Fun fact: Pixar movies reference Apple a lot like iMac G3 in Toy Story, Apple logo in Cars, Mac boot chime and iPod in Wall-E, iPhone 5s on Ralph breaks the internet. And so does Apple uses Toy Story characters on Apple Watch
My cousin and I saw Toy Story 4 in the movie theater, and when it ended he knew I was a fan of Apple so he mentioned how Steve Jobs made Pixar possible. I had no idea at all about Steve’s involvement and I didn’t believe him. After a quick search on my iPhone, I discovered it was all real. A movie production company I grew up loving and continuing to love in adulthood was actually another business reinvented thanks to not only creative computing, but also Steve’s intuition that technology married to humanities and arts was a formula for magic.
What’s even more interesting is the book Creativity Inc by Catmull. They always said Steve used to love popping down there and he was a different guy at Pixar, very relaxed
Lucas needed to generate some cash due to his pending divorce. He originally wanted $30 mil for the company that would become Pixar. Jobs waited him out and paid &10 million. One investment that paid off quite well eh?😀
When I was young, I was so surprised to learn that Steve actually kickstarted, funded, and led Pixar after getting fired at Apple and starting Next. I never would have guessed that the guy who mad Apple successful was also part of what made Pixar successful. What's even more surprising was that Pixar isn't even a consumer goods company. They're not even a services company. The only had the technology and didn't know what to do with it. It's a good thing Steve allowed Lasseter and the rest of the team to create animated stories. I remember reading somewhere that Steve did that because he knew that's what the team was passionate about doing. So he put in even more money to help them get started on making animated shorts. Even then, Steve understood the potential of people's passions and crazy ideas. What I'm interested in now is how Steve's relationship with Disney went before, during, and after their partnership and acquisition. I remember reading Michael Eisner and Steve constantly butt heads around the turn of century. This in part how Eisner lost faith in Pixar despite raking in so much revenue for Disney. But when Eisner was finally ousted, thanks to Roy E. Disney and his team, Bob Iger was able to right the wrongs Eisner made in his tenure as CEO. That included repairing the rift between Pixar and Disney and, by extension, between Steve and Disney. Since being instated as Apple's CEO, Steve became busy in running the company what with all the success of the iMac, iPod, and macOS X. He didn't have much time for Pixar. So he knew it would be a good deal to sell it to Disney instead. The deal would be announced around early January 2006, well into the development of the iPhone and, unfortunately, well into the development of Steve's pancreatic cancer. The day Steve and Bob were to announce the acquisition deal, Steve took Bob aside and revealed theat his cancer had come back. He did this as a final warning to Bob, giving him one last chance to back out from the deal. Fortunately, Bob was determined to see it through. I'm always so interested in Steve's realtionship with Pixar and Disney. There's so much history between them. We've barely even scratched the surface. I also believe that Walt Disney and Steve Jobs were similar in a lot of ways in terms of being a leader, company owner, and visionary. Both died at their prime.
I suggest the book "Creativity, Inc" if you want some more detail. It is a very good book, one of the best business (or any kind) books I've ever read.
Steve Jobs' life is a beacon of hope to all of us out here struggling through bad times. 👏 As it's often said, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". What a man.
I’ve always thought about the fact that, casually, Apple was founded on April 1st. It was definitely no joke though. Pixar is another brilliant company Jobs contributed to.
It's funny how people are discreting Jobs with how he is just a Marketing person and doesn't know how to Engineer, Develop or Design. However I can't image our lives without his vision and sheer focus. He really connected a lot of dots for us. I absolutely believe that the computers wasn't going to have pretty fonts if it wasn't for him taking those Calligraphy classes at Reed College.
Steve Jobs was really an incredible mind, anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know what they are talking about. Even if you don’t like Apple, you gotta give some credit to a guy who: 1. Made the iPhone, which revolutionized the world 2. The iPad, really the only good tablet at the time 3. Founded two companies in what was considered to be his “Dark days” 4. Stuff I can’t think right now (reply below other things)
Steve Jobs had a great legacy in animation. Therefore this kind of legacy should reflect in Apple products like Mac. However this wasn’t necessary the case at least in the last decade. And I hope that with Apple Silicon, with the performance and efficiency it brings this will begin to change.
Ed Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith founded Pixar, not Steve Jobs. And it was named Pixar before Jobs became involved. Jobs was the investor, but poured so much money into the company to keep it alive that he ended up owning it. But he was not a founder. And John Lasseter was not a founder either!
It’s worth noting that George Lucas was also in the bitter end of a nasty divorce and on top of that being the independent filmmaker he was, wasn’t making a whole lot off his independent company he spent so long setting up to do Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Willow. He needed some cash because his movies were too expensive, and too far and in between to turn a profit. Funny though he still refers to Pixar as “my company”
It’s important to point out that Pixar did not use their own tech to create toy story. They used Sun sparcstations for toy story 1 and SGI computers for toy story 2. They always used the bleeding edge computer systems and weren’t afraid to spend money to do so.
I didn't know til maybe a few years ago that Steve Jobs was the first CEO of Pixar, and when I found that out, it both blew my mind, and also made me go "Well, I guess I'm not surprised". But man talk about a great resume to have. Not only did you start Apple, the most profitable tech company in the business, but you also co-founded Pixar, one of if not the most successful animation studios in the world; the very company that time and time again has brought Disney out of it's own self imposed Dark Age. Like damn, next you're gonna tell me he cured cancer through cunnilingis. (I'm obviously overexaggerating, I know the man wasn't perfect or a God, but talk about accomplishments)
Ever since I was a kid and I saw Toy Story in the theater, I was a fan of Pixar. Then when I learned about Steve Jobs, I got interested in Apple, a brand I kind of ignored because I was a broke boy. Now after using Apple products for the last decade and watching Pixar movies, especially the Toy Story movies and The Incredibles movies, I am a Pixar and Apple stan!
I think it's important to stress just how much Jobs believed in the PIXAR animation team, they were not profitable for a long time, a lot longer than any other entrepreneur would've been able to handle, but Jobs stuck it through because he knew the films they were making were special
Actually if you incorporate Microsoft motion scanner and animation each drawing object with your own motion then a hand full group less than 20 person with voice , writers , painters musician and computers can create hundred million dollars movies like toy r us like frozen ect or tinker Bell and pro fit more any any other film company before from Columbia to twenty century or TriStar ect
I think we pander to Steve Jobs too much. Yes, the man was a genius, and yes, he was integral in the Pixar story, but he certainly didn't "start" Pixar. Ed Catmull, the actual founder of Pixar, explained it all in his book "Creativity Inc." He'd wanted to make a computer-animated movie since he was a young kid. Through the book you can see that computer-animated cartoons weren't a matter of "if", but "when." Ed, John Lasseter, and Steve Jobs just happened to be at the helm at the time. And Job's main input, actually his biggest contribution, was financial aid, and choice advice on when Pixar went public ( before the Disney deal, etc). Again, no disrespect to the man, but the Pixar story LARGELY happened because of the tenaciousness of Ed Catmull and John Lasseter, not Steve Jobs.
it was created Pixar by George Lucas and sold it and bought by Steve jobs who saved it and from a small computer division to a global giant by Disney today is unbelievable watching movies like Toy story
