If you have room this year, you might want to try the Murasaki. It has purple skin and white flesh and has very good flavor. I found some at the local asian market and grew my slips like you do. I am near Shreveport
@@millsfamilygardening2634 yes sweet potatos can grow here, we moved to a new house and finally after many years i can grow what i want, i am preparing to grow flowers first thing you can see the flower pots i have on my channel
Love your channel. I think time lapses in the shorts would be cool. Also if you talked about benefits youve noticed about certain foods that the video is about would be cool too.
Yes, we've mixed in a couple of mentions here and there of the health benefits in certain vegetables. Maybe we can do a little more. It's definitely beneficial for our family to eat what we grow. And when we get more time, we'd like to work on some new shorts. That's a good idea for time lapses. It's hard to do as much as we'd like to do when we have three young kids to take care of.
I tried the paper towel method, and so far all I've seen after a few weeks is a white mold on my sweet potato, and the tuber is squishy wherever the mold is. I kept the Ziploc bag as empty of air as possible, and changed the wet towel once when I saw the mold starting. I did see some tiny bumps on the bottom side that looks like it's trying to start roots, but so far no slips showing up. Any ideas?
It's possible the sweet potato hasn't aged enough yet. You can buy new sweet potatoes, keep them in the pantry for about three weeks, and try again. The zip lock bag needs to be on top of a fridge or some warm place. It should work.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 thanks! I had basically just bought it and stuck it in the bag that night, so I bet you're right. There was plenty of warmth and moisture, so maybe I'll try holding it in the pantry a while next time. Thankfully I do have one cut section that has been slipping in some soil for a few weeks. Took me a while to get them dialed in, but they're finally getting taller and looking healthy once I put it all in a humidity dome setup.
I've never tried it, but I'm pretty sure it won't work. When potatoes sit in water, they normally start rotting. That is why it's important to store potatoes dry.
I left regular potatoes out in a Sunny window and within 2 weeks they started putting out sprouts all over and I potted them up. So I suggest wash the potatoes very good. If bought from store they have chemicals that don’t let them sprout. But if you wash them very well it will be fine. Then just set it out on a plate in a sunny window. No water no soil nothing.
The only way to stop them is to put hardware cloth on the bottom of the raised bed, and then fill it up with soil. I'm sorry, those moles can do a lot of damage in the garden.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 I did that last yr. They came down through the top this time. Can't find a chemical that keeps them away. I am building cages to try in the beds this yr.
@@waynemcintyre8571 Moles usually eat only worms and grubs. It might be voles that eat your sweet potatoes. In that situation, I'd cover the raised bed with a hardware cloth on top and keep it down with bricks or something heavy that they can't move.
Never seen the paper towel method done with sweet potatoes before, definitely worth a try👍
Sweet potatoes love the paper towel method.
Great video. Answered all my questions

Is it a Japanese variety? I'll be looking out for it. Thanks for telling us about it.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 It has a Japanese name but was developed at LSU just like Beuregard and several others

I covered my sweet potato bed during our recent light freeze but the leaves were hurt badly. Will they continue to grow or should I harvest now?
I'd leave them in the ground for now. It's warmed up again.

Can you do the paper towel method with normal potatoes?

Must be voles then. I got over 20 on glue traps last summer. Hardware Cloth is going down this summer. Thanks.
