Fall Lawn Care | How to Aerate, Dethatch & Overseed Your Lawn the Easy Way!! Sun Joe Dethatcher

- As a part of my fall lawn care I core aerated, dethatched, and overseeded my lawn. This year I decided to finally try to start making improvements to the lawn. So far I have dethatched this spring, then I shampooed the yard during the summer and now in the fall I am core aerating, dethatching again, and overseeding. Everything that has been done so far has made improvements but I really believe I will get the best results after we aerate.
I completed this part of the project all in one day. I rented the Ryan Aerator from a local tool rental store for a 4 hour rental. I made three passes over my lawn and one over the neighbors and had plenty of time to spare. It really was not that bad of a project that I think most DIY people are capable of completing. The only difficult part is turning the machine at the end of each pass. That being said if you take your time I think you can do it.
As an experiment I decided to use the Sun Joe dethatcher I bought earlier this year to help pick up the plugs. Some people leave the plugs and allow them to decay to feed the lawn and some pick them up like I decided to do. Using the Sun Joe to pick up the plugs also acted as another light dethatching.
After that was complete I overseeded the lawn with a mixture of perennial rye ane kentucky bluegrass which has worked well for me in the past. To check how things were doing the soil probe was used to check if the seeds had made it down into the core aeration holes.

Protip: You DO NOT need to lift the machine and turn it like you did in the video. You can easily use that handle to lower the wheels again, which will elevate the tines so you can easily pivot the machine on the large plastic roller. I aerated with these machines for a whole summer but it only took me a few passes to be able to do this strategy without stopping/slowing down. Enjoy!

yeah, i want a bit better lawn myself but some of the methods and techniques and amount of effort and money people spend on something that is really not that important means an awful lot more of them were incorrectly potty trained when small than i initially thought.

That’s unfair conclusion. You plug and unplug your wife many times in a year, but you only do it once for your lawn. Why compare them to each other.

Great video! A little aerating tip I've found is to work the lawn in a square pattern as opposed to back and forth. Then when you pick it up, you're only rotating 90 degrees instead of 180. This puts lets wear on the lawn as you aren't turning the wheels in place for a full half turn, as well as expending half as much energy lifting the aerator up per turn. With all those passes, I'm sure the lawn is going to come out looking killer, despite the hot weather. Love the idea of using the sunjoe dethatcher with a bag to pick up the plugs. Looks like you also got a good amount of thatch out again as well. Great work!

When I rent those big heavy aerators, I try not to stop! Instead of going back and forth and being forced to stop and lifting/turning, I go in circles as much as I can to keep the aerator moving. When I get close to the center, I have to get creative and make some loops to get back to the center.
I do have a manual aerator for corners or I’ll lift the aerator machine for the corners too.
My soil unfortunately is rocky so I keep the plugs. I need all available soil .

Top dress next with construction sand and fine mulch. If you seed before this step and then use a drag mat you will set the seed down to the dirt and get some cover. Also, you can buy gypsum to help make looser soil. I leave the plugs, the drag matt with chew them up. Consider feeding the lawn through your sprinkler system. Nice job. Bob

Used this today did a nice job.
Downside,,,,,it requires a an extension cord. Small yard fine.
Some thoughts; If you wanted to break up the "wax layer" on the top of the soil then aeration does that and you shouldn't need the soap treatment. The greater the organic matter in your soil generally means that it is healthier, will absorb more water and allow grass roots to grow deeper for better drought tolerance. So instead of thatching, just use the aeration step to mix the soil and thatch and leave the plugs on the top to cover the thatch. Allow the natural soil bacteria and earth worms break down the thatch. One other thing that I have seen and done is to add lime to your soil in the fall or early spring to help balance the ph. My understanding is lime balanced the soil ph to promote better natural bacteria and fertilizer absorption.
Wrong you leave those plugs and if got a weed lawn there are seeds sitting in those plugs just waiting for the perfect condition to sprout I would remove the plugs

Yes, please provide an update video in about 6 weeks (like 2nd week of October). When I did this process back when I lived on Long Island, I waited until about mid September, then put down the fertilizer two weeks later.
I will try to do that. Mid September is the perfect time to do this.

Great video! I would have reversed the aeration and shampoo. Use the aerator to pull the cores, then come over the top with the shampoo. The shampoo will make it into the holes you’ve just created. It will really open up your soil to all the flow of air, water, and nutrients get to the root zone. Awesome video!

Power raking and aerating are the best things you could do for your lawn I use the sun Joe power rake and a used Classen aerator I bought online used

I have a sun-joe also, love that thing. I wonder if you let the plugs dry out long enough, and didn't use the bag, if the sun-joe would just break them up? It's fairly effective at dislodging acorns from the ground too!
Ya mine broke some of them up but picked up most which almost acted like a little topdressing

Looking forward to an update. I’m weird in that I have developed a theory that a lot of the settling and sinking in our neighborhoods is due to removal of clippings, all leaves, etc. Tons of organic material is leached out and then removed. I’ve added about 8 tons of topsoil to our lawn over the years just to keep it “raised” to normal level. We rake leaves when we need to but I’d prefer to mulch everything. Core aerated last fall and again last week. Left the plugs but just bought the SunJoe. Hoping to try to pulverize the plugs with the scarifier then overseed. Looking forward to your results, friend!

Cool to hear I will see what I can do this year but for sure more videos to come next growing season. I will say they yard is hard to show the full results on camera but is getting thicker.
If you lift the tines before turning a corner/turning around, it makes it much easier.

We're also in a more warmer fall compared to previous years when in the next few weeks it would start snowing... this Oct we're projecting 90 degrees on average... how much would that affect the yard if we started now vs waiting til it gets cooler?

In my experience doing this process in warmer weather will stress out the lawn easier and it will be harder for the seed to start germinating and survive. In my area we have "cool" season grass that thrives in cooler weather and we just hope to keep it alive in the summer.

I have never heard of anyone picking them up. The organic material breaks down in just a couple of months and feeds your lawn. Cmon

My rental shop has a few that must have been made in 1960. It was terribly heavy and so awkward 😬 I usually rent from them, boy I must be getting older or weaker! It takes at least 2 big men to lift the behemoth into your truck. Ohhh my back and wrist are crying out right now, I did my neighbors as well since they are so kind to me, bad part they live on the corner and have double lots. I think I may no something that is have told myself and other , that it will be a cold day in hell when I have a company come in and do it!!! 😝 😂😂😅

Hi, Will this work in compacted clay soil? I also watched your French drain video and had a similar question, what kind of soil do you have and are you in a cold zone. Wondering because we're in zone 5, WI and I'm looking at putting a French drain in to deal with clay soil that is slow to drain in one part of our yard. Thanks so much.

Use a verticutter, you pull much more thatch and create better movement of oxygen into the soil. Cut one direction than a different direction. We verticut or groom greens every other week during the growing season, we areate A LOT, but we use differet tines, hollow and solid, vertidrain which is 12 inches deep solid tines or hydrojet which is pressurized water that we use to punch holes. In really poor greens drill and fill is the last resort.
I agree with you the golf course I worked at in the summer had a very similar routine. My goal was to see what results I could achieve keeping it as simple as possible. Although next year I may need to change that.

I think id have sacrificed the plugs insted of raking them up, then seeded and used a soap like the baby shampoo.
But don't golf courses put down a pellet that gets in the plug holes and holds moisture you might have to get that at a comercial supplier.
Do you bag your grass when mowing or do you use a mulching mower?
Just an FYI you should NOT water in the evening or overnight. This can cause fungus and mold. The best time to water is at daylight or shortly afterwards so the water is there when it's needed
Guessing that’s why we saw some dollar spot or whatever disease/fungus he has going on.
I’d add if you have clay and are picking up your plugs it’s a perfect time to get some organic material or soil to cover up the new seed and fill in the plug holes. In a few years you’ll have a much healthier lawn. I have blue clay and it used to get as hard as concrete in July and August and water would just run off and not soak in, it’s slowly getting better.
What do you put down for organic material? Peat moss?

leave them -- they will decompose back into soil -- water in the seed and the plugs are good for the soil and puts the soil back into Mother Earth.... I did mine with professional help, and seeded myself -- plugs are gone after 2 weeks or so...

How far spaced are those arborvitae? I have read a recommendation for 6 feet from each other and 3 feet for the next row (offset). Those look closer to 10 feet. I saw the video where you put them in and then this one ... how do they look now? I need to build a privacy screen of these things and I know it is going to take a couple long years to fill in. They boom this year after being established for a year? Seems like that first year is just a rough one on all the videos I watched with these plants.

Waiting on some cooler weather so that I can Power Rake to begin the process..
I really wanted to topdress with topsoil or sand but to be honest I just did not have time. We had other commitments and I needed to get everything done that Saturday. If I don't get the rests I'm looking for I am going to set aside more time in the spring to do it again with topdressing. I am still hopefully though topdressing is not always required and I am also hoping the sun Joe breaking is some of the plugs will act as a little topdressing.
I'm in SE Michigan as well, and dethatched on that 90 degree day a few days ago. Just the backyard that I didn't get to do anything with last season.

It was a great video. I am a former golf course manager,22 years. Every machine you used was a small version of the large machines we used on the golf course. Only thing I didn’t like was your sprinkler. Those oscillating sprinklers are the worst to use. They just don’t get the amount of irrigation that a lawn needs.The ideal sprinkling system would be an in ground system which
might be expensive to install now. They should be installed before the lawn is seeded. I would research it and see the best alternative for your lawn. Keep up the great work.👍🏻
In your opinion, if you have a small yard, like half the size of your front, is it worth renting to aerorate? Or is there a more manual labor method?
An excellent option for manual aeration is a step-on aeration device. I'd include a link, but RUclips has been deleting comments with links. But just search for "manual core aerator", and you'll see several options, various makes/models with two tines or three. I like the two-tine "Yard Butler" one. If you get two, and are reasonably well-coordinated, you can just walk across your lawn with your shoes in each one, a la "Romper Stompers" style.

I'm your opinion, would the sun Joe Dethatcher work for picking up acorns in a yard? I've got a ton of them since the previous owner didn't care much for it.
I appreciate the enthusiasm! I don't know if I would buy a sun Joe just for the acorns but I think it would work. I kinda wish I had an oak tree to test this idea!

For what it's worth, my SunJoe dethatcher does a pretty good job picking up all the tree cones in my yard. Acorns are smaller, but I'll bet they'd come up too.
I found that the dethatcher cartridge (as opposed to scarifier) really is as much a "power rake" as it is a dethatcher. It does have finer tines than a regular rake would, and gets deeper so it can pull up the thatch. But it's essentially just a really aggressive rake, so a lot of the kinds of things you'd expect raking to do, the dethatcher does as well.

Great video, be careful watering at night that can cause a fungus to set it. If all possible water it early in the morning around 5-6 am that will allow water to be absorb during the day, then if you have to water hit it with a light touch of water when you get home from work no later than 7 pm. Also you can use your mower on the plugs in the yard, put it on mulch to break down the plugs or you can bag. I bet it's going to look great for next year if not already 👍. Thanks

That is something I should have said in the video and I edited it out. I always seed in a 2 opposite directions and apply fert parallel to the street so it is harder to notice any strips you may create by accident when overlapping.

Watch out with night time watering you are asking for a fungal or mold infestation. I would pre treat with alternating cycles of disease ex and then the bioadvance the following month. Keep it rotating to avoid it growing tolerance to the Propiconazole and Azoxystrobin. A good rule of thumb is to not water 6 hours before sunset that's worked well for me
Isn't it the same myth about not watering in the morning which risks burning the grass because of the lens effect of the water droplets and the mid-day sun? How about rain falling during all hours?

@@ThatTechTeacher427 it all depends on medium type too heavy clay I would not water as often because it retains so much water. The morning up until early afternoon is what I would do as you don't want too much moisture at night. To each his/her own. I've seen some horrible brown patch from poor watering schedules and I myself have even been to blame for it too. You live and learn
@@brogren802 This is great info to share, I fell victim to precisely that- (over)watering at night, resulting in a very bad brown spot scenario, I am still trying to undo that damage. Very good advice I had to learn the hard way, unfortunately. I now use Disease ex monthly as mentioned above.
@@apexiii1 i ran into this problem earlier this year. Fricken fungus! I over watered because I was trying overseed during the spring, and lost patches to fungus. I ended up spraying the entire lawn with a garden hose bottle of anti fungus, anti bug treatment. It stopped the fungus, but it also stopped the growth. My fall lawn is doing much better. Its easier to control, and less of a headache.
Taking care of your yard can quickly become a full-time job. I don't mind mowing and trimming, raking leaves as needed, but I've got lots of other things higher on the priority list, things I actually enjoy doing.

Easier way to turn the aerator is to disengage the tines, touch the handle to advance the machine and just spin the machine while advancing it, reengage the tines, no lifting the machine to rotate it..

How hard is it to clean that aerator before you have to take it back?
Not bad, I used a screw driver to push out the plugs left in the tines then sprayed it with the hose. Looked just like when I rented it

So far this spring the lawn is growing in noticably thicker. I plan to make an update this summer and fall

Call the soap a wetting agent or surfactant because thats all it is. It doesnt help the soil, it allows the water to drain slower so more can be absorbed in to the soil instead of run off or draining to fast

@@ThatTechTeacher427 thats how surfactants work, there are other chemicals they market for areation but those really dont work and they have a surfactant added as well
