well articulated. I wish it was not so

It's quite naive to believe that the national and social agendas of this nation would contradict the deep-rooted religious and customary beliefs of this nation. There will always be a reversion to limitations on the rights of women in this region.
It would take a modern country at least 20 years and trillions of dollars to unroot the deep-rooted religious and customary beliefs of Afghanistan that you mentioned.
Problem is, the US occupied Afghanistan, and then enacted a series of 10 different, separate, incoherent 2-year billion dollar plans that didn't have any long-term purpose in mind. Hence, they failed, didn't achieve anything, and ended up hated by the locals.
Islam dosn't limit womens rights. Its more a cultural thing.
@@roadent217 they didn’t fail they succeeded. They set up a puppet state, bribed the puppet state and seized all natural resources of Afghanistan (including crude oil ofc) effectively. @@kardoxcenna260 You're mixing up Afghanistan and Iraq. Candidates that may be more appealing if the local government (the Taliban) turn out to be more hostile to US interests than the alternatives (it was). All Afghanistan has in natural resources is poppy (opium - heroin) production.
In any case, your comment doesn't make sense. The US puppet was the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. They've just been deposed by the Taliban. The Taliban have always been direct enemies of the US - they're only, barely, indirect allies through their ties to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, but that's more of the latter two countries going against USA's interests than anything more sinister. The US would have been much better off had the Taliban not existed, and US could directly rule Afghanistan in peace.
If any superpower were to benefit from the recent events, it could be China. But definitely not the US. At the very least, the hit to America's prestige has been too immense to be worth the cost.
