Who needs awards or an 'ok' from her peers? Certainly not Marianne Faithfull. She lived her art and gave us the gift of this song. And many more. I adore her.
I just really listened to the lyrics for the first time. For the last 25 years I thought this song was about a bored housewife who has her little fantasy about being whisked off to Paris by a handsome man in his sports car, but ultimately although her husband and kids have their faults and her life isn’t perfect, she loves them unconditionally and wouldn’t change anything for the world. I almost recommended this my friend, because it reminds me of her for some reason. I’m glad I didn’t say that, I think she’s never speak to me again!
My Aunt Sue is tall, thin, has jet black long hair, and is dutch. A stunning queen. She showed me this song a year ago and I cannot express in words how much it means to me. Thank you aunt Sue! Fav song ever.
The morning sun touched lightly on The eyes of Lucy Jordan In a white suburban bedroom In a white suburban town As she lay there 'neath the covers Dreaming of a thousand lovers 'Till the world turned to orange And the room went spinning round At the age of thirty-seven She realised she'd never Ride through Paris in a sports car With the warm wind in her hair So she let the phone keep ringing And she sat there softly singing Little nursery rhymes she'd memorised In her daddy's easy chair Her husband, he's off to work And the kids are off to school And there were, oh, so many ways For her to spend the day She could clean the house for hours Or rearrange the flowers Or run naked through the shady street Screaming all the way At the age of thirty-seven She realised she'd never Ride through Paris in a sports car With the warm wind in her hair So she let the phone keep ringing As she sat there softly singing Pretty nursery rhymes she'd memorised In her daddy's easy chair The evening sun touched gently on The eyes of Lucy Jordan On the roof top where she climbed When all the laughter grew too loud And she bowed and curtsied to the man Who reached and offered her his hand And he led her down to the long white car That waited past the crowd At the age of thirty-seven She knew she'd found forever As she rode along through Paris With the warm wind in her hair
Very underrated for her time. A lovely " off the norm " voice. Then those wowser eyes and gorgeous smile come along to zap you again... My teenage years were filled by Marianne and a few like her. Nancy Sinatra, Susan Maughan but I run out of names. A proper star who was'nt a star but should have been. Luv her....

Marianne and The Ballad of Lucy Jordan, a classic forever. Supremacy of the finest!
The 1970s. What a fantastic decade, musically. Marianne emerged from her heroin hibernation with a masterpiece like this. The best cover in history.

Praise God for her recovery, and that we will come through this crisis to "broad sunlit uplands" as Churchill said in 1940; up yours, coronavirus.
Thanks for the good news!

Diese Stimme ist einfach nur der Hammer...
The morning sun touched lightly on
The eyes of Lucy Jordan
In a white suburban bedroom
In a white suburban town
As she lay there 'neath the covers
Dreaming of a thousand lovers
'Till the world turned to orange
And the room went spinning round
At the age of thirty-seven
She realised she'd never
Ride through Paris in a sports car
With the warm wind in her hair
So she let the phone keep ringing
And she sat there softly singing
Little nursery rhymes she'd memorised
In her daddy's easy chair
Her husband, he's off to work
And the kids are off to school
And there were, oh, so many ways
For her to spend the day
She could clean the house for hours
Or rearrange the flowers
Or run naked through the shady street
Screaming all the way
At the age of thirty-seven
She realised she'd never
Ride through Paris in a sports car
With the warm wind in her hair
So she let the phone keep ringing
As she sat there softly singing
Pretty nursery rhymes she'd memorised
In her daddy's easy chair
The evening sun touched gently on
The eyes of Lucy Jordan
On the roof top where she climbed
When all the laughter grew too loud
And she bowed and curtsied to the man
Who reached and offered her his hand
And he led her down to the long white car
That waited past the crowd
At the age of thirty-seven
She knew she'd found forever
As she rode along through Paris
With the warm wind in her hair
