There's a reason, it's the best m3 BMW ever made and there's not that many left. Too many have been crashed or modded.

I have a 330ci E46 and it's just amazing I take it out more than my 2016 A45😂 I was looking at E28 7 series yesterday👍 they all feel like modern cars to me, like proper cars! Everything after 2010 looks and feels the same, I'd rather a car be a great driving experience than have a good sat nav and all that rubbish!

Not sure why people say it's the subframe that cracks. It's the actual boot floor, part of the body of the actual car that splits. The subframe is mounted to this area but is not the problem. Such moneypits.
Same! I am looking to buy one but manuals are really hard to find where I live and they cost at least 30k for a nice one. Wish they were as cheap as in the uk
Had one of these, epic engine, great car blending usability and style, but the lack of steering feel and the fact that 99% of us won't actually see much sideways action (on sticky rubber on dry roads, and with limited torque, it doesn't go sideways easily unless you can drive like sid, and are happy to do so on the road) left me happy but not in love.
My favourite car of all time is the BMW E46 CSL...amari supercars has the finest example in the whole world for sale...it has 2k miles on the clock and it's brand new...my dream car...and he wants 100k for it,if I had the money I would buy it today.

My e46 m3 is also in silver grey with red leather and 71k miles, genuine csl wheels, but it’s an smg, but personally, I’ve never been a fan of the manuals in the e46 m3’s. No rust anywhere, the subframe hasn’t been done but still, nothing wrong with it whatsoever, owned it for 10years! Still the most driver oriented ///m ever made imo👍

So the story goes..... the steering was originally set up by BMW so that optimum feel was to be found when on opposite lock... The SMG for the E46 M3 is fun when it is not giving you any issues... having said that, my SMG stalls quiet often. I have considered converting over to a manual transmission.
Owned m3 manual absolutly loved it, 2nd one was an smg, terrible driving experience compared to manual also smg pump failure didn't help either. Recently bought facelift oxford green 2 manual coupe, fell in love on the test drive, manual is perfect for this particular car.
I agree I also bought an SMG new in 02 and still love it. I also now have a 6Speed SCd Dinan ZCP and yeah it’s a beast and fun. I am not a sideways driver though so..I can get plenty of fun and still love the variety.
I have a 2003 E46 M3 coupe. I’ve done 181,000 miles on original bearings and pulls like a train. I haven’t got the sub frame reinforced, there are a some cracks upon inspection. I will get the racp done soon. The engine management light came on a month ago and I’m told the vanos is gone, so it’s getting a new one plus just to be on the safe side getting the rod bearings done. Did a compression test and it flew through. Look after the car and the M3 will look after you.
Similar story here. My 51 plate cabrio is currently at 143k on the recalled bearing replacements. Had an oil analysis done which read fine and within expected tolerances, despite me pulling the oil from the filter housing which is where I've been since told not to do as it can give a false (high) indicator! No issues at all with the vanos, RACP is getting reinforced shortly and the diff gives a very slight grumble (only from startup) on tight left handers. Compression sitting at an average of 173 across all cylinders at last test. The only main issue I have with the car is the dreaded rot creeping in. When I bought it 4 years ago the PO always parked it on a main street near a seafront so I knew it would be a matter of time before having to spend the big bucks on restoring it. But I couldn't care less, I still have a quiet laugh to myself when I see the comments slagging these off as money pits, etc. Every one of them seems to come from the same types of people - the ones too scared to dive in and go through the (admittedly expensive) journey with what is arguably one of the absolute best drivers' cars ever made. I'd much rather spend my hard earned on this than throwing a fixed amount to the "newer" M cars that give nowhere near the same experience. Good to hear there are other high milers out there still going strong, enjoy y'all!
The vanos gear goes bad, the rod bearings go bad , the rear sub frame goes bad, the smg goes bad also . Other than the bad, the e46 m3 is really fun car!
I did love my E46 M3, but I have to say my E92 is better! No way near as many unreliability worries, the manual gearbox doesn't feel agricultural when its cold, oh and that naughty V8 😍 Coincidentally my E92 M3 is for sale, I won't link it but its the miley beauty that's has the rod bearings replaced, up for 12k on AT!
Always liked the e46 coupe the only problem is the m3 makes to much noise for not enough go for me its same as golf r32 all sound and abit meh, good chassis tho.
My biggest regret is selling my mint 50k miles one maintained by Munich legends three years ago for ..... £12k 🤭. Thinking about selling my f80 and going back to one, more fun on uk roads.
I love these old m3s, played with getting one for ages but settled on my 550hp 335i as was cheaper! Not sure I’ll get the appreciation that the m3s do from the 335i 😂

It’s N54 with stage 2 rb turbos, downpipes, inlets, intake full exhaust, Wagner FMIC, outlet pipes for turbos, 1 step colder plugs and custom tune, u can put an MHD tune on urs which change it so much, I’ve spent a lot of money on mine! 0-60 isn’t very good as can’t get traction but anything after that it’s crazy fast for that power!

E92 m3s were 20k+ at the time, u can get that power now for around £4k 17t eBay turbos TD04s are £800 and have got loads of good reviews! I paid nearer £4K for mine back then 🙈everything I bought had to be imported from America as no one else was making anything for em

My 123d hatchback was a different animal after a Stage 1, became 262 bhp/ 350 lbft and still drives like an absolute beast. Keeping that for the daily commute as it's given me 0 hassle in the 4 yrs I've had it. Still, I obviously have much bigger expectations for this 1. Do you think your car could take an M3 or M5 on the track now?
Do love the E46, but after reading about the rear subframe braking apart, the cylinder head problems, and vanos issue, not for me thanks. And it almost impossible to find a good one.
@RS2002 I bought one recently. 77k on the clock. had rust the usual rust issues, sorted the sub frame out aswell. But no mechanical problems whatsoever. I drive it maybe once a week and its a total joy, worth every penny. Turning it into a race car for track use now.
sparkplug964 I bough one 6 years ago 50k miles 75 now only issues I had was ignition coils and regular oil service only it’s my summer car only if you don’t beat on it they are not bad if you drive it hard than expect to maintain it more
Track mine frequently, changed an smg pump and starter both past 150k. Not a high cost to maintain if you can wrench yourself. Silly to assume this car is expensive.

Ransom it’s a relatively simple fix for those of us with bird brains and the means. You keep watching, we will keep driving.

Rust is more of a wing issue.
The subframe issue is cracking and spot welds popping.

Most people (not all) who says SMG is rubbish are People who have never owned or driven an SMG. SMG Suites the e46 m3's very very well.
True. I daily drove an SMG car for 2 years. It had its moments, but if I ever and in the market for another, I’ll look for another SMG.

@@br4d101 sounds like a lot of 💰 will have to go on this 🚗 so I'll just get a Stage 1 to start with. It's gonna be my big project! My 123d hatchback was a different animal after a Stage 1, became 262 bhp/ 350 lbft and still drives like an absolute beast. Keeping that for the daily commute as it's given me 0 hassle in the 4 yrs I've had it. Still, I obviously have much bigger expectations for this 1. Do you think your car could take an M3 or M5 on the track now?

Do love the E46, but after reading about the rear subframe braking apart, the cylinder head problems, and vanos issue, not for me thanks. And it almost impossible to find a good one.

@RS2002 I bought one recently. 77k on the clock. had rust the usual rust issues, sorted the sub frame out aswell. But no mechanical problems whatsoever. I drive it maybe once a week and its a total joy, worth every penny. Turning it into a race car for track use now.
sparkplug964 I bough one 6 years ago 50k miles 75 now only issues I had was ignition coils and regular oil service only it’s my summer car only if you don’t beat on it they are not bad if you drive it hard than expect to maintain it more
Track mine frequently, changed an smg pump and starter both past 150k. Not a high cost to maintain if you can wrench yourself. Silly to assume this car is expensive.
Not to hard to do the maintenance yourself. Did a vanos rebuild and rod bearings in a week’s time without lift. Runs like a charm.
