  • Herbert Blomstedt is one of the world's most loved and respected conductors. A lifetime's accumulated wisdom, and a deep joy in sharing great music with both players and listeners, seem to radiate from him as soon as he walks into a rehearsal room or onto the stage. In November 2024, at the age of 97, he joined us for a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 that will live long in the memory of everyone involved. This extract is the opening of the elegiac fourth movement, Adagio: Sehr langsam und noch zurückhaltend (very slowly and held back).

When I studied conducting in Stockholm in the 80s we went together with our teacher (a student of Blomstedt) to watch him rehearse with the Swedish RSO. Afterwards we went to see him in the conductor's room. He opened the door. Smiled and said: " There you are! All my grand kids!" An amazing Grandpa.

One of the best concerts of my life. I walked home in the freezing cold in a daze! I was sat not far from Visontay, the concertmaster, he was as mesmerising to watch as Blomstedt. I'd love to see footage of the whole performance... maybe if we all ask reaaally nicely?

One of the greatest concerts I’ve heard the Philharmonia give, and my memory stretches back to the late 60s. Plus the incomparable Herbert Blomstedt. A truly unique experience.

I was sitting behind the Double Bass section. Absolutely mesmerising. It would be good to know how Blomstedt managed to garner such an incredible performance from these players. It is a pity the BBC neither broadcast it live (radio or TV) nor recorded it for posterity (same with Bruckner 7 by the same team a few years ago - would have made the best performance of that symphony in that year available widely but the solo pianist asked for the concert not to be broadcast!!). For this Mahler there was a 4K camera (this view) throughout, and a series of (c. 12?) microphones above the orchestra, so I expect the Philharmonia has the entire thing, and it will be great if they bring out a DVD or just a sound recording. This would have made a fascinating documentary also, with rehearsal footage and interviews with the players and the conductor. It is a pity that the BBC doesn't seem to do "event" programming in classical music any more unless it is loaded with cheap gimmicks and emotional stories. How is the audience supposed to see and hear the difference between run of the mill stuff and this kind of exemplary performance?

Being there was an absolutely transcendental experience. Definitely one of the best Mahler 9s I've experienced live (and I've seen many 🙂). Thanks so much for bringing back maestro Blomstedt, I can only hope you post the whole symphony one day!

Absolutely glorious. The orchestra sounds superb. I have heard HB with the NYPO and he gets a level of playing far above other conductors because the players LOVE him. The Philharmonia obviously love him too.

Well, you can watch Blomstedt, LIVE, next Saturday in a livestream from the Berlin Philharmonic conducting Bruckner's 9th. Back in September, the Royal Stockholm Phil livestreamed Blomstedt conducting a concert including Brahms' 1st. With a flip of a switch the Philharmonia could have livestreamed this concert for you to view as well. They just refuse to flip that switch. Instead of begging them for more scraps from canned recordings, why not have some dignity and self respect and tell give them a hard time for refusing to provide any livestreams to the global audience the way other symphonies do, and which they could EASILY do. You want to know some other orchestras doing livestreaming of high quality concerts? The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Phil, the Bergen Phil, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Gulbenkian symphony in Lisbon, the Sao Paolo Symphony in Brazil, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfrut Radio Symphony Orchestra. But the Philharmonia? Oh no. Instead, they toss you little recorded scraps. It's insulting, arrogant, and backwards all rolled up in one. Consider me NOT impressed.

This recording is just a static camera and they don't even appear to have mics dotted throughout the orchestra, aside from the one to the right of the conductors stand, unlike other orchestras who live record their concerts. On a positive note it is in 4k which is great. It must have been an incredible experience for those in the hall. With all that said they would have still undoubtedly sold out the hall even if they had opted to livestream this concert so really no reason not to. As @ctafrance has said many other orchestras livestream many of their concerts.
