Brings back some memories, my chickens used to sit on top of the 6 foot gate waiting for it to be opened even though the could leave if they really wanted to. One hen liked to roost about 30 feet up a tree. Funny birds, I will keep chickens again some day.

Depends on the breed of chicken. Lighter breeds can get airborne, but the heavy meat-breeds are usually unable. Hens fly better than roos, because of their structure - a roo's job is to make himself "available" to distract predators from his hens. Even peacocks fly - so the tail isn't a problem - it's weight. Yes, guineas fly - beautiful when they're airborne - try to get film of them close up and slow-mo it! Beautiful wings!

Little Tiny House I have a 4 year old hen who was a great flyer in her teens but gained adult weight and seemed to lose her ability, however once she started living in the tree with the guineafowl she’s become a great flyer again and can fly across all my fields, she’s still the same weight but just a lot fitter! It seems most birds weight isn’t the issue it’s fitness and mental belief in what they can do that determines how well they fly! I live in Worcestershire, England

    Which breed are your chicken?
P.S. last year in Indonesia one day I was on scooter, I entered the parking area of the little resort where I was sleeping, which was surrounded by jungle... One male wild fowl was there, he saw me, and just flew away like a pheasant, disappearing into high trees, still gaining height! It was an amazing sight!
