I AM a carpenter by trade and I could come up with some critiques, but ill just say, its totally strong enough, the workmanship is great, its unique and it looks killer! What more could you want! Great job!
@Slippery Storm Why? what exactly can he or anyone say, this is a SUBJECTIVE thing, the guy built it and it functions as he designed it to.. If he was building it for you and you want to critique than by all means there are Literally thousands of ways to make these things the ONLY thing it needs to do is be safe not to come enough while going down the road.. If the guy asks for critique than by all means have at it.. but cmon "A reasonable person" really lol
@@TM-bd7nf professionals will tell you dont do it because you are taking work away from them there is ONE WAY to do ANYTHING, weather its build an engine a topper or house.. The RIGHT WAY and the thing that determines this is safety reliability.. once i build it I dont need someone saying "I would have done this or i would have done that.. I have been doing my own things for 40 plus yrs lol so i guess in not a reasonable person
Critique it for my sake. I love the way it LOOKS but think it could be built better in HIND SIGHT. I'm planning on building one for the top of my utility trailer and this design looks great but I'm stuck on methodology
I never imagined building my own truck cap. Fantastic. You should be proud of your work. I know I’d be sitting in my garage staring at that all day admiring my work if I built it. Great job. Inspirational.
You people whining about weight bother to listen to the young man when he said the topper was around 300 pounds? Most fiberglass toppers are close to 200. That truck will handle it just fine. Excellent job, Ayrton! Nice looking as well as a great place to spend some time in out in the woods.
That's what I was thinking about the weight. I was wondering how the wood frame would hold up from the vibration of driving. This build is perfect for my needs.
Thank you for the support brotha! I show how I lift the camper (by hand and via jacks) in a new video of mine. But I talk about the handling of my truck in my most recent video, cheers!
"I did not heed my father's advise"!!! ????? Yeah! Unfortunately that's the way it goes! Some of our hardest lesson in life, have to be learned the hard way to get the point! Enjoy your build😁
I have a 02 3/4 ton Dodge diesel long bed and I really want to do something like this. Right now I have a extra tall fiberglass canopy but it is made for the 1st gen bed which is a bit different sized than mine. Seal leaks between canopy and truck and I just can't get it to stop no matter the material or how tight my clamps. Next summer I build one similar to yours. Looks great.
I personally think it looks sweet and considering I built mine with a standard height truck cap, I am jealous of your head space. But making and using your own capper is a blast at camp after you personalize the inside for your needs. Kudos
As the son of carpenters and having experience myself the framing of the camper looked good a few more layers of materials than would typically be used. That being said the over all result looks nice especially for someone not used to building with wood. Nice job
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! For a non-carpenter, you're a pretty good one! The ONLY THING that I would recommend is to add some drainage holes on top so H2O doesn't pool up & damage the wood. Great job
Very well done for "not" being a carpenter. I am ...we'll used to be ...old age haha, and I am using many parts of your design. Very well done! Looks incredible!
For not being a carpenter, you have done an excellent job, and given me some ideas. I'm planning to get an older, long-bed pickup, and may make my own top similar to yours. Only problem with this design is that it is very HEAVY. At one time I had an old truck with an aluminum shell, and by propping it up against the back fender, I could lift it up and on the bed by myself. Of course I was 34 then, now I'm twice that age. So I like the hydraulic lift idea.
Well done! I have been using triethylene glycol to protect wood from water. It is one of the least toxic forms of preserving and protecting wood out there. You can stain and paint over it. I but mine from soap making supply companies. It will also stop existing rot. Been using it on bee hives to preserve the wood. That should tell you how safe it is.
Very very creative I love it that's beautiful I wonder if you could do the same thing with metal materials the same way that would be a hell of a video I love it keep up the good work
You did excellent & very professional on that build, GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard to find quality home-made topper video like yours, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad gave me the exact same critique so I respect this. However my tailgate doesn’t have a lock on it so if someone wanted to get in, they could. I try not to keep valuable things in there though
I've been looking for some kind of camper or extended cap to put on a half ton p/u. I've been thinking about building something but this is really the only vid I've seen of someone doing it, you've given me some food for thought, thanks for posting. I'm leaning heavier to the build something.
Very nice. Been thinking of something like this for myself. In a future update it would be nice to know actual weight and build cost. I'd also like to see your process for loading and unloading. I've rarely seen a job that didn't have some small imperfections. Well done and remember, not everyone will like it but you didn't build it for them. Hope you enjoy it for a long time.
Different. Very nicely executed: both the build and the video. Gave a thumbs up. Good luck with your adventures! Other comments (re draining the runoff) I must agree.
Wow, great job, I have been thinking of building the same thing, only I would extend the top to the top of the pickup truck, to give extra storage space.
Looks good. The roof pooling is a legit comment. Live and learn. The top is real unique and nicely built. Got a feeling this won't be the only one build. New ideas and wants will prevail. Where in ca are you roughly?
It’s beautiful bro! I’d recommend to anyone when doing exterior trim, try to always make the TOP horizontal pieces run the full length with the vertical pieces capped off by the top trim, than run the sides all the way down with the bottom trim framed in by the sides... this is for water drainage
Great job buddy!! Never let negitive comments stop you from doing what you do. Most people don't have the drive to create just criticize. Kuddos buddy!!😎👍
Beautiful job, nice looking design. I was going to do this too until I calculated the max gross weight rating on my 1/2 ton truck. Bed payload is pretty minimal. Unfortunately weight is probably an issue, depending on the payload of the truck by the time you finish the inside bed, add gear etc, you may be overloaded.
I AM a carpenter by trade and I could come up with some critiques, but ill just say, its totally strong enough, the workmanship is great, its unique and it looks killer! What more could you want! Great job!
Well said.
When I build my first one, I will absolutely welcome critiques. That is how you learn. By listening to professionals in the trade.

You had stated that you are not a carpenter. This video proves you are a very good carpenter. Excellent build! A+
One of the most attractive and individual campers I've ever seen!
By doing this you will have learnt quite a bit, mostly about yourself.
Good job young man, it's nice to see that the younger generation working on projects like this , thank you for your video !
That's actually one of the best ones I have seen. I'd put it in my list of the top ten.. awesome job.
I never imagined building my own truck cap. Fantastic. You should be proud of your work. I know I’d be sitting in my garage staring at that all day admiring my work if I built it. Great job. Inspirational.
Glad to hear!
I've spent months looking for just this very buildout. It looks great. Bravo!
That is one of the prettiest shells I've ever seen!
That’s pretty badass. Nice MGM Taco. The best part is , it’s the work you put into it and it looks great IMO.
This is my favourite camper shell build! I’ve been getting ideas to build my own and found your video-perfect!!
I’m not a carpenter either but I’m pretty sure mine would look like something the Beverly Hillbillies might travel in! Great job, impressed for sure.

I mention your concerns in my new video
At the end of the day it’s a fucking truck. Trucks are meant to carry shit. lol it’s not like he made it from forged titanium. 😅
Nice job man! Great to see other craftsmen out there still getting it done..
Well i am a carpenter and i think you did a great job and im proud of you.
Thank you, means a lot from someone in your trade.
"I did not heed my father's advise"!!!
????? Yeah! Unfortunately that's the way it goes! Some of our hardest lesson in life, have to be learned the hard way to get the point!
Enjoy your build😁
Looks so cozy. I love that strained shiplap

Saw a video where someone used a garage door bottom seal between the cap and rails. Seemed like reasonable solution to me.
I personally think it looks sweet and considering I built mine with a standard height truck cap, I am jealous of your head space. But making and using your own capper is a blast at camp after you personalize the inside for your needs. Kudos
Fantastic work. Any one would be proud to claim that job. Good work. Don't let anyone sell your skills short.
Awesome build! A small security thing to think about is your hinges at the top of the door could be unscrewed quickly.
As the son of carpenters and having experience myself the framing of the camper looked good a few more layers of materials than would typically be used. That being said the over all result looks nice especially for someone not used to building with wood. Nice job
Thank you for the insight, much appreciated!
Amazing. Great explanations and direct to the point. Tasteful choice of color and material.
A good simple design. Thanks for doing that. I am just starting to investigate the possibilities of building my own topper. Excellent job!
Best of luck sir! Possibilities are dependent on your desires
Fabulous truck topper man! Great water proofing, wood working and hardware choices! Y’all are Very talented
Considering the cost of a truck campers has gone crazy this is a pretty cost effective way to stay cozy when your camping . Nicely done
Yes, they are thousands of dollars for materials that look like they cost a few hundred.
fantastic job for winging it. very well thought out.
I love watching diy truck toppers!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! For a non-carpenter, you're a pretty good one! The ONLY THING that I would recommend is to add some drainage holes on top so H2O doesn't pool up & damage the wood. Great job
Thank you, I had done this but forgot to mention it, however it’s shown in my new video. Cheers!
Good job. Im a carpenter bye trade. You inspired me to do one myself for my truck. I love the burn interior. Great job again.
Thank you, I accomplished what I set out to do then! Best of luck!
I dig it. I personally wouldn’t throw it on my truck but I really appreciate the creativity! Great job!
That is beautiful, well thought out and still very lightweight...if it ever gets leaky from expansion mebbe you could fiberglass it over...
Nice work. It looks great. Yes you are a Carpenter 👍
I think you did a great job! Especially given that this is your 1st camper build.
Very well done for "not" being a carpenter. I am ...we'll used to be ...old age haha, and I am using many parts of your design. Very well done! Looks incredible!
You did a great job on the camper and the video! Really great!!!

I talk about the weight in my new video and show how I lift it in another video comping soon, not too bad. Best of luck on your build!
@@fathertime241 Thanks! Looking forward to seeing that. Subscribed.
Good job ! I liked the burned look on the inside before it was finished ,wonder how that would have look throughout :)
Awesome build love how it looks on your Tacoma
That is pretty dope man. I really like that. I just may make my own topper now instead of buying a new one that is already build for my truck.
that is a beautiful topper! well done.
Very nice build! Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
BADASS! Nice Job ~ Very unique!
Outstanding and beautiful build, great job!
Well done! I have been using triethylene glycol to protect wood from water. It is one of the least toxic forms of preserving and protecting wood out there. You can stain and paint over it. Great idea! I’ll look into it
Great idea! I’ll look into it
sweet build! can see the time and effort put it...
Did I hear Riders on the Storm by The Doors playing in the background....great song from a great band...oh and btw nice build for "not a carpenter"
Very very creative I love it that's beautiful I wonder if you could do the same thing with metal materials the same way that would be a hell of a video I love it keep up the good work
Absolutely beautiful job. It looks great.
Your build looks awesome! I want to do something very similar on my 1961 Chevrolet Apache’s bed. Thank You for sharing your video!
I can tell you put a lot of thought into this project. Thanks for the video.
very nice. you should post up another video showing your camping setup when you're out on a trip some time.
Great minds think alike sir! Just posted a new video and will definitely add some of my trips, cheers!
You did excellent & very professional on that build, GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard to find quality home-made topper video like yours, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks awesome! Only critique is the fasteners for the hinges are on the outside. Easy to break into.
My dad gave me the exact same critique so I respect this. However my tailgate doesn’t have a lock on it so if someone wanted to get in, they could. I try not to keep valuable things in there though

Great job the camper shell looks awesome great video 👍😎🙏

I talk more about this in my new videos
I have found that not heeding my father's advice has always led to a significant part of my learning as well, ha-ha!
Different. Very nicely executed: both the build and the video. Gave a thumbs up. Good luck with your adventures! Other comments (re draining the runoff) I must agree.
I address this in my new video but thank you!
Cool!! Nice first build.. good job dude
Looks great...you did a nice job !
HEY. Great job. Thanks for sharing your idea.
Came out really nice looking on the outside... 👍👍
Excellent build
Only one word to describe fantastic well done 😊
Really like the build. Going to do something similar in a smaller scale. Length and height. Thanks for the vid. Very helpful!
I love it looks great I would put that on my Tacoma. Cool camper. Great job 👏
Damn dude, solid build! Would love to build something like this for my rig
Very nice job and seeing the room inside makes me wish I hadn't baught a fiberglass shell for my Colorado this is really cool bud!
Never too late to start your own build and sell the glass once it’s complete
Wow, great job, I have been thinking of building the same thing, only I would extend the top to the top of the pickup truck, to give extra storage space.
Great idea, but wasn’t a design I was looking for
I’m posting a video about how I utilize storage space though
Nice looking camper.
Very cool idea and nice work!
Looks fab. Well done.
Very creative. Nice job
This is so kool, great job!
You make it look so simple.
Looks good. The roof pooling is a legit comment. Live and learn. The top is real unique and nicely built. Got a feeling this won't be the only one build. New ideas and wants will prevail. Where in ca are you roughly?
I talk address this topic in my new video
Wow !!!! That’s beautiful!!
Dude this thing is rad!!!!
You might not be a carpenter....in the UK a joiner. But you did pretty good buddy. Nice job.
Love the background music. THE DOORS!!!!
It’s beautiful bro! I’d recommend to anyone when doing exterior trim, try to always make the TOP horizontal pieces run the full length with the vertical pieces capped off by the top trim, than run the sides all the way down with the bottom trim framed in by the sides... this is for water drainage

Thank you homie I’m building a custom truck bed camper top right now myself and that is something I had no idea about
Nice job ... I just finished mine in my Ram ..
Great job buddy!! Never let negitive comments stop you from doing what you do. Most people don't have the drive to create just criticize. Kuddos buddy!!😎👍
Nice work. Cool music.
Nice 👌 job bud like it very much keep it up I like to see more 👍
Good job, Ayrton!
Your topper is professional and far better than those ugly DIY's on youtube.
looks great, but does that roof pool water when it rains ??? looks awesome tho
Thank you! And no, I show this in my new video
Thank you so much for this video. It will help me greatly with my first build. ❤
Looks good bro nice job .

I talk about this in my new video, but the sumo springs really help
It looks really nice!
Well done. I see bikes and a can of VP in the background. 😎
Nice catch brotha
Really nice job; your video steps are excellent and are easy to follow when others want to build theirs. Have a great day:-)
I like it and it is functional and looks great.
Very nice job.
Looks great , I like it .
Very nice
Beautiful work
