Sorin, these CPU's are bent almost everytime you remove them from PCB, they will straighten while soldering though, if they dont some guys use 0.05mm larger balls to mitigate this. The Dosdude has shown this and still used the CPU without problems despite it being bent after desoldering.
And you need a better Tools for doing that thing yes? like - BGA Rework Station -
for Him,its impossible by only use Hot Air Station.
I mean IR station is best way to go for sure, skill can proove a lot is possible even with hotair (not me) haha
The chip is fine, all chips of this form are bent, it straightens out when soldering from the heat. The silicon and the substrate have different thermal expansion coefficients.
However, if you are thinking to replace a cpu or a pch on a lenovo motherboard, then you must think twice. Lenovo boards have the chips glued to the board differently than every other brand boards, the black glue sits between the chip and the board, and it is very hard to remove the bga from the board without damaging the soldering mask and pads, because some of them come of together with the glue which is under the bga chip. If the soldering mask and pads are damaged then you will have even more additional restoration work before you can solder anything back.
Also, keep in mind that when you heat the chips on Lenovo board, the adjacent chips heat very easily too (ram chips in this case), and you will have to reball them also, because the solder balls when they become liquid will shoot out from the glue because of expansion, and there is 99% chance that some of the solder will make a short under the chip. It is a common problem when working with Lenovo board bga chips, a lot of the time you will have to remove not only one chip that you are working on, but also others near it, in this case RAM. You will understand why when you try it.
Good information 👍, I have a question , or more rather a suggestion. To avoid the issue of rams shorting out , don't you think its a good idea to cover the rams with a thermal tape that acts as a heat sink. Basically a heat shield that will drag heat away from the board? I know some heat will dissipate thru the pcb to the rams but I doubt if that's enough to heat and melt the rams.
I clamped against a piece of metal on each side of one and heated it up and let it cool. It straightened out and worked! Thanks for the video.
It's normal for the chip-in to be a little crooked. Thin processors are tilted upside down when removed from the motherboard. will be corrected during soldering. this is the only risky part: it should not exceed the heat value as soon as it is soldered. If a little too much heat is applied, the chip will warp again. and all four sides will stay in the air. so warping is not a problem. don't try to bend it with your hand by giving heat, the crystal silicon will crack.

8:32 you can solder this, as textolite have diferent expansion on heat than CPU DICE, it will straighten->solder->and everything will be ok :)

It look like cpu package go through thermal shock experiment and turn into potato chip. Perhaps bake cpu for a while at 100C in oven and cool slowly might return to normal flat plane. We see this all the time at Intel when doing thermal shock experiments.

I recently bought a laptop, one thing was very clear to me. I wanted a laptop in which the cpu is in a socket just in case in the future I had to change it, the same in the ram memory, like the laptops that are sold today, all this is soldered on the motherboard in the end I bought it a second-hand laptop Lenovo T440p i7 16Gb of ram, magnesium chassis and at a very very very good price

Ca, soluție de rezolvare la acest cpu este încercarea de a încălzi placa pe o suprafață plană de sticla sau ceramică după care aplicați o greutate pe el încălzit până la răcire. O altă solutie ar fi să-l presați înainte de rebaling cu o mică presă simetrica într-un punct... dar nu prea merită aceste eforturi... Scrieți vanzatorului, dații dovada și sa trimită alt cpu sau banii înapoi. Sărbători cu bine! ❤❤❤
You can try to apply solder to the pads in the middle of the cpu field on the board and clean the outer pads. It may work...
Good Idea but in the middle is data line.... If the problems is in the corner its ok its minee ( - ) its has a lot pins - but in the centre its problem
You can solder it if you print solder paste on the board. Even a new thin bga chip dosen't always come out straight from factory.
How did you got on with them solar panels I'm thinking of powering my workshop with them plus wind turbine!
1)Remove solder balls with solder wick to have flat pads, 2)then put cpu on flat surface and heat cpu in a range 100-230c degrees,
3)and then put at the top of cpu a silicon mate and apply the force by your finger. 4)Then wait to cool down, keeping the finger on,
5) then check if is straight 6) and then do reballing using 0.4/0.45mm solderballs and stencil for i5-8250u

Ok that fine, but he paid 150 or so pound for this chip, it's supposed to be good, what you wrote is if he desoldered it from parts board, but in this case he probably needs to return it for refund

Cpu can be good. It doesn't looks like overheated one. I can't see the "popcorn" effect on the green surface.
I see the suggestions about re-modelling the cpu and then fit. It’s not worth it Sorin. What if the chip is faulty anyway. The grief of these repairs does not out-way the rewards.
I thought that too but i usually work with metal but isnt it likely the chip will crack or deform even worse and if thats an possibilty will Sorin get his money back after the chip's suffered this abuse?...I doubt it in the circumstances he would be better safe than sorry so simply post the chip back and request replacement or refund as the supplier must know his goods come with this potential and he has an duty to honour his pledge in respect to goods fit as serviceable....
Good video, and great solution, deciding its not worth to solder it, and just ship it back for refund. Lots of people would make mistake and just solder it in and not working , then no refund, cuz person would say you overheat it while soldering it or something.... Probably...

The cpu is a pull the chips warp like that when you pull them from a board.
Or could he warped due to the reball of the cpu.
There is a tolerance on flatness, but that is something like 10x over that. I looked up the datasheet for a 4th gen PCH years ago, and I think it was maybe 0.25mm - look for a geometric tolerance icon box graphic - , so there is no way a 0.5mm ball is going to reach the MB 1.0mm away. I know how to straighten a car's cylinder head, but not a chip - lol -.

this bending in normal for intel u series chip's. I don't know if you can solder it with hot air but this can be done with bga soldering station
Can you not put something like some nuts on top to use as weights ?
those are refurbised... maybe a lot of heat were absorbed during desoldering causing the chip bent
He probably baked it at 500°c in china to get it off quickly. When I bake off chips for sentimental values not for reuse at 500°c they don't even look like that so it's funny.
Some sellers buy these binned rejects straight from Intel.
Ive gotten a few of those chips, its a gamble def, but sometimes i dont have any choice to give it a go sadly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt xD
With enough heat and a little pressure in the center of the chip, while soldering, I think it may work. What do you have to lose at this point!
If you press the chip the balls will short. It needs to be straight 100%.

He won't charge the customer for the failed attempt. He also lose money for buying the defective chip.

Maybe put the chip in a vice and bake it for 20-30 min. Maybe at 100°C but I am not sure and I don't know how to solder those chips.
It might be possible to solder it with a special vice but the one I am imagining does not exist.
6 to 8 Vacuum suction cups and something to push on the CPU die maybe or another cup. They need to be automatically or manually height adjustable and a camera / detector that measures the flatness.

Problem be when you try to desolder old cpu. Lenovo not let you remove old cpu properly. Lenovo under cpu glue make cpu desolder a nightmare. If you solder been in use cpu, you cpu not work, because cpu have bootlocker lock in pch
you need to put some weight on the top of it, when you solder it it will get straight because of the heat
it will be straight with the temperature when you solder it, (eveytime when i make a reballing for cpu it will be like this)
bga on lenovo is not easy because of the black epoxy be careful when you remove the cpu

They are all like that they work just fine you wont get refund since thats how they are all Bend. They go straight when getting heated from rework station just give Them atleast 7min around 230c. I solder 1 each day works fine

This type of cpu specially rework only Infrared PDR or JOVY rework machines.... This chip aways bend... Rework profile most important... Reflow time need increase, CPU pcb Automatically Straight up then Soldered on the Motherboard... This chip modeled design has been created by Intel....
Some time reflow timing CPU core up put the round Coin...

This type of soldering can only be done with very good equipment (by very good I mean a 25k automatic soldering machine with a minimum cost) and having a really new CPU (it's the most difficult thing)

True.....but repetitive heating and cooling of the board will probably end up fracturing one or two balls, over time, and Sorin has to give a warranty with his repairs. Probably end up coming back unless the buyer agrees to take the risk and no warranty given. If it was his own board, i am sure he would do as you say....but on a warrantied job? I wouldn't.
@@englishrupe01 yes but heat can also make cpu move and change it's shape, so the bend should theoreticaly disappear. Also it will be held in place under pressure with cooler. But for sure not as warranty repair.
Sorin obviously you just have to bend the motherboard too.
They are bent even when soldered at factory, because it doesn't have a steel band around the die like newer CPUs do.
Intel recommends drying them at 100C for 24 hours I think(not sure) before soldering too as they become pringles chips when you try to actually solder them.
Hi, no they are not bent at the factory , you are wrong.
If proper tools, like preheater and infrared soldering station with correct temperature profile are used, these CPUs will not get bent. The result we see here is what you will get if you overheat the motherboard and the CPU during the removal. Whoever removed this CPU from the MB did not bother to do it correctly.
@@markkay8117 nope I have seen it. In assembly line they print solder paste, to recoup the difference. The same mangled chip came out straight after reflow oven, and tested fine by testing jig, and ageing process.
@@markkay8117 they aren't as bent, as they are kept in proper conditions, but even still, 6th to 8th gen intel CPUs are bending too much even with precise factory control and proper storage conditions, because substrate material is so thin (compare it with, idk, ivybridge).

Might work but there's a also risk of you remove the clamp and there will be broken traces in the middle
@Theriddler possible but I highly doubt it. I've worked in electronics mainly pcb for 20years and I've seen much worse and it still work. My last job was for teledyne defence and the handling of some of their boards by other staff was shocking. So clamping it or between some heavy books, anything flat will work. Yes it's a cpu but still on pcb. So warming it and flattening will work. Gently does it.

Reball with slight bigger balls and it will probably make good contact at melting point. This is a common problem..

In fairness having an FR4 substrate is kind of a dumb design for a chiplet. 🤦♂ that said, i've bought a lot of things from China. Every now and again i'll get burned and the marketplace doesn't do anything to help us. I do get mostly good stuff though.
If you heat the mother board from the back it bends the wrong way . Don’t try it it’s just a faulty bend chipset

After the last episode then this is unbelivable and dont tell me the seller doesnt apprieciate the warp in the product but if it is as you say it is with chips coming off motherboards and not the factory production line then the seller cannot possibly be ignorant of the potential for failure with cracked or warped CPUs and also that an days work is down the drain with an struggle to get your money back and whats worse you still dont have an serviceable chip...is the customer watching this? then if so is it really Sorins job chasing up suppliers i thought he repaired computers and electronics seems he's got some other task on his hands..!! I dlatego lutowanie tych konstrukcji gdzie PCH i procesor jest w jednym jest mega ciężkie. Intel ma na to patent i nie powie za milion lat nawet jak to lutować. Mają specjalna procedurę. To po to aby. Od naprawiać sprzętu. Masz kupić nowy.
I dlatego nowe procesory są okute w stalowe ramki zapobiegające efektowi banana?
@@ukowzan Nie do końca. One tak naprawdę nie pomagają w procesie lutowania. Spróbuj kiedyś wylutować to zobaczysz co się stanie. Pomimo ramki będzie banan.
najgorsze są te energooszczędne z TDP 7W np. i7-7Y75, 1515 kulek o wielkości 0,25mm totalna masakra, przeszczep takiego procka graniczy niemal z cudem

From the comments above, I have observed that a team of individuals who replaces the CPU have had bent CPUs which have worked after soldering.
Some who have never tried are givng suggestions about straightening the chip with some pressure or heat.
From Sorin explaination n his expertism I assume strait or non bent chip exist n they can make work easier.
For the bent chip, i support using larger balls rather and or flatteing using sandpaper rather than using heat. Remember if it flannens because of heat. It wil bend again when the heat is not there. And that will cause issues.
When it has the thickness of a potato chip no wonder it's bend.
that's why I don't change the cpu. too much of a waste of time. time is very important for us and the work rate after cpu replacement is very low. if it's not a really expensive laptop it's not worth the hassle.

also humanity: let's solder cpus and ram directly to the mainboard, so if anthing breaks, the whole board is going to e-waste bc producing e-waste is sooo environmently friendly 🙄
But Sorin, those are mostly NOT salvaged CPUs from boards. In China, when there's a PCB manufacturer finished with producing a motherboard series, the remaining stock of CPUs, especially the B- and C-ware is then sold to dealers, that sell those to the public.
even during production there's always a way, some chips get out of factories and end on dealers, that then sells the stuff on ebay and alibaba...

When you will desolder original CPU from faulty motherboard it will be bent the same after cooldown 😂🎉
If the CPU is truly new and well preserved and you use a truly professional soldering machine (for this type of component I prefer air instead of infrared), soldering will not have problems. I recommend checking all connections with x-ray. If you have to use a CPU already soldered onto the donor board, remove it with a precision CNC. First remove the CPU and the part of the card underneath, cutting a rectangle slightly larger than the chip and then secure everything with the CNC vice. There are no other ways because if you remove the CPU hot it becomes distorted.
There is no sense to do it. You need to buy this precision CNC and IR-soldering station and then spend a lot of time removing the donor processor, desoldering the old one, and soldering the donor one. It is much more profitable to return such a laptop as "no fix" and work on not the hopeless case.
@@user-vp7ri7yl6y there are cards that cost over 1000 euros, not to mention dedicated products where the price goes up considerably. It depends on how much you pay for the board to be repaired. In China, 80% of boards sold as new are actually boards that have had a BGA chip replaced. Nowadays if you don't have good equipment you can't be a repairer/seller like a few years ago. In reality, this type of intervention is not dedicated to the end user but to the spare parts market. I'll give you an example: I purchased an Asus Rog laptop late 2022 for 200 euros because the warranty was not accepted, the CPU is a 13th i9. Cost of the card 980 euros cost of the CPU 600 euros cost of a card from which to take the CPU 250 euros, even if it takes you two days (in reality it's a 5-6 hour job) the profit is proportionate to the work. I forgot to say that there are BGA welding machines that cost up to 50,000 euros and more, why buy them?

Make the seller pay you back so he/she lost the transport costs, without sending back. Clearly seller at fault so if he wants it back he can pay for the return. Only way to get rid of this kind of sellers is making them pay.
