Mills Family Gardening
Добавлен 28 июн 2015
We fell in love with gardening in 2010 after we watched a documentary about conventional food, and realized that we needed to have our own organic garden. We didn't know what we were doing and failed a lot. Reading a lot of articles online and watching videos about gardening gave us a better idea of how to improve. And we are still in the process of learning. So what started as an effort to simply eat clean, organic food, turned into an exciting adventure of discovering the secrets and wonders of nature and being constantly in awe of how balanced our ecosystem is, that God thoughtfully designed for us.
What to do with overgrown OKRA plants
We recently left our okra plants neglected for about two weeks in late summer, and many of the pods became hard and overgrown. This video explains three options you can take when this happens, with one being to let them continue to harden and go to seed. Prudent gardeners always need seeds for the next growing season. We also compare which variety has performed the best despite being neglected, as we've grown Clemson spineless and burgundy. If you'd like to see a time lapse video on how to grow okra from start to finish, check out our video at this link:

Montreal Botanical Garden Tour (2024)
Просмотров 22621 день назад
We recently got to take a trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and one of the highlights was a tour of their Botanical Garden (Jardin botanique de Montréal). It's located near a number of great attractions that we didn't get a chance to visit. Overall, it was great to see many plants and flowers that don't grow as well in our native Texas, or perhaps grow only in the shade in Texas to avoid the he...
How to grow MELONS in containers (START TO FINISH)
Просмотров 216Месяц назад
We experimented this year with growing melons in containers, which is generally more difficult than in the ground because it's harder to keep them well watered. We live in North Texas, Zone 8a, so our summers are quite hot. This video explains every step of the process - growing, fertilizing, watering, protecting your melons from pests, and harvesting. The melons we grew were the Kajari variety...
How to HARVEST and STORE ONIONS
Просмотров 1672 месяца назад
We love growing onions here in North Texas, Zone 8a. We grow short-day variety onions, which don't store as long as other varieties. This video explains the three signs to look for to know when it's time to harvest. Then we explain how to store your onions for later consumption - especially if you don't have a root cellar.
Growing HOLLYHOCKS from SEED to FLOWERS (time lapse)
Просмотров 4662 месяца назад
Hollyhocks have been a beautiful addition to our backyard garden, and they also add a nice vertical element to our array of flowers. We've grown a variety of colors in our North Texas garden, Zone 8a. Hollyhocks can grow in Zones 3 through 9. This video takes you through how we grow them from seed to full blossom and then harvesting seeds. We also get some "volunteer" plants from seeds that hav...
FREE fertilizer for TREES
Просмотров 4232 месяца назад
We're having an abundant harvest from our peach tree, despite not fertilizing it for a year and a half. Our secret is compost tea, where we water flowerpots with compost, and the tea drains through to our trees. This video shows you how to make quality compost to feed your trees and eventually provide rich potting soil for other plants.
Growing ONIONS from seed (time lapse)
Просмотров 7643 месяца назад
We recently harvested a crop of onions we grew from seed in our North Texas garden. In our warm climate, we grow short-day variety onions. This variety doesn't store as long as long-day onions. This video takes you from start to finish - planting seeds, growing in containers, transplanting, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, and storing. We hope it encourages you to grow more onions.
Growing TOMATOES in partial SHADE
Просмотров 1 тыс.3 месяца назад
We've grown tomatoes in an in-ground bed for years. But as our backyard trees have grown, more of our tomato bed gets partial shade. The shade, combined with a very wet spring here in North Texas, have hindered development in some of our tomato varieties. This video shows what varieties have still produced well in the shade, so hopefully you'll know what to grow in partial shade if you're not a...

I live in Austin area. Cantaloupe did extremely well for me in the heat of summer this year. Thanks for the garden tour in the heat!😊
Cantaloupe loves Texas heat. Thank you!
Thank you, you are a life saver.
Thank you!
What the name of this sunflower
I planted a few varieties, and don't remember which one that was. I'm sorry.
It has to be a deeper hole. Flies will be attracted to it and dig their way in.
A deeper hole will work, too.
What o you think about using women's leggings?
Animals will chew through them easily.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 Have you tried them yourself? Someone said that the Amish use them effectively
Drip tape is the way to go in long areas. I use the 1/4 =" to individual plants and the 1/4" "brown" (every 6") in containers. I ALWAYS plant too closely and by July start having to move plants so the drip tape holes are 12" apart. Soaking has never lasted long for me and frankly was inefficient and ineffective.
@smb-zf9bd I plan to try drip tape sometime soon, hopefully. Thank you!
@@millsfamilygardening2634 One word of warning. They really only work well when they can be laid out straight. I have a 30' "coil" that works but it won't do corners or sharp turns. And make sure holes are visible (I first had mine in the dirt and they got stuck with dirt). Good luck
@smb-zf9bd Ah, good to know! Thank you for the helpful tips!
Here in the northeastern USA, I have been growing my Roma tomatoes in containers for many years. I really enjoyed your tips. This year I planted 6 plants and I have had the biggest harvest I’ve ever had. I canned an awful lot of sauce, salsa, and gave away a lot of tomatoes!
I love Roma tomatoes. They are highly productive and resilient plants. It's wonderful that you've had so much success with them. Thank you!
Very informative and a pleasure to watch, unlike so many others who treat viewers like idiots! Thanks for passing on your knowledge, cheers
Aww, thank you so much!
show us your melons
Okra is my favorite vegetable to eat & now grow.
We love okra! Thank you!
Okra is one of the easiest plants i found to grow in my zone 10. It thrives in the heat and sun light. Mine grew to about 7 feet then when it slowed down to almost no more production i trimmed them down to just about 6 inches tall and new growth sprouted pretty soon and i let them grow for another harvest. How did the rest of your garden do during your vacation? Thanks for the video Dina !
We love okra, especially Burgundy okra. It's extremely productive! The garden survived because of drip irrigation. I still need to plant fall vegetables. Thank you!
Очень информативно о таком необычном растении, как окра. Очень полезный продукт, хотя вкус на любителя 😊
Спасибо большое! Мы очень любим окру.
🎉thanks
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I've watched a Dozen videos from famous RUclipsrs. This is the best explanation I've seen. thank you
Thank you so much!
Along with clogging and failing, soaker tubing can come with pin sized holes. As a result, it sprays water where you don't want it to go. I have had drip lines in the ground for over a year with temperatures below freezing. They are working well for me.
I prefer drip lines, too. Thank you!
Lol, welcome to Montreal
Thank you! We had a great time there.
Спасибо за причастие к красоте. Розовый лотос, это натуральный цветок или бутафория?
Это натуральный цветок. Остальные лилии тоже натуральные. Спасибо!
Doule the size of your container. Your romas look terrible. A healthy roma has 4 times the fruit you do. Do the opposite of what this pretty lady does.
Great experiment and you helped me determine how I want to try composting at home. I want to have about 10 x 10 area to compost. But I also want a "staging area" next to my main rich compost area. This box idea would work perfectly, and I could rake these over as they mature, turn everything at that point, then wait for the next batch to mature and rake over again. It's a way of mimicking the stages a large scale composter would use. Or at least the best I can do with the space I have. I am looking for a longer maturation stage with my compost, probably close to two years. My second trick will be to use this box compost as "in garden compost" at the end of the year, and either leave one of my gardens dormant for next season, or just try planting the next season to see if it breaks down enough to supply all the right nutrients year after year.
That's a great idea! Composting in cardboard boxes can certainly be done in several smaller batches. That's why I like this method. I hope your plan works well. Thank you!
what brand of stapler is that and where did you buy it?
It's a Maped stapler. Any regular stapler for paper will work.
So it took about 4 months?
It normally takes less than four months to start harvesting cowpeas.
Thank you! From Baudette Minnesota, zone 3b
Thank you!
This was so incredibly helpful, thank you!
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you!
That hole in the napkin would have bothered me thank you for even pointing out the small stuff. Much love ❤
I know exactly what you mean. Haha. Thank you! ❤️

😀❤️
This is a very informative video. The time and patience you have is incredible. I am growing from seeds. They now look like mini skinny ferns. Its Aug 2024. Im planning to put them in my raised bed with sun. Until I watched, I thought they like some sun. Not a lot. You have saved me from planting ing a wrong place. Ty for your time.
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful! I hope you successfully grow asparagus!
Thank you very much!😊
You are very welcome!
Great video. Growing cantaloupe for the first time.
Thank you. We wish you all the best.
Finally somebody in north Texas
Howdy! Welcome to our channel!
Thank you! I can see how to grow asparagus, but that takes a lot of time and patience. Thank you.
It sure does! It pays off by not having to plant it again. Thank you!
Wow…that looked absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing and stay blessed! -Calvin
Thank you so much!
another great video! thx.

As always, an excellent video Dina ! Thank you
Thank you so much!
Спасибо за видео. Молодец. Нет ничего вкуснее дынек, выращенных самой. У нас тоже есть такой сорт, но они у нас побольше размером, или так выглядят на камеру. Приятного аппетита. 😊❤️
Спасибо большое! ❤️
😍😍😍

Good variety of plants 🪴 thank you.
Thank you!
I tried growing Malabar spinach this year and stalled the same way. Also, I was wondering what seeds, from vegetables and flowers, do you plant around this time in August?
Brassicas, beans, squash, herbs, and greens can all be planted this month. Thank you!
@@millsfamilygardening2634 Thank you.
Thank you for the video! I'm close to harvesting my onions in a few weeks! Very helpful! 😁
You are very welcome! Congrats! 👏
My last watermelons were eaten but this works well for me
That's great! Thank you!
❤😊
Thank you!
❤😊
💞
I am going to try this! Thank you!
Thank you! I hope your trees like it!
im trying to grow corn too! btw the season in my place is rainy, can i grow corn during this season?
With too much rain, the seeds might rot, but if it's time to plant in your region, then I'd go ahead and plant the seeds.
Yep. The amount of rain is too much. Some places are even flooding. I have planted them in a pot, I always cover with a bucket when the rain seems to be too much. But guess what? Some of the seeds have started to grow roots! Thank you for this video! I'll let you know everything that happens with my plants!❤️
I live in West Texas , planted Okra was planted in April. And it's just now starting to put on vegetables why
I noticed okra takes a long time to start producing pods. Now, I start my okra indoors at the beginning of March and plant seedlings outside in April. We started harvesting a little bit at the end of May. Now we are swimming in okra. Okra produces faster when I water it well, too.
This is good ...Gonna do it for cantaloupes
Thank you! I hope it works well.
I realize this video is 3 years old. Hopefully you have invested in a potato fork by now. Looks like a small pitch fork. Great for small gardening. You'll save a lot of those potatoes you're cutting up with the shovel.
I have not, but that's a great idea! I'll certainly look into a potato fork. Thank you!
I noticed better germination when you let the seeds soak overnight.
That's a great tip! Thank you!
