@@RustyMew Nope. Totally wrong, IMO. Entirely depends on the game's story/gameplay ratio, honestly. Persona 3's gameplay is condensed in an absolutely atrocious repetitive piece of garbage known as "Tartarus", yet people love that game to death because of the story. Couldn't stand it myself, but I was able to enjoy Persona 4 with its slightly less atrocious gameplay, all thanks to the story. There was enough of it to keep me engaged and it was good enough to keep me going. A visual novel with poor gameplay can also be definitely salvaged by a good story. The story/gameplay ratio in those games is so high I don't think they should even be called games, but people insist on doing it for some reason. Steins;Gate was a masterpiece, yet the only thing it had to call gameplay was clicking through dialogue and answering text messages. This game, though? A disappointment on both fronts. This game was made by the creators of Danganronpa, Zero Escape, Ever17 and Remember11. The "story" bar was much, much higher than this.

As a collaboration between the creators of Danganronpa and Zero Escape, this game was honestly a big letdown for me tbh. The art style is cute and the dialogue and characters are charming, but it’s clear that gameplay isn’t their forté sine it’s mainly what hampers this game. I honestly think it would’ve been far better if it was just a visual novel and not some clunky puzzle/platformer with tedious and frustrating gameplay. And the story also not being good enough to be able to slog through said tedious and frustrating gameplay.

In many ways, World's End Club is the opposite of New Super Mario Bros. U, as both games are platformers which debuted outside the Switch; the former has a lovely artstyle, intriguing story and memorable characters yet is lacking in gameplay with the floaty physics and awkward level design; the latter has excellent gameplay with its great controls, superb level design and fun extras/multiplayer modes, yet has a throwaway story and plain Mario presentation which some people don't seem to like.
It's quite amusing that the Dangonronpa/Zero Escape writers can make a thrilling story, yet can't seem to create captivating gameplay. Go figure.

I played the demo for this, and I absolutely agree with all your criticisms 100%. I've been meaning to watch a commentary-free walkthrough of the game is I could see what happens to the characters, but even then the cel-shaded graphics still look like they were made by someone playing around in MikuMiku Dance rather than a professional company (although like you said it was originally an Apple Arcade release). I think the narrative would be better suited for a form of passive media, like the manga adaptation that was released (although the art style is completely different from Takegarou's so it doesn't have the same charm imo), and it might be best suited for an original anime. This video also perfectly underscores why game demos give me trust issues these days, and I remember the demo for Yo-Kai Watch bring pretty bad too

I never thought I’d see a discussion of World’s End Club that references The Lord of the Rings this much lol.
Anyway, yeah, this game has merit in spite of not always being traditionally “fun.” I like the characters a fair amount and the biggest narrative flaw, to me, is that the world lacks the relatively clear rules of something like Zero Escape or Danganronpa, so when a character goes “Oh, I have this power I’ve never mentioned before!” it’s always a little bit “SORRY, YOU DID COULD DO WHAT???” lol.

I don't think the story is as good as any Zero Escape game. If you haven't played AI: The Somnium Files, that is an Uchikoshi game that has a great story (still not as good as 999, but really good nonetheless, in my opinion at least).

I think my best worst game is Hello Neighbor, because my kids (five year old son especially) saw it on RUclips and wanted to play, and knowing its reputation I still picked it up and we have a blast playing it. They like just goofing around with it more than seriously playing, and the loose (to say the least) physics just make it a hoot. It may be a rubbish game, but rubbish or not it’s been a lot of fun playing it with them.

I ended up liking this game a lot, but I pretty much agree with Jon. I'd give the first 2/3 of the game like, a 6/10. It wasn't amazing but I was starting to like the characters and enjoy it for what it was: a cute little adventure with enjoyable enough characters. There was one pretty decent twist that caught me off guard but nothing else much in the story department.
That last 1/3 of the game though... holy crap. Twist after twist. It was the final part of the game that was added in the Switch release (and also updated on Apple Arcade the same day). It brought everything together. I had played the entire game in 1 sitting somehow (2pm to 7am lol), and by the time these twists were being thrown at me they were blowing my mind. The last 3rd of the game carried so hard that I raised my score from a 6/10 to an 8/10.
It's a really hard game to actually recommend to people because of the myriad of problems it has in the gameplay department, and especially when I'm really only recommending it for the final 3rd of the game which comes after an underwhelming (albeit somewhat creative) 10 hour long slog that is the first 2/3rds, but damn, if you like the type of stories Kodaka and Uchikoshi tell, it's pretty damn good by the end.

I like the demo, but was aware of what happened after. The graphs are good, but agree that the platforming can be tedious at time.
But my main complain is more on the title, I can think of 4 games on the switch with "World end" in the title:
    - World End Club
    - The World Ends with You
    - Worldend Syndroms
    - Our World is Ended
And there are probably many more :D

I thought the game was an intense disappointment, easily one of my top 10 biggest gaming disappointments ever, and I've been playing games for more than 30 years. From a game design standpoint, the game is beyond dreadful. But even if it was a visual novel, it would just be average. The first segment in the demo, which is indeed very misleading, was the best part of the game. The rest of the game, beyond one or two decent (but predictable) moments, was an absolute drag. The story has some of the most plot convenience devices I've ever seen. Somehow, I still finished it, maybe due to buyer's remorse, but I wouldn't ever recommend it to anyone.
