    The amount of music talent and experience in this man is staggering. I am a guitar player with 35 years in the bag and I am both humbled and stunned when I watch you talk about music. I could not teach you a single thing but you could teach me for decades. You are such a legend Rick. NEVER stop doing this.

    Acquiring a wealth of musical knowledge and sharing it must be one of the most rewarding experiences on earth. Life without music would render any landscape barren. Rick, we appreciate your commitment to teaching us music and its history. Cheers!

    I'm always so impressed when Rick seems to effortlessly bang out songs I could NEVER learn to play. It's staggering to a guy like me who doesn't read music. I don't read, but I know things about music, being a player and a writer. You naturally learn things whether you mean to or not, as long as you're paying attention. So even though I don't read, I understand how difficult some of the things he does so effortlessly really are. I'm constantly amazed with him. "Josie" really takes the cake!

      HA - watched the first minute and thought the same. I'm so intimidated by Steely Dan songs, I don't know where to start. Would love to play that intro properly!

    • @StephVanLinden
      @StephVanLinden 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. Learning by ear is such a challenge, and Rick makes it look easy. I'm entirely self-taught. All I had starting out was two chord books and the free time that coincides with being a teenager. I figured out most songs by ear and occasionally through tabs on the internet, and I would often discover upon watching a concert DVD of the original artist that I was on the wrong end of the fretboard entirely even though I was playing the "right" notes. I only had a few concert DVDs, so RUclips was a revelation when it became available. I have a lot of respect for people who have the ear to not only get the notes right, but also get the voicing right without visual context.

    • @frandanco6289
      @frandanco6289 2 года назад +2

      @@StephVanLinden The thing about music is that once you learn the basics of music, and you are learning about it, it will then start building up a memory bank in your mind, that will help you so much more later when you are advancing and getting deeper into how these Notes on the piano, keyboard, etc., go So Far into infinity probably, and they are always related back to that keyboard...
      It all came mostly from there... Yes, there were string instruments Centuries, Eons, ago too, and they are so great for learning too, but when the keyboard came, then the real Masters of Classical music were there and there is where much more began...
      But, getting those classes into how musical notes are made, how to eventually sight read them, and play them, and this alone will open up the entire world of music notes and how they always fit together when placed properly, will happen...
      God Bless you and yours !!!

      Hi Larry. I taught myself to play/read 22 years ago. I’ve had years of heavy practicing, some where I didn’t have the time. The important thing is to recognize your weaknesses and overcome them. If you can’t read music, sit down and learn. It may look like an alien language, but eventually (much like English) you’ll look at the page one day and everything will click together. You can do it: 12 year-old band students learn how every year. All the internet resources available now should make it much easier. Hope this helps!

    It’s amazing how Rick can listen to a song and know what notes, chords and scale a song or vocal is in. The best I really got was my ear was trained decently to my fingers for guitar meaning if my brain was looking for a certain note my fingers would automatically find the note on the guitar, I couldn’t tell you what note it was unless u gave me a minute to look where my fingers were it was just kinda playing by feel but man it would be cool to know everything like Rick.

    The GHOST of Rick Beato.
    This is crazy, because I would frequent Buckhead Music .....a lot. From when Dave was up there right as you hit Peachtree from the Roswell Rd. intersect (by the Buckhead Theatre/ or The Roxy back then) to when he moved to the location on Roswell Rd. , further north (the pic you posted) . I bought a couple guitars from Dave and still have them. Dave had those 2 little Beagle dogs - one was named Rose , she was kind of elderly at the time. Seems like I vaguely remember seeing you hanging around , I guess in between guitar lessons...?? I dont know - maybe. So weird seeing the photo of the old Buckhead Music shop - I hope Dave is doing great : he's a great guy. Ha! And I do remember the huge Blockbuster Music up close to Mid Town/Piedmont Hospital area - I used to go in there a bit too , when I had the time. That time frame : the early 90's was a great time to be living in Atlanta , a lot going on (then again, when isn't there a lot going on in Atlanta?) Shame I never formally met you , Rick - kinda seems like I know you , after watching so many of these awesome videos you come out with . I commend you on your success of this channel , it is a great hub of learning and furthering the journey of guitar.
    God Bless.

    A bad band teacher almost snuffed out my musical flame in 5th grade. Maybe it was tough love, but I did not respond well to the discouraging taunting, teasing, bullying he gave me. The only reason I stuck with it was that my folks had paid $100 for my alto sax and I felt guilty over the money they had invested in me.
    PS: Eventually I learned enough basic music theory to teach players in every band I’ve been in, teach myself intermediate guitar, pick up flute, clarinet, keys. And I still have my sax.

    I totally agree with the concept that nothing makes you learn a given subject better than after your first attempt at teaching it! I have a revised take on an old (and somewhat incorrect) axiom--which applies here...and it goes like this:
    "Those who can, DO. Those who can, and actually explain what they do, TEACH. Those who CAN'T...HECKLE!"

Many of us went on to share the knowledge and teach others. Pretty much the same happened to me... The only difference is, music has never been a job for me, it's all a hobby. And I made a series on my channel similar to "What Makes This Song Great", where I teach Mark Knopfler's songs. In fact, I already covered 80 of his songs. And my story was, from when I was 15 and to this day I just learn every single song that I love on a guitar. And developed my ear from absolute garbage to okay. No perfect pitch, no hardcore theory, no nothing, just listening and playing. A lot!

    I'm still stuck on your "revealing" Seal and his best song. That album was made in '94. Your helping him! How nice. Today I listened and relistened to it.

    Hello Rick, there is a singer here in Australia called Sarah Blasko, who when in high school was told by a music teacher that she didn't have a musical bone in her body. These days, she writes music and has 5 aria nominated albums to her name.

    Respect man. I grew up without internet so, every song I learned was by ear. Then I’d teach my friends the songs. It helps to this day. I can hear something and just about figure it out.

    Some of the more complex stuff might go over my head, but that's the beauty of being able to rewind and listen again. Sometimes it even sinks in. 😂 Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you, your dedication, your work, and your heart. ❤️
