    Monica didn’t just meet Carol one time. She grew up with Carol as her godmother helping Maria raise her, until Carol was presumed dead. Carol was gone for 6 years and Monica was 11 when she came back and still had memories of her.

    I agree with you a lot. I loved this movie. I love when stuff comes together. Someone told me "Yeah it brought two tv shows to the movies" but I'm like it also mixed the jump points from Guardians, and the incursions from Doctor Strange. It was certainly not the best but it was also not the worst. Typically I appreciate movies more when we realize where they go. I remember when Age of Ultron was lambasted, but after Infinity War, it was regarded as a great stepping stone, so who knows where this will go, but at least it brought stuff together which was sorely lacking in all of phase four.

    • @MattMurrellReacts
      @MattMurrellReacts  5 месяцев назад +2

      I'm glad you loved the movie! And yeah you're right, it does bring a lot of those things together.
      It's interesting that you bring up Age of Ultron because I do think that the priority of recent Marvel movies/TV is to establish the rules of the multiverse (incursions, variants, etc.), much like how AoU set up the rest of the Infinity Saga. After Secret Wars comes out, I wonder if people will look back at phase four a little more fondly

    I know a lot of people dislike the singing planet but I view it the same way I view the flesh place in guardians vol 3. Just an alien world or place being explored as a side mission. I kinda liked it. I know many said it felt out of place or like it didn't impact much of the rest of the film or like a disney princess film interrupted a marvel film but for me it was fine. It is kinda weird tho we don't as an audience know if those people on that planet are okay. The 300 year old guy with fury says all the planets are okay but we don't see them at the end. I hope they have enough water left i guess

    • @MattMurrellReacts
      @MattMurrellReacts  5 месяцев назад +1

      That's a good comparison, although I would argue that the flesh planet from GOTG 3 serves the characters much better (conflict between Quill & Gamora, Drax not being taken seriously, and more I'm probably forgetting) than the singing planet does for any of these characters. It's definitely a fun side mission-y world though! I just wish there was more there that had me emotionally invested

  • @TheDCbiz

    I kinda like how many issues this film and secret invasion have because when watched, they pres my both carol and fury as villains ironically. Like the few "successful" mcu villains. I don't think it's intentional but kinda interesting. Such as carol and Monica with the skull memory devices. Carol says she didn't mean to make Monica relive her mom dying and slipping back but the way the scene is written and edited and filmed, IT FEELS like Carol completely overpowered Monica's will and forced her to relive that moment just to be noisy and find out what Monica went through. It does feel like Carol had the experience with the devices and was somehow in charge of their collective memories with the rewinding and what not.
    Also the fact Carol and to be fair Monica had Kamala, a teen hukan girl fight kree soldiers on the water planet while telling her not to use her powers feels so irresponsible. I know the price gave Kamala a sash but shouldn't she have been hiding or back home with her parents and told to not use her powers?
    Or fury clearly having the Khan family under questionable legal surveillance.
    Carol abandoning skrulls to die on the skull colony, fury telling the Khan family Kamala has to fight violent aliens with Carol just cuz, fury and the skrulls and his lack thereof. Even imo one of the best scenes with the flerkens is portrayed like a horror event for most of the crew members while for fury it's just all in a days work lol. Even Carol having spent almost 30 years in space and never bothering to help hala reignite their sun and also never finding a home for skrulls. It feels like she was kinda just living it up being a princess on a singing planet instead of helping skrulls, hala have resources, or helping earth

    • @MattMurrellReacts
      @MattMurrellReacts  5 месяцев назад +1

      Wow, I love this take! All great points and I completely agree with you. I definitely thought Carol was controlling the memory device until they threw in that "It wasn't on purpose" line.
      Also, it's not a great look that Carol sent a planet into a drought while being a princess on a planet that is mostly water, haha! I do think there's a story for Captain Marvel about how she is so powerful and can destroy a planet with ease, but she has to live with the weight of those decisions. That idea was present here but wasn't explored too deeply.
      And I like to think that "Let the flerkens eat you" intercom was a pre-recorded message that they've had to play many times 😂

      @@TheIcemanthomas I feel it's all not intentional so I don't focus on it but it is hilarious to see the implied evil or darker elements to mcu fury anr mcu Carol. In a dark humor kind of way. Like why is Kamala fighting violent aliens with no powers? Please take that girl back home to her parents lol. It's just interesting. Thanos dies and so many mcu villains but from pov of skrulls, Khan parents, kree, etc Carol and fury are the real villains. Lol. I feel it's by accident too like the writers didn't mean to make it seem this way

    • @TheDCbiz
      @TheDCbiz 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@MattMurrellReacts so true Lol. Carol says she didn't do the memory thing on purpose but just the way it's filmed and edited it feels like she lied to Monica and was actually the one controlling the memory devices. And so true about the water planet. It's kinda what happened with Tony in the mcu. By accident he comes off as a well meaning but accidental Gillian especially with Ultron so it's kinda funny in a dark humor way. I don't think any of it is on purpose so I don't fault the film for it or stop seeing them as heroes just an interesting pov for gose characters lol

    This definitely isn’t my favorite superhero movie of all time, but I honestly think it’s pretty underrated. It’s not even trying to be for everyone, which actually might not be a bad thing, and it does get pretty goofy at times. But I like the dynamic all three “Marvels” have with each other, and no matter what sort of crazy situations they were going through, we had those three as a consistent foundation to view it all from. Not to mention, the action scenes were filmed in a pretty unique and interesting way, which is worth acknowledging when it’s so easy to just fall into a routine of generic pure cgi superhero fights the entire time. And though the villain did kinda just seem vaguely evil for a while, once we finally learn her motivation, it kinda makes you think, or at least makes sense. I don’t know, I saw Madame Web the other day and I couldn’t stop thinking that it tried to do what The Marvels did and failed spectacularly, so coming back to this movie feels like a relief.

    • @MattMurrellReacts
      @MattMurrellReacts  5 месяцев назад +1

      I completely agree that the action scenes are really creative and fun to watch! And you're right that the three of them together have great chemistry. While some things maybe didn't hit for me personally, it is far from Marvel's worst movie and I think people were way too harsh on it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
      I haven't seen Madame Web but based on what I've heard I can only imagine that The Marvels seems like an Oscar winning film by comparison, haha!

  • @p-forest

    I agree with about everything you said, this movie was ok, not nearly the worst MCU movie. About 2/3 of the way I was saying the same things you said, there were interesting ideas there, but the execution fell short. It had the bones of a better movie with some good action and scenes, interesting ideas, but parts felt rushed/not deep enough/edited for time, may have needed longer/more scenes like with Carol & Monica; and I felt the villain was forgettable, needed...something.
    One thing I haven't seen anyone say (so maybe I'm way off base) is I felt the cinematography was a bit basic, like an amateur still working out their own style. Like tons of straight on shots of the 3 of them smack dab in the middle, straight on. Made me wonder if another director or cinematographer (I think sometimes those are different people) could take the same script, same scenes, but make it at least visually more appealing...maybe I'm way off base, and I may not be explaining what I mean well.

    • @MattMurrellReacts
      @MattMurrellReacts  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, thanks for watching! Yeah I definitely felt there was a better version of this movie that kind of got lost in the shuffle. I feel like the problem with the villain is that she wasn't thematically connected to Captain Marvel (plot-wise they were, but that was about it) so she just felt a bit generic.
      I don't think you're way off about the cinematography at all! But I do feel like it was pretty much on par with what I usually expect from Marvel so it didn't feel that out of place to me

    I think some people watch the movie and try and find the "bad" that they heard might be there.. I suspect most people disparaging the movie would have a different experience if they had not had heard these "rumors" before watching it.. what is extremely stupid is the huge amount of negative "reviews" it got before it even came out.. end even stupider is the amount of people who didn't see it base on those fake reviews.

    I liked The Marvels but knew it would be largely because of Ms. Marvel who with her family are the highlights of the film.
    Captain Marvel was a lot better here but is still somewhat the least interesting. Carol and Monica's issue could have been handled better and Kamala's 'Never Meet Your Heroes' character beat was too brief.
    The villain was in the same vein as Ronan from the first GOTG though less impressionable having forgotten her name for more than half and after the movie (- ^ )
    The Young Avengers tease was actually a shock and I'm excited about it (-_^ )

      100% agree with all of this! Ms. Marvel and her family steal the show every time they’re on screen. I feel like there could have been way more to Carol and Monica’s arcs but it was probably all muddled down in reshoots unfortunately. Yeah the villain is sadly forgettable. That one scene got me excited for Young Avengers! A lot of great actors that should have really fun chemistry 🙂

    Speaking about recent mcu projects I feel the problem is disney +. It appears back in 2019/2020 marvel was told by disney to try to release as much marvel related projects as possible to try to keep subscribers on disney +. The current disney ceo said it was a mistake and they are going to dial it back down. Looking at 2022, it seems there was almost a new marvel related project dropping every month on disney +. So to keep up with that demand i feel some projects weren't "fully cooked" or worked on long enough and like you said some fans have felt underwhelmed. Nit just the marvels but with a few recent mcu projwcts for a while now

    • @p-forest
      @p-forest 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think this is a large part of it, the previous CEO had a rep for quantity vs. quality, and he pressured Feige for the need for new D+ content. Apparently Feige was too busy/overwhelmed to do the typical review of scripts, footage etc. like they used to, but now they're slowing down, will hopefully get back to better content. I 100% agree, so many of the recent projects don't feel 'fully cooked,.

Omf Brie ❤ she delivered the best Captain Marvel ever - obviously Carol now is for the first time ever - on her own skin! Such a development omg! Her invulnerable hero side and her vulnerable humanity. She started jaded and tired with all the pressure on her shoulders, alone.. and ends up loving being part of a team! We saw more layers to Carol’s personality. She couldn’t act on her max power, always holding back, so they wouldn’t randomly switch. Plus the fact that the bangle Dar-Benn wore weakened her. That made they think about real Great team ups! Awesome. Oh Kamala oh boy!!!!! She’s a delight! Monica so cool! Everything here is amazing. Their chemistry is out of this world! Goose and the Flerkittens! ❤ The flaws are normal, nothing we haven’t seen in the MCU before. Love it so much! So good to see my fave Captain Marvel back ❤

    This doesn’t require some long analyzation. This movie just sucks.
    Before Marvel started to become “woke” and choose quantity over quality, I never ONCE complained about a movie they released. Not even one. Nearly everything Marvel was releasing were box office successes and overall they created one of the world’s most successful franchises.
    I used to get so upset with critics (nothing political) I thought, just shutup and enjoy the movie. Though, nowadays I physically cannot do that without running into some politically motivated joke, casting that was ruined due to DEI (Diversion, Equity, and Inclusion), racist jokes about white people that NEVER would’ve been allowed if the roles were reversed, race swapping and gender swapping… the list goes on.
    Before all the political BS, Marvel was amazing. Not a single person can prove otherwise. It is what it is 🤷‍♂️
