What happens with an economy if it year after year has big trade surplus? I live in a European country which has run a quite big trade surplus for more than 20 years. How will it end? Shouldn't the import start to rise at some point?
Not if the money is going to an elite who then lends it out to foreign governments and businesses.. If the mass of workers in the country are paid low salaries then they will not be able to afford expensive imported goods.. And anyway if your country is exporting a lot of those same goods then the local suppliers will be supplying the local market..
In theory, the value of your currency should increase, making your exports less competitive on the world markets. If you belong to the Eurozone, this adjustment will depend on how the other Euro countries are doing and on the interest rates set by the ECB.
In practice, central banks rarely let currency adjust to trade surpluses. The accumulated trade surpluses may then be badly recycled and end up in a banking crisis. The Japanese overpaid for US trophy assets in the 80's, the German banks were the largest buyers of US subprime loans in the 00's, and, a few years ago, Chinese state banks were lending a lot of money to countries unlikely to service their debts.
@@alaindumas1824 I live in Denmark. In the late 70' we were in big financial problem. On the brink of collapse. Great visual representation of the real economic balance of power in the world. It is particularly striking that the supposedly "richest country" in the world is not even among the TOP 20 of these countries. As well as ? - The USA has an alleged nominal GDP of about $22 trillion, but if you are in debt with half of this GDP worldwide, you can of course not generate a "surplus", not even with financial speculation or real estate bubbles ... In this respect, one should probably describe the countries as "rich" that also generate a corresponding "surplus" and make it available to society for further development or invest in meaningful projects... Yes, such countries are really rich in my opinion, not a few billionaires who have "tinkered" their own world in the USA and don't even know anymore what it's like to work hard and hard every day for a reasonably bearable life.. . If the "profit" of an economy only benefits a few more and more, it cannot be a rich country, but a very poor country, because this state doesn't give a damn about most of the people who actually work for this "wealth". ..! In this respect, the USA is a very, very poor country!
You can have a huge trade surplus and still have a population living in poverty. It says nothing about standard of living, GDP per capita etc. Many countries with a large surplus are exporting a single thing, fossil fuel. They might have to import just about everything else and the population doesn’t get a share of the trade surplus.
@@Jonsson474 What you write is of course correct. The surplus alone says nothing about the standard of living in the respective country. Because this depends on whether and how this surplus is distributed within the respective society. A certain part is needed to make further investments in order to continue to be able to secure a surplus with competitive products in the future. But a not inconsiderable part must also flow back into society in order to secure the standard of living. However, this is no longer the case in most western democracies. WHAT you get the surplus from doesn't really matter... Some countries do it with high-tech products, other countries get their surplus by selling raw materials (it doesn't matter if it's fossil fuels, rare earths or valuable metals!). In the end, it is the result that counts, and that means that other countries are now better able to improve the standard of living for their citizens than is the case in the western industrialized nations!
Debt isn't a big deal for US as long as dollar is the reserve currency. I mean it can print trns of dollars without any problem. No country has a privilege to do that
@@prasanth2601 Well, it's not quite that simple, because for the long-term stability of a currency, there must be an economic equivalent. Americans are running into endless debt at the expense of the rest of the world, with no regard for "losses"... We saw what the "DOLLAR" is really worth in 2008, when the stock market crash destroyed trillions of dollars within a few hours. The reason for this was wild financial speculation by the greedy bankers, and it was primarily the small investors who suffered the most. The argument: "You have to be able to afford debt!" is outright nonsense and contradicts all economic rules and laws. In essence, the US would have been broke long ago if measured by normal market rules. Any other company would be hopelessly bankrupt! The dollar is only held by the naked fear of investors because they see no alternatives. Simply printing money is therefore not a solution and will sooner or later lead to an even worse financial crash!

Great visual representation of the real economic balance of power in the world. It is particularly striking that the supposedly
"richest country" in the world is not even among the TOP 20 of these countries. As well as ? - The USA has an alleged nominal
GDP of about $22 trillion, but if you are in debt with half of this GDP worldwide, you can of course not generate a "surplus",
not even with financial speculation or real estate bubbles ...
In this respect, one should probably describe the countries as "rich" that also generate a corresponding "surplus" and make it
available to society for further development or invest in meaningful projects...
Yes, such countries are really rich in my opinion, not a few billionaires who have "tinkered" their own world in the USA and don't
even know anymore what it's like to work hard and hard every day for a reasonably bearable life.. .
If the "profit" of an economy only benefits a few more and more, it cannot be a rich country, but a very poor country, because
this state doesn't give a damn about most of the people who actually work for this "wealth".
@@Jonsson474
What you write is of course correct.
The surplus alone says nothing about the standard of living in the respective country.
Because this depends on whether and how this surplus is distributed within the respective society.
A certain part is needed to make further investments in order to continue to be able to secure a surplus
with competitive products in the future.
But a not inconsiderable part must also flow back into society in order to secure the standard of living.
However, this is no longer the case in most western democracies.
WHAT you get the surplus from doesn't really matter... Some countries do it with high-tech products,
other countries get their surplus by selling raw materials (it doesn't matter if it's fossil fuels, rare earths or
valuable metals!).
In the end, it is the result that counts, and that means that other countries are now better able to improve
the standard of living for their citizens than is the case in the western industrialized nations!
Debt isn't a big deal for US as long as dollar is the reserve currency. I mean it can print trns of dollars without any problem. No country has a privilege to do that
@@prasanth2601
Well, it's not quite that simple, because for the long-term stability of a currency, there must be an economic equivalent.
@@h.-u.spengler6366 Well, if you want to look like this, China has 15 or 14 trillion GDP, but its debt is over 15 trillion, and Japan has six trillion debts.

in 2021 chinas trade surplus was over 600 billion usd
Is this a trade surplus or balance of payment surplus? Trade surplus is just the record for the import and export of the country while balance of payment records all the money that came in and out of the country. Tourism, remittances, earnings from online services, etc. are not included in the trade surplus but are included in the balance of payment.

L'Allemagne, vu sa taille et le nombre d'habitants est économiquement un pays plus que redoutable.
Merci mon ami français.
But the main reason for that is the Euro currency.
Before the Euro Germany did not have such a trade surplus. The German surplus was a result of imbalances between the monetary policies of the Euro zone member countries. Almost all of the German trade imbalances are with other Euro zone countries.
