  • After the steam test I took my Sweet Pea for a little run and realised the timing wasn't great so nothing for it but to adjust it.

That was very interesting Julia I know I had the same problem with my Loco and it’s definitely the rear springs on my one got to be really hard as you said it’s a knock on effect when setting valve gear I find I must say it took a long time to sort my one well done
    Regards glen 👍🏻👍🏻🚂🚂

Thanks Glen glad you enjoyed it 😀 it's not 100% yet but should be run well enough. 👍

Hi Julia, funnily enough, that is exactly what Roundhouse describe for setting their valve timing 😉 Just with Walschaerts you have to make sure the return cranks are at 90 degrees to the axle centre.

Hi Andy, yes it's not an original idea 🤣 the return cranks are pinned so I'm assuming (!) They were correct when the loco was built 😀 it's certainly better than it was

Hi Julia I was thinking when we did the timing on my sweet pea we filled the boiler and saddle tank up with water then set the timing hope this is some help glen

Good point Glen I didn't do that , however my one has like a thick wall clear tubing over the springs at the rear so I'm not sure how much the rear suspension moves at all. The front is very soft in comparison so might end up doing a nodding dog impression 🤣
