    Trummy plays a damned nice solo. They each sound typical and individual. Kai, Carl, Urbie, Trummy. I love this!!!

    Thanks for opening my ears to the great Carl Fontana - wow what a phenomenal player, who I had never had a true appreciation for up until now.

    It does come down to a matter of taste but here’s my litmus test: which trombonist’s solo holds your interest for its entire duration? It’s the difference between just playing a series of impressive licks vs telling a story. The former is more technique and mechanics while the latter approaches pure art.
    Total respect for all four of these greats, but by the criteria I described above, I think Carl stands alone.

    I'd love to have the skill of one of these great trombonist's, OK that won't happen so i'll just play like Arthur Carr, Frank Rosolino would have fitted in well with these four, great stuff.

    JJ SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THIS...HE STARTED THE MULTI-NOTE-FAST-PHRASE MOVEMENT, AND GAVE BIRTH TO ALL THESE GUYS, EXCEPT TRUMMY...HE AND KAI WERE MUSICAL BONE PARTNERS ON SEVERAL CD'S!

    Carl was second, who was first?
    Third?
    Fourth was Trummy.
    I'll have to play it again.
    Kai and Urbie were not distinctively themselves, I thought.

    • @davesenior1
      @davesenior1 9 лет назад +1

      The first is distinctly recognizable as Kai. The rest speak for themselves too...

    • @geraldnichols2722
      @geraldnichols2722 9 лет назад +1

      +davesenior1 It was Kai, Carl, Urbie and then Trummy; but I only got Kai by process of elimination because he didn't sound himself here IMO.
      Carl as always was hard to match!

    • @davesenior1
      @davesenior1 9 лет назад +1

      +Gerald Nichols I don't understand your IMO comment - They are all so unique you shouldn't need to think about it. They are all instantly recognizable (as I said, Kai definitely here). Comparing is pointless because they all have something different which I'm sure we could discuss forever. Anyways, I love 'em all. Happy listening...

    Fontana's the only one worth a listen. The other three are so blatty and their styles aren't as distinguished.

    • @tejanoviejo
      @tejanoviejo 8 лет назад +5

      +Cousin Dupree Wouldn't say Carl was the only one worth a listen, but you've got a point. This just demonstrates how, no matter the tempo, no matter how hard-driving, hard-swinging the tune might be, Carl Fontana always played with an exquisite sense of melody and taste. He also was a master at using the mic, which perhaps is why he never sounded "blatty."
