You certainly make a good point there, Fil! I must admit I'm an avid Tamiya kit building fan, but sometimes it's great to be able to take out an RTR basher and just enjoy the guilt-free joy of just thrashing the pants off it without a care in the world, knowing that it'll most likely survive whatever you throw at it! After spending so much time and effort building, painting and detailing a Tamiya kit there is always a feeling of sadness when you drive it hard and end up with its first battle scars! So I say there is room for both in this hobby, but if I had to choose only one, it would be a kit. Cheers, buddy! 😎👍
That first scratch on a freshly built kit is SO heartbreaking! Wanna see a grown man cry? Build and paint up a Tamiya Bruiser, take it for a break-in run, roll it, scratch paint 😢 😭 😿
Fil, you definitely hit the nail on the head when you said instant gratification, referring to ready to run by it now, etc. I also think as time goes on people don’t want to build and fix anything. They want to pull it out of a box throw a battery in and drive it. I think it bothers people that they even have to charge a battery. I always find it amusing when I’m at the hobby shop and I see growing adult men, my age paying another guy to fix ,repair, upgrade their RC car, especially when it is something ridiculously simple. So many people just don’t want to take the time to use tools or use their hands. These ready to run import bashers are great though for kids or people that don’t take the hobby too serious and just want something to beat on. I’ve had a few and they are great for that. Just don’t waste money on upgrading them. I did that once, and it was a waste of money.
I do like an occasional RTR to bash around but nothing will ever replace the joy of building a kit! I think Tamiya is right to stay in their lane and keep doing what they do best and making kits and models. It has worked for them all these years and they continue to sell. Now in another 15 years or so is there still going to be the interest in kit building or as us old guys start leaving the hobby will it shrivel up and fade away? Only time will tell! RTRs have been around in many versions and many fads for 30 years so I don't think these mini RCs are going to change anything. It will burn itself out like others have just be a regular sub section of the hobby. I mean look at the RC drag scene, that exploded into a major thing and now everything is on sale and clearance as it is not moving and the non-stop innovations have simmered down. I think once all these Amazon RCs outprice themselves the amount of them offered will slowly diminish and it will just be another wave in the RC tidal pool.
Very good perspective on it, Addam. I think you nailed it. We'll see what happens in 20 years when we're too blind and shaky to put rere Tamiyas together. Pin that one, call ya in 20! Lol!
These RTR budget cars are the future of RC cars! Although I do miss the days of buying a kid and spending many hours at the dining room table building and understanding how it works. That's the past hopefully the future budget friendly cars can bring more people into the hobby and help to carry it onmyself and my son have had so many quality hours together with this hobby. Hopefully even though the RGR's takeover, it will still be a wonderful hobby to enjoy after all budget equals super fun great video buddy.
Thanks for the great feedback! Yeah, the RTR world sure is the majority of what we see in RC these days. I supposwerm're the old guys now, with fond memories of staying up all night building a kit from scratch. 🤣
We're new to the channel and just getting back in the hobby. I share the same view that unfortunately we are in a disposable age.. however these new small scales have their place in getting folks into the hobby and then things like changing out electronics. Now me and my son are building our own trucks and we love it. Thanks for putting your time and energy into the channel...we appreciate it brother
Hey, thanks for being here and supporting! I totally appreciate it. It's so great that you're getting back into the hobby with your son. That's one of the best elements of this hobby. Hope you guys are having a blast! 👍🏻
If not for RTR i wouldn't be in the hobby now. Life doesn't currently allow time enough to drive the rigs i have, much less build any. I buy, drive a few times and put on a shelf once another comes out that catches my eye. Hopefully once the kiddos get older they'll be into it and we can build a few together.
I’m 71, and I’m looking for a Tamiya kit, but am loving my Hypergo 16208! The toughest truck I’ve ever bashed, and it runs 3s. Yeah, it’s hard to resist these on Allieexpress
We all tend to forget that at the time we had our first kits there was ready to run cheaper car (less performant, sure, but there was). And you will never replace the joy of building a kit... That being said, big T is living on our nostalgy and it is a different world... But somehow kit building still exist, and will remain : you just have to look at all OpenRC project relying on 3D printing to understand that this part of the hobby is evolving as well towards something else...
I think the rtr cars will be great sellers for a ling time, like you say. Its easy, but a true racer will want to build there car so they know it and understand it. Or like me, building the kit is a great deal of fun and thats why rtr has never botherd me. Half the fun is missing 👍
You can’t argue with the way the market is going. Most people do not have a grand to blow on a big scale Rc so definitely a high market demographic for the small stuff. The value is definitely there as well with all these new brands. Fun is fun, no matter how big the car is.
It feels like this year's secondary/tertiary obsession along the lines of the low riders, the mini crawlers, etc... this is a new niche in the market its making a roar right meow. Its fans are flocking to it. When the dust settles the tried and true core RC fundamentals will still remain. It's always great to have the fond memories of what brought you the greatest joy. That's something that this new generation or young RCer's are experiencing right meow in their own unique way. For me it was ripping around my second gen electric rustler while my buddy drove his bandit. Then I got a nitro savage and he had the t-maxx 2.5. Talk about a steep learning curve! TL:DR It's a new segment of market developing, it'll settle in and something new will come along. Never lose that memory of what helped bring you into the hobby. Great Video! I like the shift in dynamic.
@@poorboysrc am I saying meow? Do I drink milk from a saucer? Do I look all nimbly-bimbly? Do I look like I can jump tree limb to tree limb? Ever since Super Troopers, I've had my phone auto correct 'now' to 'meow'. I forget sometimes 😅 and have to vigilant when type a professional email and such. 🍻
KIT building is good exactly as you said, for understanding how things work. Mini RTRs have many advantages. Everything is already ready, you charge the battery and go for it. Many of them are of the quality of the larger ones. Less weight, less consequences of falls and impacts. Plus, they don't need a lot of room for action and are much more compact than larger rcs.
In the world of today. You are correct, most take convenience over putting in a little effort. Personally I enjoy both world. There is nothing like building and learning the layout then making your own design on that body. But I can’t lie, the mini’s are a weird weakness. 😅Cheers!
for myself, i'm a fan of both ideas..when i got into the hobby, i bought the RTR minus batteries and had many hours and days bashing and racing about..then when my dad passed away, i was looking for a RTR tractor/trailer combo which wasn't available except in Tamiya kit form and after that, i was hooked on building it myself! to each their own, and i accept everyone's decision, but for me at the moment, i like building it from the kit! cheers bud! see you in the next one!
I would really love to see the small bashers in kit form just because I love to build. I will say though that the mini 1/24th scale crawlers are what got me back into the hobby.
I was only into 10 scale crawlers a bigger bashers but I got into mini crawlers & now I'm getting into mini bashers any company not getting into minis is bad business for sure. I purchased my Mojave from my local hobby shop. This is not a trend it's only getting bigger for sure. At first I didn't like the mini crawlers but they became so good & fun no way was I going to miss out on it.💯
Building and keeping in shape is the love of the hobby and unfortunately something for us old guys (51) who had nothing else to do😀when young. Today the world is going faster for the kids. Internet , ps 5 , VR , smartphones, ….. Personal i believe it an new beginning and it will not go away. I will never sell my tamiya’s so they can see what it was in my time
Good discussion Fil. I am not sold on the cheap RTR RCs but I do like some of the bigger branded RTR cars. Still not picked any of them up though as I prefer the hobby side of building before I repair 😁 I think the RTR movement is here to stay though and things will get progressively more difficult to find the good performers over time.
I hear ya, pal. The big brand RTR's are tough to say no to. I mean, my Arrma Granite RTR with 4x4 boost cost about the same as my BBX. That's a scary thought!
Last summer I rebuilt a Tamiya ta-01 which my father found in a box. It was from 1994. I found every spare part I needed, even metal upgrades, changed the servo and ESC, New body because the old one was lost. It drives beautifully much better than any new Chinese crap. Last year a bought a rlaarlo instead of an tt-02r, because it was faster .... big mistake. Sold it and returned to Tamiya.
@@poorboysrc With tamiya I can find parts for a 30 years old car in my local (and only) hobby store or in online stores after 5 minutes search. For Rlaarlo I waited 2+ weeks for a spure gear which was stripped in the second run. Handling was also terrible. I tried to run in a small amateur track we set up in parking spaces with other tamiyas and it was a joke. But the final decision was made because of how difficult it is to work on it. In order to change the pinion gear in my arrma typhon it takes 5 screws and less than 10 minutes. In Rlaarlo it takes more than 30 screws and one hour. Same situation with WPL, WL toys, Mjx, all of them were complete waste of money and time. Less is more my friend. I prefer to have one Arrma, couple of tamiyas and a second hand Traxas than the whole of china.
My experience of RTR is that you still build them but in reverse order. And the hop up market is huge with some awesome companies offering all manner of upgrades to your RC. I have a 6S Infraction which has been rebuilt at least 4 times and modded to death. Just because it comes ready to run doesn't mean it's a disposable RC. Tamiya are nostalgic but to me are just nice scale models that can be operated remotely.
Nope, still building is what I like and do the most. Then most RTR I have get modified over time some second hand. In the UK we are builders and being an older guy in RC when I started there was no RTR just kits for many years and a lot of the old brands are gone. Tamiya still the best and my first buy 🙂It does not help a lack of new kits at the moment, why I have done a couple of scratch builds there some good chassis kits to use.
I must be missing something. The minis and micros were a thing and pretty popular for over 15 years. I had a Losi Mini LST, a Mini T and Micro T all before 2010, then the Traxxas 1/16 E-Revo platform was hugely popular. This doesn’t seem like news to me.
You're right, the minis have been around for a long time, they're not new news. But today, everyone and their uncle is pumping out minis, and the popularity (racing, drifting, etc.) Is at a fever pitch. 👍🏻
The rtr are pretty cool with having everything and easy to get going but they are all pretty much the same from brand to brand I've only been in the hobby for about a year and just built a kit awhile ago it was a cheaper one but ya was crazy fun and I like how ya put the time to build it and understand how everything works and custom paint is pretty cool kinda makes the cars one of a kind so they not the same as others but ya ....
I would love to see more ARTR or slider/roller type. Most of the time I dont want the radio gear, and that's just clutter in the shop. I also have nostalgia for building kits, and would gladly do more, but I also see that the market has moved away. As for Tamiya, I do think they need to start modernizing if theyre going to stay relevant. I'd love to see a Sand Scorcher and the like with today's plastics and more bashability built in. Not to mention some modern designs..
I restarted into rcs with a 1/16 mjx 16208 and it's great but just too small. The inability to drive in grass is what made me put it on a shelf for a year now. I got a 1/8 Kraton 6s and then a typhon tlr roller this year and wow these thing are so awesome. I like rollers I think over RTR or kits. I think the small stuff will get people into the hobby but I also think they will leave quickly if they don't experience something bigger.
I think good mini bashers are great for kids and beginners if they're around $100, not so much when they're a fair bit above that and still come with brushed setup. For me 1/10 and 1/8 is much more fun, you can see them clearly at longer distance so you can actually use the speed fully and still have control, unlike small and fast RCs you still need to run pretty close to you which makes high speed less useful. And of course the increased ground clearance means you don't need to be as picky as for where you can run your RC.
I prefer to build my stuff. Always have, always will. My first hobby grade RC was a Grasshopper back in the day and I loved building that little guy. Most recently I bought the re-re YZ-10 and it took me back to when I built my first one in the 90's. There's something therapeutic about seeing the car/buggy/truck come together and learning how a transmission works, how the differentials work, and upgrading as you go along. But, in this world of instant gratification and short attention spans, I think builders kits will end up being fewer and fewer except for maybe the "professional" level. Geez, I just picked up a used salvage 8s Kraton that I'll be rebuilding this coming week or so. Just so I can build one. Btw, good to see another Canuck YT channel.
I'm with ya, man. I call it "Tamiya Therapy." Lol. There's something extremely gratifying about opening a box of parts, and several hours later, having a fully functional RC that you built. Cheers! 🍻
And Kyosho needs to join this 😂 i mean the more affordable and other scales. i love the miniZ, but my gosh its expensive. But yeah, i do love building also, but sometimes i dont have the patience or time to do it. Great points bud!
Yesssss Steel Panther! 😂 Love your channel bro. Keep it up. Cheap, durable and portable... I've been into the "mini" RCs for years now. I have 10th scale + but always seem to come back to the small stuff. Just don't need as much room to run them and the fun can be just as much or more than the bigger stuff.
But also, to speak on kit building. I agree with you I think we live in a very disposable society and unfortunately that's what most people want these days for their money but me personally, I am more and more intrigued with building kits now more than ever exactly for the reasons that you stated - the memories from doing it back in the day along with being able to start new memories building as a dad with my son. Also, getting to know your vehicle inside and out. There's just something to be said about something that you built yourself. They seem to tend to mean more in the end.. I tend to built out my RTR's as well anyway haha. LC racing is a crossover in this subject though. Not only have they been probably my favorite small scale RC for years but they also offer build it yourself kits and they are race ready on top of that so they kind of hit on all RTR, bashing, racing or build kits. I highly recommend them.
You could also make the argument that LC racing is somewhat the reason for the recent mini trend, as a couple years ago as they were the ones that got cloned by wltoys and apparently the wltoys clones are what Arrma took dimensions off of in their development of the Grom.
@drewnewcomb2909 really good points, man. Undoubtedly, the RTR and mini market is hot now and your explanation helps make sense of how we got here. Appreciate you! 👍🏻
I think it all depends on how much time and money you can invest in the hobby. Now that I have more time (when I can allocate my time to the hobby), I enjoy building kits more than before. For one thing, I do not like cumulating lower grade transmitters that come with RTR models.
Tamiya Tamtech Gear 😉 1/14 almost "RTR"*, not too long ago with a Grasshopper mini-body (* needs battery and charger). They even did some years ago a 4WD Hotshot at that scale 😮 But yeah, cannot compare to the cheap mini basher from chinese shops. I absolutely don't mind building a chassis, the only tedious part is cutting, painting and decalling (stickering ?) the body. And lately, Tamiya provides pre-cut and pre-painted body. But I have to admit my actual "favorite" is the Nascar Losi and I'm sure I would love the Micro-B and the Arrma Typhon for example 😅 I guess, there will be a building market until our generation disappears, then it may become a "niche" market, supplanted by these RTR 🤔 Who knows 😅
I have a few, the losi lmt gravedigger and it’s very very good. the main thing is having a small garden minis allow running anytime where as the big stuff requires a car trip out. Which is nice but not all the time. i do like building a kit from time to time 👍
I will stay with RTR for the smaller scales but for 1/10 and 1/14 semi it will stay kits for me. If the market shifts then it will shift to boutique kit makes for the dedicated kit builders.
I definitely prefer to drive something I built, but the only place I can drive consistently is in my small backyard. I have a couple of Mini Jrx2's that work great. LC Racing makes some 1/14 kits, and Associated released a kit version of the 14B, but reviews say the manual and building experience are terrible. Would love more 1/18 - 1/14 kit options.
I don't know what to say about this Fil lol - I'm a builder...always have been...so if builds disappear so might I lol - I think this RTR craze has it's place but you just can't beat building a kit from the ground up. When you build it you know exactly what's gone into it and you know how to fix something if it goes wrong. RTR's skip a step for me. It's like flying somewhere vs a road trip. So much is missed when flying and with R/C there's a sense of pride and accomplishment when you build your own kit so when you don't it's like...cool...there it is. I'm big on this quote "It's not about the destination but the journey" - I can say that about so many things. Today, kids are missing out...there's something to be said for building a kit so you can understand the mechanics of it all.
@@poorboysrc Hey Fil.... I did leave my own comment on this video but RUclips seems to have removed it!!! 😧 This is happening a lot recently. Maybe the comment is still visible to you in the studio app? Long story short, totally agree with Fast Freddie on this one! 👍 👍
@@yodadarksideGreenHawksRCweird! I remember seeing your comment briefly and was going to comment on it but it’s gone lol - not sure why they would remove it?
@@FastFreddyRC At least someone got a chance to read it mate! 😂 Yeah buddy, I've had at least ten comments dissappear in the last week..... I think it even happened to one I left on your channel to! There were no community violations in them either, nothing offensive or strong language that would cause them to be removed!? They were all quite long though, maybe they don't like us leaving long comments now?! 😂 Very annoying though to say the least! 👍 👍
Very good arguments. And I have some RTRs in my collection. But I still like to build. Luckily I still can do it, because many gears're bone dry on the RTRs because of the grease and oil "embargo" on shipping. So,I'm hoping they bring out kit alternatives, too. And one thing that really annoyes me onnthis cars, is the painted body. I like to do my own design.
You haven’t been into RC very long have you. Mini’s were all the rage 25 years ago too. The mini Z has been out that long. Losi had the Mini B back then too, aling with the Mini LST. Traxxas has been doing 1/16 for 20+ years. Associated had the RC18T. I could go on.
The thing is the traxxas ( all the horizon stuff) is very expansie here in the Netherlands, for the same money can buy a a dt02 or dt03 with all the needed stuff and then learn about building it maintaining it and making it better. There are nice rtr's out there for a good price, but the spare parts are a thing to get your hands on of needed.
I think that smaller and lighter bashers are the way to go, as impact energy is speed times mass, so less mass means more durabilty, and with brushless motors they are fast enough to have fun. But I don't get why RTR, I want to build my RC models...
I think they will be here to stay but I think the hype will die down at some point. Now if they start releasing cheap kit versions that’s something I could definitely get behind!!!
For me its hard to get excited about all the new offroad kits because almost all of the tracks have closed locally. Im lucky to have the best RC drift track in the US about 25 minutes away but the drift/onroad kits seem to come out a bit slower and the RTRs are not the best options. These RTRs make it hard to resist! They're so small!
I enjoy building more than driving, but it’s hard to stomach paying for kits these days and then needing all the components. If I ran the cars more I might consider the Rllarlo but I’m still wondering about parts availability
As soon as you mentioned about building kits with your best friend back in the 80's or 90's it instantly took me back to me 1988 when I was 10 years old building my Kyosho Big Brute and my best friend was sitting at the other end of me at the dining room table building his Kyosho High Rider Corvette that we both got for Christmas...what a great time back in those days!! 🤘
@SoundStream101 YESSS!!! Remember that build? Of course you do, you'll never forget it! Those memories are some of my best, personally. I feel bad for kids that don't get to experience that for the sake of convenience.
Yeah today kids sit across from each other at a table texting each other! 😂. The funny thing is his brother was watching us build our kits and he got so jealous he had his Mom return all his Christmas presents and ended up getting the Big Boss because he liked ours so much, and that next weekend we sat at the same table helping him build his lol.. we were definitely the three coolest kids in town with 3 Kyoshos 😎😂. Best thing is I still got my big Brute!..and it runs!! 😂😂..
Quite diffucult theme indeed, but I like thinking about such stuff;) I started my RC carrier when I was 13 with TT01-R kit. It was a good experience to build it from the ground up and I learned a lot about the mechanical structures. On the other hand, when I gave a cheap RTR offroader to a 10 yo kid in neighborhood, he kept making mistakes in adjustments and breaking parts😂 He was just too young and did not know about RC at all. RTR is also attractive and easy to run, but in my opinion everyone who wants to enjoy RC as a proper hobby should take a look at the assemblly instruction manuals or open up the drivetrain to see how the chassis was built. With that knowledge, we will intuitively know what the car can do or not, so that we would not break the car that easily. It makes sense that RTR Mini bashers are on the rise nowadays, because they are more affordable and diverse. I personally will be Ok with them, as long as there are plenty of spare parts or 3rd party aftermarket. But it will not be easy for the makers to make profits. Even a japanese company with two stars seems not interested in that area, maybe found out not profitable already lol. I think it is up to people how seriously they want to investigate on RCs. RTR for casual users, and kit for rather more serious users. Nowadays we have so many more choises to spend our free time on. Therefore RC industry might have become relatively smaller (just my thought, from my viewpoint). So such assemble kits might be getting less attractive... Well, as a huge fan of the two-star company, I hope they release something entirely new!
I have recently acquired Mojave Grom and it is fantastic. Tamiya also has Tam Tech Gear models that are 1:14 I think but they are not available here in Europe.
Name just one professional racing series with RTR cars… Tamiya has its own racing series. The entry level of RC is might have switched to cheap (or not so cheap) RTRs. But as soon as You want to get into competition the market has almost zero RTRs to offer. Take a look at PC gaming. What serious is running the latest AAA game on a ready built system? But there‘s still a market for these. And btw: skateparks are maybe good for the show and klicks but bear the highest risk to destroy any RC car. So maybe they are the best marketing strategy to get You into buying new stuff….
Rtr are definitely beginners cars, that's why traxxas is so popular, but on the down side you don't learn anything about how it put together and how it should be. I'm 60 now, and prefer to assemble my kits.
@poorboysrc I'm a builder for sure I love it. I'm in the 2 of your 3 draws on Raffle so let's wait and see if not congrats to whoever wins enjoy your day it's time to crash out here.
I love to build the kits. But I've been doing this hobby for 25 years. But I'm getting older, but is it still fun on a smaller scale? Maybe it's better for me not to build on the smaller scales with all these very small parts.
Thats one big point to keep in mind. I had a hard time putting the wheel back on my Micro-B. My hands are huge, kinda shaky, and those tiny parts do not compute. 🤣
@poorboysrc I had recently purchased a TT-01 and because of the price point of making it an RTR vehicle... I decided to purchase an RTR and took all the parts I needed from it to install in the Tamiya. Price..160. Plus the Tamiya at 120. Still not cheap, but it's probably the cheapest Tamiya I've built.
I guess it all depends on what one wants out of an RC car. Personally I am not really interested in these smaller scale / lower price point bashers, or crawlers for that matter. Less opportunity for customizations and hop ups, which, I'll admit is something I look forward to as a part of the hobby. These will never replace the bigger higher quality brands in my estimation, however they certainly fill a bang for your buck hole that the bigger better brands leave just out of reach for many. Yeah, I said Bang for your buck hole. Cheers!
I'm new old to the hobby and I agree with alot of the things you say. Would love to get a kit and build it with my son BUT the price is just to high and also kidn of complicated. I have picked up some cheap RTR crawlers etc so that I can buy upgrades and build etc. IF there was a affordable kit to build with everything included for the same price I would go for that everyday. Or is there a all included 1/18 Buggy kit out there that I'm missing?
Yeah the price does start to add up. It's not bad once you're in, and you've got chargers, batteries, etc... I think Arrma made a Gorgon builders kit, which is 1/10 scale, but a great basher platform for you and your son to enjoy.
Wow! I've never heard of that little fella until now. I even went digging down the Tamiya rabbit hole looking for a mini, but only found their slot cars. 👍🏻
Certain appreciate the skillset learned from building kits. Build it, you lean how it works. I find kit making therapeutic both for mind and soul. But 100% can't be bothered when a rtr is the same price point. China brands all fun and games till you looking for spare parts 3 years down the road. Doubt XZ Racing 1000 buggy I get an A arm for when they plug a new version. My future is rtr.. Dont expect too much from tamiya only now they adding esc's that are lipo capable. And only because they had a shortage otherwise they back on tble's I rather not pay for as they get in the trash right away.
@@poorboysrc 18 turns brushed they can handle. Less turns they soon show the magic smoke. 17 turns old trinity with 20A current is too much for it. Connector desoldering themselves off the board.
Hey Fil interesting video. You know I've been meaning to make a video that is a bit similar. Not so much about the micro RC's and the value for money but just the amount you could spend on a Tamiya kit and all the bits you need compared to a 1/10 RTR like an Arrma. I think that there will always be that magic for men (usually men) of a certain age opening a Tamiya kit and going through the build process. Trouble is that usually the resulting RC is generally not as tough or high performance as something else you could get for the same money from another brand. I don't think that Tamiya will ever change that much though and will hang on to that kit market which might become a bit less popular but still be there. Also they have the retro appeal and character which others do not. The good thing is that at the moment there is a whole host of choice 😁
Yeah like the guys l love the kits and all the experiences it brings but l can't disagree Fil the value is tough to beat and these little rtr are tough! I genuinely think is an area tamiya should look at! Not for us old farts buying all the rere cars but for the longevity of the brand genuinely! l think in this busy and l will say inpatient world we live in nowadays people just want to go and play and bash! Nostalgia doesn't come into it for the new generation! We will always be loyal to tamiya but when you look at value it doesn't add up! I for one think it maybe time tamiya got in on the act and do a rtr basher as l am sure it will still have tamiya's usual pinch of magic dust that we all love and all over it! Very timely vid Fil, take it easy buddy 😉👍
Imagine a Tamiya RTR basher that was actually tough? I'd be all over it! They have the technology. The BBX is SERIOUSLY tough! And it's a step in the right direction for Tamiya. I'd love to see them on board!
I don’t think kits are ever going to go away that’s what started and created the hobby was putting together your very first kit as a kid together the Amazon market yes it’s flooded with these things right now but there plug in play I think there just for new beginners trying to get in to the hobby if they like it they like it and keep buying more upgrading them making them tougher stronger faster even better so I think there just trying to get new people in too the hobby with these plug n play pre built all ready comes with everything Rtrs it’s just a new market too appeal to people so they don’t have to go out and buy all the expensive electronics gear and won’t have to break the bank doing it I think it’s a great way too inteoduce the hobby if you like it keep doing it and get the kits and start going up in price on your own electronics what ever you desire wise.
I will respectfully disagree. Personally, I do not want anything to do with an rc that I didn't build myself. I do not like RTRs, though I can see why some may like them.
Here’s the problem. People get into the hobby buying an RTR. Then you go to a track and the old guys aren’t welcoming and snub new comers. If you want new and young people you have to welcome new people into the hobby.
Cost is huge these days! RC is supposed to be a relatively inexpensive hobby. Unfortunately, the north American economy is hurting and as such, people can't afford such things. It's a shame.
People who buy RTR are lazy 🤬 I wish you didn't turn your channel into RTR and promoting cheap chinese shit 👎 You need to bring back the kit's and the fun 🤟
@aviano72 70 kits in, and a handful of RTR's later and the people are angry! 🤔 This channel is expanding to a broader spectrum of RC's, that's all. I'll still have plenty of kits coming. Hornet EVO can't get here quick enough! 👍🏻

I'm the same Mark a kit, but less about at the moment.
I've seen guys our age pay for their motor leads to be soldered on. I thought that was wild! 🤣
Yep, no one can use their hands anymore, our ancestors are spinning in the graves wait till the world implodes what are we gonna do?
Lol!
@@poorboysrc LOL right?
100% Correct!
Within a few years these things are gone and forgotten. No spare parts, no customer support in the long term. Long live Tamiya kits.
Building with the kids is going to be great!
I’m 71, and I’m looking for a Tamiya kit, but am loving my Hypergo 16208! The toughest truck I’ve ever bashed, and it runs 3s. Yeah, it’s hard to resist these on Allieexpress
Never too old for a new Tamiya. What are you gonna get?
We all tend to forget that at the time we had our first kits there was ready to run cheaper car (less performant, sure, but there was). And you will never replace the joy of building a kit... That being said, big T is living on our nostalgy and it is a different world... But somehow kit building still exist, and will remain : you just have to look at all OpenRC project relying on 3D printing to understand that this part of the hobby is evolving as well towards something else...
Good points!
I think the rtr cars will be great sellers for a ling time, like you say. Its easy, but a true racer will want to build there car so they know it and understand it. Or like me, building the kit is a great deal of fun and thats why rtr has never botherd me. Half the fun is missing 👍
Half the fun is missing. Well said!
You can’t argue with the way the market is going. Most people do not have a grand to blow on a big scale Rc so definitely a high market demographic for the small stuff. The value is definitely there as well with all these new brands. Fun is fun, no matter how big the car is.
Fun os fun. Couldn't have said it better, myself! 👊🏼
Thanks for all the awesome feedback! And more importantly, thanks for using "meow" as often as possible in this post. 🤣 🐈 👊🏼
@@small.and.even.smaller pros and cons either way, right?! 👍🏻
@@poorboysrc Exactly. Depending on what someone is looking for.
In the world of today. You are correct, most take convenience over putting in a little effort. Personally I enjoy both world. There is nothing like building and learning the layout then making your own design on that body. But I can’t lie, the mini’s are a weird weakness. 😅Cheers!
Haha, they are becoming a weird weakness here, too! 😅
for myself, i'm a fan of both ideas..when i got into the hobby, i bought the RTR minus batteries and had many hours and days bashing and racing about..then when my dad passed away, i was looking for a RTR tractor/trailer combo which wasn't available except in Tamiya kit form and after that, i was hooked on building it myself! to each their own, and i accept everyone's decision, but for me at the moment, i like building it from the kit! cheers bud! see you in the next one!
Certainly, both kits and RTR's have their place. Thanks for watching, pal! 👍🏻
I would really love to see the small bashers in kit form just because I love to build. I will say though that the mini 1/24th scale crawlers are what got me back into the hobby.
Interesting to hear the mini crawlers got you back into the hobby. That's awesome!
I was only into 10 scale crawlers a bigger bashers but I got into mini crawlers & now I'm getting into mini bashers any company not getting into minis is bad business for sure. I purchased my Mojave from my local hobby shop. This is not a trend it's only getting bigger for sure. At first I didn't like the mini crawlers but they became so good & fun no way was I going to miss out on it.💯
I'm with ya! I said no to mini's until recently.
Building and keeping in shape is the love of the hobby and unfortunately something for us old guys (51) who had nothing else to do😀when young.
Today the world is going faster for the kids. Internet , ps 5 , VR , smartphones, …..
Personal i believe it an new beginning and it will not go away.
I will never sell my tamiya’s so they can see what it was in my time
Yeah, we're the old farts now, lol. Building, collecting, swearing when an e-clip fly's across the room! 😅
Wow, from Rlaarlo back to Tamiya. What made you go back?
We used to say RTR = Ready to rebuild. 😁
@@poorboysrc And upgrade!
The builds are a blast, gotta love 'em!
@@poorboysrc 🙂
The build experience is one of the best parts of the hobby, IMO! 😎
Got into a Mini Z 2wd car. It’s fast! Needs a couple upgrades to race, but I’m at about $125 all in, hard to beat!
Wow, you got a good deal!
The BBX was a glimmer of hope. Old skool look, modern design, great capabilities, and tough! Hopefully they continue along that creative path.
There's nothing like getting a big 1/8 4S monster truck ripping out there!
@@poorboysrc Yea, even the 1/10 can handle grass no problem though so they are great also. That new mjx 10208 is priced right at $200 for 4s
Lots of very good points! That $100 price point seems to be hot at the moment. 👍🏻
Cheers! 🍻
Tamiya Xb doesn't come with bearings either. I ❤ Tamiya!
Haha, nope! 🤦♂️
To me, building is the best part. But, I do love my arrma typhon grom. I hope that the kits never go away.
Agree on both fronts! 👍🏻
And Kyosho needs to join this 😂 i mean the more affordable and other scales. i love the miniZ, but my gosh its expensive.
But yeah, i do love building also, but sometimes i dont have the patience or time to do it. Great points bud!
Yeah that Mini-Z price tag is pretty hefty for what it is.
Haha, i was waiting for a Steel Panther comment! 😅
Thanks for being a part of the fun here, pal. Have an excellent day! 👍🏻
Thats definitely a pain! The Radiolink 20 model memory is a life saver!
The Losi Nascar is so good! Loud gearbox, but other than that, 10/10!
I have a few, the losi lmt gravedigger and it’s very very good.
the main thing is having a small garden minis allow running anytime where as the big stuff requires a car trip out. Which is nice but not all the time.
i do like building a kit from time to time 👍
Kit building is one of the best parts of the hobby, IMO.
I will stay with RTR for the smaller scales but for 1/10 and 1/14 semi it will stay kits for me. If the market shifts then it will shift to boutique kit makes for the dedicated kit builders.
RTR small scale is deffo the way to go. Those tiny parts are 🤯🤯🤯
And literally 24 hours after you make this video, Arrma release a line of mini brushless groms!!! You are the RC Prophet
@@frooglepete BWAHAHAHAHA!!! imma start an RC Cult while the gettin's good! 🤣🤣🤣
Associated's build manuals are notoriously poor.
Great comment fella.....

I do love building Tamiya kit, but there's one RTR that I'm excited about. The one that I'm going to win in around 8hrs time🤣
Hahahaha! I hope you win it!!! 🏆
You're a great builder, Dirk.
@@poorboysrc it's realxing for me😉
You haven’t been into RC very long have you. Mini’s were all the rage 25 years ago too. The mini Z has been out that long. Losi had the Mini B back then too, aling with the Mini LST. Traxxas has been doing 1/16 for 20+ years. Associated had the RC18T. I could go on.
Been into RC only 40 years or so.
Yeah the spare parts seem to be the real challenge with some of these lesser known brands. 👍🏻
Great time 4 everyone to enjoy some cool Rc vehicles 💯🍻😎
Absolutely! The more RC's, the better! 😎
I think that smaller and lighter bashers are the way to go, as impact energy is speed times mass, so less mass means more durabilty, and with brushless motors they are fast enough to have fun. But I don't get why RTR, I want to build my RC models...
The smaller size definitely = more durability.
I think they will be here to stay but I think the hype will die down at some point. Now if they start releasing cheap kit versions that’s something I could definitely get behind!!!
I'm with you, there! I find it interesting that Arrma can sell a well equipped 1/10 RTR MT for less than a Tamiya Clod Buster.
@@poorboysrc i completely agree, in my head you would think selling something unassembled would cost less

The Rlaaarlo Rog1 looks insane, I am going to get one for sure.
They look ridiculously good! 👍🏻
Quite diffucult theme indeed, but I like thinking about such stuff;)
I started my RC carrier when I was 13 with TT01-R kit.
It seems the younger generation is more interested in internet/virtual life v.s. assembling RC for 8 hours, driving, breaking, repairing.
I have recently acquired Mojave Grom and it is fantastic.
Tamiya also has Tam Tech Gear models that are 1:14 I think but they are not available here in Europe.
The Tamtech stuff is cool, but it's scarce, expensive, and fragile. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em! But I rarely see them here in Canada.
You can build a rtr, but you can't rtr a build kit. Lol. Tear down the rtr and rebuild, boom!
RTR = Ready to rebuild! 😅
Name just one professional racing series with RTR cars…
Tamiya has its own racing series.
Skate parks are stupid fun with an RC. Especially if you're an old skater that can't skate any more. Lol!
Rtr are definitely beginners cars, that's why traxxas is so popular, but on the down side you don't learn anything about how it put together and how it should be. I'm 60 now, and prefer to assemble my kits.
Something about assembling your own kit is so much more gratifying.
Wood like tamiya to get it's finger out!! 🏴 + Drop the ridiculous prices.
Big price for what you get.
I agree I love to build the car it makes it easier to understand it and do the mods you want.

Price point per performance is what I look for unless it's a kit form such as a Tamiya.
Which makes the most sense, as a consumer. I'm still shocked at what you can get RTR for $400 these days!
@poorboysrc
I had recently purchased a TT-01 and because of the price point of making it an RTR vehicle...
I decided to purchase an RTR and took all the parts I needed from it to install in the Tamiya.
Price..160. Plus the Tamiya at 120. Still not cheap, but it's probably the cheapest Tamiya I've built.
Old Boys RC!! The future is now old man. /S
🤣🤣🤣 👴 🧓
I guess it all depends on what one wants out of an RC car. Personally I am not really interested in these smaller scale / lower price point bashers, or crawlers for that matter. Less opportunity for customizations and hop ups, which, I'll admit is something I look forward to as a part of the hobby.
These will never replace the bigger higher quality brands in my estimation, however they certainly fill a bang for your buck hole that the bigger better brands leave just out of reach for many. Yeah, I said Bang for your buck hole.
Cheers!
Bwahahaha! That's too funny! That's your new channel slogan! 🤣🤣🤣
Cough ,cough Tamtech Gear Mini (GB-01S Chassis) 56714
I had 2 TBLE02S' go up in smoke after initial calibration. 🤦♂️
I'd love to see your video with your take on it, Pete.
Small scale 2wd bashers no thanks 👍 1/10th is not much more expensive.
Thanks for watching!
Kit building go away is a travesty but I get it. Not everyone has the time needed to build one from scratch. I can’t stand RTR.
Hopefully we'll always have our Tamiyas and Kyoshos to assemble. 👍🏻
Yeah, that's a very good point. These budget TRT's are a great way to get inti the hobby on the cheap.
Hey Buddy. What is next years car? lol
It's..... Top Secret! 😁😁😁
Second.....😢
Haha, it's a tight race for first!
I will respectfully disagree. Personally, I do not want anything to do with an rc that I didn't build myself. I do not like RTRs, though I can see why some may like them.
Building a kit is certainly super satisfying!
Tamiya 'ta mi ya.
Not tam iya
Not this again! 😅
@@poorboysrc no hate intended. Just seemed like you could take a joke better than others
Love building kits but sometimes RTR gives you a break from building.
Excellent video Fil!
You are quik on the draw man. I got beat again.
@@Paul__FC Was on my phone checking for updates when PBRC new vid came on. 😆
Agree on both fronts, my man!
Here’s the problem. People get into the hobby buying an RTR. Then you go to a track and the old guys aren’t welcoming and snub new comers. If you want new and young people you have to welcome new people into the hobby.
Always, always, ALWAYS have to welcome the noobs. We've all been there. RC racing can be tough on noobs for some reason.
Dose red cat make oneim new to the hobby
They make a great mini crawler.
Cost is the #1 reason, period!
Racing is dead due to costs.
Large high S bashers are next.
Cost is huge these days! RC is supposed to be a relatively inexpensive hobby. Unfortunately, the north American economy is hurting and as such, people can't afford such things. It's a shame.
Tamiya would be a good choice to get beginners to appreciate kits, if they didn't make them mediocre out of fhe box.
The bar is risen so high these days. Plus, RUclipsrs thrashing RC's and building them up certainly doesn't help Tamiya's case at all.
As a whole, RTR's suck.
Ready to rebuild.
@@poorboysrc LOL! Yup...😉
Ab si ma.
What did I say? Abisma? 🤦♂️
People who buy RTR are lazy 🤬
I wish you didn't turn your channel into RTR and promoting cheap chinese shit 👎
You need to bring back the kit's and the fun 🤟
@aviano72 70 kits in, and a handful of RTR's later and the people are angry! 🤔 This channel is expanding to a broader spectrum of RC's, that's all. I'll still have plenty of kits coming. Hornet EVO can't get here quick enough! 👍🏻
