I think it's sweet, and shows how much Jack has grown since the beginning of the show. Before he met Katherine, he would never have admitted he was scared of anything.
He's not used to being loved or having someone to love and believe in him. These boys were orphans and had to fight for even the most meager wages to survive on. Although I was adverse to changing the original movie version to making the reporter a female and the love interest, it works out so beautifully and she helps give him the courage to lead the Newsies in the strike to get a fair wage, despite her being Pulitzer's daughter. The first time I saw Newsies on the stage after waiting so long for it to come to Hollywood on tour, I was bawling during this song. We all need someone who believes in us. Jack Kelley is a loner in a lot of ways and having her love gave him something to believe in.
