Leaving matters of the state to the state is how a power plant cracked open and almost wiped out the continent thanks to the state's greed, incompetence, and denial of reality.
We will forget. We're forgetting now. Censoring vital information, shutting down dissident voices, name-calling and labeling inconvenient facts as "hate speech" or "misinformation" --- "mal information", now there's a term suited for rigid totalitarian thinking. Chernobyl is where that disgusting sort of behavior leads. It also leads to things like the covid disaster, endless idiotic wars and a thoroughly corrupted government. And it will lead to worse, unless we stop this in its tracks.
Those firefighters had no idea what they were dealing with. The USSR didn't train anyone of them against those kind of situations. It was like sending a soldier with his rifle, to a nuclear war combat.
Most professional firefighters, even today, don’t receive cbrn training. Usually you find dedicated crews at a facility or within the federal government.
I still watch this occasionally, as it's one of the best miniseries ever done. It's hard to believe that Craig Main, the creator of the Jackass series built this, but he did. And it's unbelievably beautiful and painful. There is also an excellent podcast, hosted by Peter Sagal that interviews Craig episode by episode. He explains the details, the reasons for artistic license, and the meaning behind every episode.
I always found Chernobyl interesting, as it was my grandfather' and his family's home town. They left around the time of the Russian Revolution. The farming town of Chetnobyl was about 10 miles south of the reactor.
What a truly sad tribute to one of the greatest disasters of our time! The cast were so perfect in their roles & representations, to the point that some scenes were like watching an official documentary, rather than a Movie.
