I've never been a huge fan of Twisted Sister, not my kind of music. Tool, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Rage Against the Machine, that's more my thing. That said, I can't help but like Dee Snider. He's so awesome, and in this moment, he was the embodiment of Rock and Roll and Heavy Metal. Even though I was never rocking out front row at a Sister show, he represented all of us outcasts and outsiders perfectly that day. Thanks, Dee. Freedom of Speech is grateful. Hell, freedom is grateful.
Back then my school had an assembly about this, they brought in some guy with a slide show of various album covers. I especially remember the dude pointing out signs of devil worship on the Eagles Hotel California album cover and playing some records for us backwards to hear stuff, lol! My brother and I went home and told our mom, and she laughed right along with us. Good times.
The great irony is that if Tipper Gore and Nancy Reagan had wanted to prevent teenagers from listening to metal, all they needed to have said was that Metal was their favourite kind of music....teenagers would immediately stopped listening...
You've got a point. I'm reminded of a storyline in a cartoon where the kids were dressing like punk rockers at school. The principal had himself and his faculty dress like the kids! Immediately the kids ditched their punk rocker garb and dressed normally!
"You may take our lives...but you can never take....OUR FREEDOM !!" Beautiful, Dee ! You showed intelligence and stated the truth - it is a parent's job to monitor what their kids see, hear, and play - and NO ONE ELSE'S! That's God Damn right !
I got a 97% when I did my term paper on this. My English teacher, a hard rocker, said that from my term paper she can see that I'm "very passionate about it." I smiled..
I am an ordained minister, and I, personally, have ALWAYS liked the music of Dee Snider and his band, Twisted Sister. Furthermore, the politicians at that hearing are all hypocrites of the highest order!!!
Amazing! I love Dee and Twisted Sister. I’m 42 so was too young to have seen them live in the 80s BUT their songs hit me hard when I was a teen in the 90s. “I Am (I’m Me)” is my favorite!
I think on this day, it didn't matter if you liked hair metal, thrash metal, or whatever metal...it just mattered that the first amendment and the beauty of free art and music was allowed to stand up against unfair oppression...
Wow he nails this! So gratifying to see this... I come across it in my wandering every decade or so and every time I see it I am thoroughly impressed. Great job Dee!
This was far from the only time. There were MANY rock stars made to testify in front of congress. Frank Zappa and John Denver had to for this very reason, Metallica did for Copyright law, and others have for varying things. I would assume that others have had to fight censorship as well.....actors, writers, television presenters etc.
My sons heard Zappa, Sabbath, and Deep Purple and much more in the cradle, while growing up. They heard it often, heard it LOUD. Now they are 16 and 19 years old, Two more balanced men I've yet to meet ....
"We're not going to take it" was our theme song at Tech School in the mid 80's. Things started to get a little out of hand one day so we all left early, walked down to the nearest watering hole. When this song came on we all looked at each other and knew we had us a song for the class of 84. Loved it than still love it now.
I remember when this happened, and reading about it in Circus magazine. This is the first time I have seen the full CSPAN Tapes before. Shanks for sharing..
This man is the reason why we can listen to Music TODAY, he is the reason you have rap music. PRMC wanted to make amongst all things, all songs to be no longer than 3 minutes long as well, seriously, I wouldnt have TOOL without this guy. I love him.
on one of the other John Denver hearing somebody said that Zappa was the brains and then they stopped ,So I thought I would finish what they were thinking FZ was the brains ,Denver was the compassion and Snider was the muscles.
Dee Snider had a really good point, PMRC's only valid point was that is parents job to monitor music and tv etc and up those parents what they want their kids to listen to, this was in the 80's and rock music got alot of backlash, 2013 we have the Miley Cyrus's and Lindsay Lohans influence to worry about...and they thought rock music was bad? please I would sooner turn on a rock song sooner then have my son or future kids see the stunts pulled by so called teeny boppers
It is within acceptable limits to prepare a statement, especially with the volume & expansive content of what he came to discuss. He had a very important opportunity to represent so many & a prepared statement allowed him to avoid neglect of any important area of info, allowing him to give the best possible presentation. Plus, no matter WHO you are, this is a senate hearing. The most intelligent soul on earth would be nervous there. Even once he was "off card" he was amazing.
They invited him to testify at the state because they thought he looked like a freak and would act like a drug burn out; they got just the opposite. I WANNA ROCK 🎸 🎸 🎸
When someone shows me Lady Gaga in glasses on Larry King show - trying to make a statement. I show them this video - where its original (comparing to Gaga), its rebellious, its intelligent, its unique. SOmething that none of GAGA Promotions PR people will never get.
PMRC: *This will be easy.*
Dee Snider: *Swing Swong You Are Wrong.*
hippity hoppity your virginity is now my property
Dee just 80s style served the senate. Very epic

Sounds like that guy didn't have all his eggs in one basket!
this is the most harmless band ever. twisted sister rules
This was without a doubt the coolest thing ever to happen in metal. Makes you proud to love this music.
If he was being interviewed by CNN there would be technical difficulties.
@Sub Fascism is a far right wing ideology. Why are Conservatives such Goobers?
@Sub Oh? How many years ago? Who debunked it?
This was about the time they started that bs...look at us now.

The thing is, as a teenager I looked for the PRMC label because it made me curious to hear certain bands, I think it helped to sell more records :)

Well said, Dee! Completely incredible! These poor people at the PMRC were probobaly like "Why, oh why did we have to ask this guy come and testify?!"
This man is the reason we can still listen to metal music the same way \m/

Ironic that the rock star had to fight back against Congress on censorship in 1984 or all years
This was far from the only time. There were MANY rock stars made to testify in front of congress.
