In the live videos, John Rzeznik has no high e string on his guitar. I am presuming he ditches the b string altogether and puts the high e in its place.

Word of advice the "A string" goes up to D and not down to D otherwise you get this flat sound throughout the song when on the 5th fret. Try it out and you will hear what I mean.

LOVE this song! Great lesson! I tried a few other lessons, but it was sounding v mechanical. It's a lot more flow-ey now. I changed the tuning and didn't pop a string, win win!
I learnt this song a while ago now. It's awesome. I can't stress enough about changing strings to heavier gage ones. If you use light strings the big e string is too slack and the slightest touch just sends it buzzing. I have the world's cheapest guitar off eBay which is strung and tuned just for this. Also, check out goo goo dolls acoustic season 2 -- iris on RUclips. John Rzeznik plays this on his own in this tuning and is a great way to learn it as you see most of his fretting hand. The keen eyed amongst us will see he hasn't got a high e string on it lol
I recently upgraded to a new guitar and dedicated my starter to playing Iris. Threw 2 low e, 2 d, and 2 high e strings on and it alleviates the pain of the tuning. I also think it sounds more authentic since these strings seem more comfortable in this tuning.

DUDE! Fantastic video. Thanks for doing this. It's an unusual count for an unusual tuning. All around unusual which sounds amazing. Can't wait to start exploring this one. So after exploring this tonight (and I have long way to go) I notice my pinky is covering the three bottom strings on the 12th fret just enough to get some harmonics without really trying and as I think about it, i seem to recall hearing harmonic in the original - does that seem right?

Hey stranger! You could also tune your guitar in Open D so it probably wouldn't be a problem as you lower the string's tension and also adds a beautiful atmosphere to the song
Thanks Justin, I loved this supremely uncool song when it came out in my teens and it never ceases to be a blast form the past no matter how many times I hear it. Went and watched Tim Pierce's video right after this. I guess the tuning and maybe even string change is quite a lot of trouble for just one song but I might give it a go someday.

My guitar could not handle this tuning. Strings sounded fine played open but were out of tune when played higher up the fret board.. such a unique song, not easily replicated

How difficult would it be to tune my Ibanez S520 (with locking tremolo) to this lmao talk about a nightmare. I doubt if the spring adjustment could even go that far, with the standard "Super Slinky" strings I use.
