they completely underestimated him! they invited him because they thought he would just be another dumb rocker who would just enforce his stereotype and make their case more solid. they were dead wrong.
Oh if only these hypocrites would see into the future. They tried to dismantle Dee and even wanted to present him as an incapable parent and husband because of what he does for a living. Years later Dee is still married to his beautiful wife and had 4 good-looking children who are successful artists Al Gore and his wife Tippy are now separated and has a son abusing drugs. Oh the irony indeed
So true. I just watched these hearings the other night. They tried to belittle him, and he didn't respond to them. They didn't know what they were getting into, when they invited him. He was better than them. This is the parent's job.
Thing is, we don't need the PMRC and never did. When I was 11, my mum sat in the record store for 3/4 of an hour and listened to almost an entire Eminem album before she made the decision I was too young to buy it. When I was 12, she got me to print Green Day lyrics of the internet and went right through them before deciding I could have the CD. When I got a Shakira CD when I was 7, she went through the lyrics booklet. Parents don't need the government telling them what is and isn't suitable.
You're trolling right? I'm a Libertarian, not a Republican but as far as the 1st Amendment and Freedom of Speech goes, both "sides" are bad but the "Left" is far more authoritarian. Censorship, "Hate-speech" laws, compelled speech, thought-crimes, getting fired/de-platformed/banned/expelled for thinking/saying the wrong words. Those are "Libral/Democratic" crusades. Also pretty certain Al Gore, as well as most of the people Dee is talking to in these videos are Democrats.
Man, how the times have changed, I recently bought like 4 brand new CDs from the local "Barnes & Noble" and all of them have skips and scratches, and they refused to take them back. WTF? Lol
Senator Ernest Hollings sounded exactly like Foghorn Leghorn, I kept expecting to say "I said, I said, listen up here boy!" Hard to keep a straight face when he talks. Dee Snider did a great job here, he was the smartest guy in the room.
4:40 "MTV have done a fair job in keepin' profanity, obscenity and things like that off the public airwaves"... God I miss the '80s... Check the today M(oron)TV!
They brought Dee Snider into make a clown of him and Dee completely flipped the table on them in one of the most badass testimonies that could have been conceived
since the start of music there where people that shout about doom and all kinds of shit that will happen, look at the fourties and the fifties even Elvis had his share of this. still in this time and age there are groups that have this type of BS.
Dee never claimed AC/DC was glorifying Hell, just that they've made numerous mentions of it in their albums. What he did say was that he was a Christian, and he didn't especially want to wind up there. The point was that he wasn't about to quit listening just because they say 'H-E-Double-Hockey-Stick.'
parents dont want to give up 30 minutes of their time, listen to an album and judge its content prior to letting their child listen to it. they are happy for the PMRC to judge it for them and accept it whether it is right or wrong
@pilotamurorei Actually he was referenced because his Seven Words routine was played on the radio and some guy and his kid heard it and they brought it to court over indecency. It was similar to this case so he mentioned it.
Just listening to that senator, really makes me realize just how ignorant and stupid people are and how badly big brother wants to push his nose into everyone's life.
He should know that when hell and damnation are mentioned on AC/DC songs it is usually used as a metaphor, not to glorify hell itself; that was the stupid part of his intervention.
Starting at around 2:00...lovely statement by the senator asserting the right to use the FCC in limiting what's publicly broadcast. The catch is that 1) the FCC has no right to limit what ius not broadcast and this was about published ( not just broadcast ) music and 2) the FCC's "right" to protect people in the home is unnecessary BS because they can turn the frakking channel or turn off the TV/radio and read a book.
@LynxOGrady I think it had a lot to do with Power over..and being in control with...eventually. This was about 30 years ago. If the PMRC would have it their way, they would have set another step closer to decide what the kids of US were going to listen to. Controled by Media....sounds a bit familiar now 30 years later.......
I research swear words in my career of cognitive psychology. When you censor ANYTHING, you actually provide greater emphasis to be placed upon the material. These guys are actually making the perceived 'problem' worse by calling attention to it.
@ejshaff yup. good for him. as a heavy metal musician and lyricist myself, i take serious offense to anyone telling me what i can and cannot say or play in my music. i am the sole songwriter for my band, so it is my job to defend what i do. i gladly carry the flag into battle for metal!
Now watch, next thing you know, we're going o see Andy Biersack or Danny Worsnop having to go to one of these with a testimony because the parents/committees are too lazy to try to understand the screamed lyrics and try to completely ban them even though they already do indeed use the "Parental Advisory" symbol on their albums if needed.
I completely agree with what Dee is saying. That being said, I'm not sure how he could defend letting his son listen to Stay Hungry simply based on the cover
I want to know how many parents really care about the music their children listen to, mine certainly dont, they may not like the music themselves, but that doesnt differ their decision to let me listen to it
Thank fuck in the 21st century there are so many mediums in which to distribute music. Should any artist worry about whether or not they get played on the radio these days, it's not an issue. For example if my music is unavailable on the radio I'm not even shunted, due to things such as youtube/spotify/iTunes/etc.
Pearl Jam lyric: "take my fucking hand it was their idea, i proved to be a man will myself to find a home, a home within myself we will find a way, we will find our place drop the leash, drop the leash... get outta' my fuckin' face"

in truth kids seek out the label. the more explicit, the better mostly implying to video games, if the label weren't there it wouldn't attract, forbidden fruit
Esperaron tratar con un ignorante y se toparon con un tipo que domina a la perfección las reglas de la lengua inglesa, que argumenta con bases y que les dió una lección sobre la libertad de expresión.
He should have asked for show of hands of those wholesome senators also didnt drink, smoke or do drugs..or were christians who never cursed...lol..they shame only themselves
if my mum seen half the album artwork from my bands i think she would shoot me xD...i listen to some pretty fucking dark shit but ima very normal person :)
they completely underestimated him! they invited him because they thought he would just be another dumb rocker who would just enforce his stereotype and make their case more solid.
they were dead wrong.
and they thought john denver was just some folksy middle america singer who would agree with them. wrong again!
Oh if only these hypocrites would see into the future. They tried to dismantle Dee and even wanted to present him as an incapable parent and husband because of what he does for a living.

"Are you going to tell me you're a big fan of my music as well?"
Dee definitely saw through that old politicians trick.
I remember watching this and cheering for Dee. ❤️ He had a huge impact on music and censorship in the 80’s. Bless that man.
Dee Snider looks better without the angry clown face
I lol at the fact that when they put parental warnings on albums, it completely backfired and those albums sold more.
Thing is, we don't need the PMRC and never did. 1:10 "I know that AC/DC, one of my favorite bands sings a lot of songs glorifying hell and damnation" - Dee Snider.
Love the fact the snider keeps telling them to do their job as a parent
he is a very smart and articulate dude...i resepct that..great hair too.
"first amendment absolutism" - imagine a republican saying that today
Good observation. There has been a massive shift in how each party interprets free speech.
More like a Democrat
@@danielmoore9209 Imagine unironically believing that shit you just wrote.
@@danielmoore9209 Right wing babble. This is precisely what Conservative politics produces.

pretty certain Al Gore, as well as most of the people Dee is talking to in these videos are Democrats.
Go Daddy Dee! Through this whole hearing, he's surrounded by people who would love to see him fail . . . . . . but all he does is win in their faces!
No doubt. Zappa and Denver were great too, defending the right for Free Speech; these 3 guys were at their best.
Man, how the times have changed, I recently bought like 4 brand new CDs from the local "Barnes & Noble" and all of them have skips and scratches, and they refused to take them back.
WTF?
Lol
I love how Dee Snyder referenced The Time's Ice Cream Castles album!
greetings from Chile; honestly, this is history.
Wow, it's not very often you get to see an actual visual representation of an ass-whooping in the Senate. Dee Snider for president!
"sick mother fucking fans of twisted sister" he said that so straightforwardly. like a boss
3:29 - 3:40 Good thing axl wasn't there. He woulda killed that cameraman
"There's two noobs on a radio. One off them is the volume and the other one.....changes the freakin' channel!!!" - George Carlin
....makes me reminisce about "retail" stores.....wow!
One of the high points of these hearings was @ 5:34.
Senator Ernest Hollings sounded exactly like Foghorn Leghorn, I kept expecting to say "I said, I said, listen up here boy!" Hard to keep a straight face when he talks. Dee Snider did a great job here, he was the smartest guy in the room.
Good fucking god this is gold.

He just says it right. It is the parents responsability!!!
I would love to see this argued today

3:15 "..presented over the ayyyyer-waaaaaves.." LOL, cheers to pure american accents.
Pure Foghorn Leghorn
Al...OWNED!
I love this so much.
Dee rocks!
Good to know that parents were trying to abdicate responsibility even back then.
3:34 Guy sounds just like Foghorn Leghorn!
Dee never claimed AC/DC was glorifying Hell, just that they've made numerous mentions of it in their albums. What he did say was that he was a Christian, and he didn't especially want to wind up there. The point was that he wasn't about to quit listening just because they say 'H-E-Double-Hockey-Stick.'
and this should be made into a movie
Gore: What does SMF stand for.... hahahaa
Only three words can describes this. ABSOLUTE FUCKING MASSACRE! Well done Dee the S.M.F's will always back you up
parents dont want to give up 30 minutes of their time, listen to an album and judge its content prior to letting their child listen to it.
they are happy for the PMRC to judge it for them and accept it whether it is right or wrong
like dee said if it really concerns them that much maybe they should
@pilotamurorei Actually he was referenced because his Seven Words routine was played on the radio and some guy and his kid heard it and they brought it to court over indecency. It was similar to this case so he mentioned it.
Just listening to that senator, really makes me realize just how ignorant and stupid people are and how badly big brother wants to push his nose into everyone's life.
@gendrpepper Ernest Hollings... also famous for the "Beaver and Buffcoat" line... lol
He should know that when hell and damnation are mentioned on AC/DC songs it is usually used as a metaphor, not to glorify hell itself; that was the stupid part of his intervention.
4:56 The Family Hour The Senator was Referring to was actually Found to be Unconstitutional

you have to admit they bounced back from his slaughter of them very well.
And yet today there isn't a TV show that doesn't use every curse word just for good measure.

Dee talks about real stuff for a living. The suits talk out of their ass for a living.
Think about it.
@LynxOGrady yup. you nailed it.
Hmmm...maybe he didn't get the memo about that new-fangled invention - the channel changer!
@ejshaff yup. good for him. as a heavy metal musician and lyricist myself, i take serious offense to anyone telling me what i can and cannot say or play in my music. i am the sole songwriter for my band, so it is my job to defend what i do. i gladly carry the flag into battle for metal!

that congressman sounds like boomhauer off of king of the hill

I completely agree with what Dee is saying. That being said, I'm not sure how he could defend letting his son listen to Stay Hungry simply based on the cover
Yeah. I love it that he said the words "Mother fucking" right there in a public hearing in the Capitol.
Al Bore asked for it and got it!
The Time!
Okay, I stand corrected. But he still made a valid point.
I am a SMF Friend of Twisted Sister.
i wonder how this would have gone if bands like cannibal corpse, dimmu borgir, and dark funeral were on the stand haha
like Dee Snider
I want to know how many parents really care about the music their children listen to, mine certainly dont, they may not like the music themselves, but that doesnt differ their decision to let me listen to it

4 letter words......educate me. He could've made them say them but he took the higher ground!
Funny how they quote George Carlin's seven words when it has nothing to do with this situation lol
