The boys are all dressed up as characters from a British Soap Opera called Coronation Street. Dressing in drag was the suggestion of Roger's girlfriend at the time. The song is about women wanting to break out of their stereotypical roles but not wanting to give up everything they have in their lives.

Well, it's sort of based on a soap kind of like Coronation Street with the beginning etc but they're not dressed as any actual characters from it.

Freddie was the most incredible singer. John Deacon the bass player wrote this song about women in domestic violence situations. The whole band wrote hit songs. Try Deacon’s Spread Your Wings, Your my Best Friend, Friends will be Friends, Back Chat, Under Pressure, and his collaboration with Freddie on Cool Cat in which John played the instruments. Such an eclectic, magical group! Check out Save Me and Dragon Attack live Montreal 1981.

The song and video has NOTHING to do with Freddie's sexuality. Was written by John Deacon (gramma) about women's liberation movement and it was Roger's girlfriend's idea to dress them up in drag. The video was a parody of the characters from Coronation Street ( British Soap Opera)

All the band were in the first sequence. Can you guess which they are? The dancers were the Royal Ballet. Freddie was very fond of ballet, and especially opera. You really really should watch Barcelona. You won't be sorry. Surprised, maybe, but not sorry. Also, You Take My Breath Away. Sublime. You are going to have so much fun. Enjoy.

My fav song from the band's 11th studio album: The Works from 1984 and this is obviously one of if not my fav official video lol....the whole band was dressed in drag here lol....
Queen's bassist, John Deacon (the angry grandma lol) wrote this song, and it was, I think, either Queen's drummer Roger Taylor's idea to dress in drag (he is the high school girl look alike that is blonde and is cleaning the dishes on the kitchen) or Roger's girlfriend at the moment idea lol, either way, love this video so much!!! I think they are kinda like making a parody of a british tv show called: coronation street....
And honestly, I never knew what was the meaning of the song...I just love it so much haha!!
Pd: I'll keep recommending you to react to In The Lap Of The Gods (Live At The Rainbow 1974) and I also recommend you two hidden Queen jewels that are: '39 (Written and sang by Brian May, Queen's guitarist) and Rock It (written and sang by Roger Taylor, Queen's drummer) these two are great songs, also I recommend you a Queen song that it's litearlly called Death On Two Legs (Dedicated to...) cos is great, and one of the best kinda payback/revengefull songs, I have ever heard in my life lol...in my opinion, is a must listen type of song!!

This song plus, in particular, this video, caused the Bible Belt States in the US to call for Queen to be banned from the radio stations. It caused so much trouble that it was one of the main reasons Queen decided to concentrate on Europe and South America for a while where they perfected their "Stadium" performances to regular audiences of 80,000. Plus performed outdoor concerts to 200,000 people at a time. Close to 600,000 at one 3 day concert! When they returned to England Queen thought that they had been forgotten, no longer "cool" and the music world had moved on.
They weren't even on the initial list of performances for Live Aid but decided that, if they performed, they would use all their experience to "win" the audience. So, they had a 20 min play time, same as all the bands but spent a week rehearsing to the second to make full use of their time. That's why none of the songs they played were the full song. They cut them down to fit in as many as possible.
As we know, they "stole" the Live Aid concert and were outstanding.

My advice for the new generation, which are a couple of generations younger than myself, don't get stuck on Freddie, he was in his own words the lead singer of the group of four very talented people who all wrote very different songs for Queen, and themselves on solo albums. I would forget Fred happened to be gay or what he was diagnosed with in 1987, I can honestly say only a very few songs in the final period of his life were anything which could be construed that they are possibly about his or anyone else's illness, which were actually written by all four and credited as this in the two last albums and the one in 1995, even Only The Good Die Young, isn't all about Fred, that's how it started, but then Diana Princess Of Wales died in a car accident and fashion designer murdered outside his home, both of whom Fred and I think the whole group knew, so I would clear your mind of gay, HIV and just enjoy it for what it is, written by Freddie Mercury, Dr Sir Brian May ( recently knighted, Dr of astrophysicist) Roger Taylor and John Deacon
I have no doubt I'll receive comments for being harsh, but I'm old enough too remember when this and many others started out over 50 years ago, we didn't think this must mean this and that, we listened because we enjoyed it for what it is music with a story behind it and I don't mean about themselves, lyrics you can understand, music which actually sounds like music with no autotune, no earpieces, just pure hard work and talent

First of all, Freddie did not write this song. Queen bassist, John Deacon wrote this song. It is about a person who is in a toxic relationship. They are in love with a person that is mistreating and cruel to them and they realize that they need to break free even though they still love this person.

@@MissMac- According to John, who wrote the song, it was an anthem to the Women's movement. The tale is about a woman who was in love with a man who abuse her and her struggle to break free of his grip on her.

Thanks Risby - but you are totally wrong... see comments below - Freddie didn't write it, and it wasn't even his idea to do the "drag" - that's much more common in Britain, and it was based on an English Soap Opera called "Coronation Street" - and I hope you noticed that the entire BAND were in drag - maybe Roger was too cute? lol

Freddie wrote the most with Brian writting only about 6 less than himn they were the main writters
their songs made most of the tracks in concert
Brians best known now is rock you
Freddies Bo Rap and DSMN (champions?)
I'd have to re check but I think Roger wrote just over 20 with Ga Ga being his most well known now
      John wrote about 12
but he has best friend, brake free and AOBTD which are all still well known now outside of Queen fans used in tv and ads..
so considering he didnt like writting and his style wasnt liked by Roger and Brian is a great achievemnt and huge credit to him to have songs that are still relevent and liked
