jihane hamdaoui I don't think it starts slow. There are just some side stories, which are very good actually, that may seem to give a more slow pace to the series. Personally i loved every single episode. However the last episodes are epic as you said.

This anime teaches us how the lack of mother/child bond and the love - unconditional love a mother gives does to a person. The lack of identity, the lack of love, the lack of existence, even gender identity .. all create a monster. A mother that doesn't love is a true monster. A mother that choose between her children or never search for them .. save them .. sacrifice her life for their existence .. isn't a mother. I look at my daughter and I had times were it doesn't matter if this step is going to literally put me at risk .. because to me, her safety, her happiness and giving her her mother was more important than anything. It hurts .. at the end and as a mother .. I wanted to hug Johan. I couldn't but go through a rollercoaster journey until I found the answer for his troubled existence. It is sad that this story is not an alien through life, many serial killers have a bad disastrous childhood .. many have a mother who can't love.

Johan's last words haunt me. Which one of them did his mother pick? Did he do what he did just because he was tormented by this mixture of guilt for being the one who was saved and shame for possibly being the true unwanted child? I can't stop thinking about it. I love to rewatch the ending. The feelings I get are so rare.
And to think the mom had no power. Their parents meeting was no chance all was planned to create the child that would be according to this Organisation would be Hitler incarnate. I don't think the dad's death was coincidence he served his purpose. If mom had gone against them she would have met the same fate leaving both kids in the hands of those people. So there was no unwanted child....

Guys,everyone has a latent monster inside himself. A momebt,a decision can make this monster emerge. Our name and the love of our deareast ones protect us from becoming this monster. When Anna was gone,Johan life was cursed: he had to become Anna, to forget love and his name. Just to protect her. And no one could save him,from that moment,the intelligent,sweet boy,shared his mind with an horryfying creature. And this story is placed in our world,not in imaginary world. Johan is real,someone knows his name,and till hw will live,Johan will be. Hope everyone of you stays well and warm, because the Monster is everywhere.
Johan undoubtedly thinks his mother saved him on accident and that he was unwanted. Just look at his shift in tone, body language, voice and mindset once Anna returns from the red rose mansion. Johan is waiting for her and they immediately run away, his mother is nowhere in sight.
Uggh... the song that starts at 1:28:15 is my FAVORITE piece of music in this beautiful anime series! It makes me sad, yet hopeful. It makes me want to cry but also want to smile. I just love it so much! Kudos to Monster for being one of the best anime shows I have watched thus far.
Not only the song is great but it also is used in the most appropriate scenes inside the anime. I remember myself crying many times (a perfect balance of sadness and happiness at the same time) while hearing this song when some powerful stuff was happening in this magnificent show.

DUDE I have had this OST on in the background as I draw and do some research on my laptop and I took a moment to notice the music and I was like "...dude. I feel like I'm literally about to cry right now." (obviously said in my head) But then I what track was playing, and it's no wonder!!
+Myriad00 the thing is, lunge was so smart he could have solved the whole case and finish the anime in 3-4 episodes. So they had to make lunge have a flaw, which is to view Tenma as the main culprit and be oblivious towards anything else
+jigglymabob I agree, but I think there's a good reason for Lunge's behavior. His extreme intelligence and systematic tendencies have caused him to become very obsessive, and since he's basically never been wrong before, he can't really see that possibility.
I gotta say, Naoki Urasawa is one of the best authors out there. Whoever translates his works does an amazing job, as well. Serious props to the translators. If you enjoy Naoki Urusawa's Monster, I'd also heavily recommend I. 20th Century Boys - A group of children decide they'll be the protectors of the world (since they loved anime and superheros they wanted to be like them when they grew up) what they didn't know is the world was being threatened to end by an unknown cult leader who had the unnatural ability to murder people without ever having to even meet them who simply went by the name "friend." - I believe this is actually his longest work with a total of 11 "Perfect" Volumes and a 12th after story volume. II. Pluto - A story about how a world filled with robots and humans coexisting would work, and the death of a very famous robot. III. Asadora - Something caused a giant tsunami in Japan that took out a portion of the country. Now, a young child by the name of Asa slowly uncovers what that thing was while also slowly fostering her love of flying (pun intended). This manga series is ongoing as of now, but is slowly being translated and put out as each volume finishes. IV. Mujirushi - A story of a young girl and her father as he works through his recent divorce and a mountain of debt he placed on himself due to a heinous amount of bad decisions he made in the past. It's potentially Naoki's shortest story being a total of 9 chapters long.

That doesn't hold up really. Johan himself is quite an unrealistic villain. In reality is he actually possible? An individual who can influence people to do such things just be speaking to them and recalling their past etc. He too has some kind of special powers. He is some kind of super human.
Every form of media has its best piece, and Monster is the most precious jewel of anime. This soundtrack has just reminded me how great the series was.
Sweeper 32:18 gives me such chills, I can't begin to describe the feeling x_x. To me it's like a complete road to the hell of terror and hopelessness and back. Part, Gingerly and Angel hand had just as big an impact, I think I temporarily teleported to another emotional and mental dimension while listening to them, oh god o.o. I'm especially intrigued tho by the subtle sense of fragility and tenderness Gingerly made me think of, those delicate little tones you hear in the middle of it made me feel like peeking into the heart of a strangely mature child, but who still retains some traces of his stolen innocence -might be placebo effect at work, but to me, that's definitely a tune created for Johan specifically, the two blend into one just perfectly.

I love this anime, this is not anime...this is something beyond our imagination. I watched this 3 times and gonna watch it again. what's so special about it is that in the first you're like "oh shit so the blonde guy is the monster" and after some few episode you be like "is Dr.Tenma the real monster or is it Nina?! trust me when I first watched it I was absolutely LOST. its true that Johan fucks with people's mind, and he fucks with our minds as well.
I first watched this show back in 2014 and wouldn't mind watching it 10 time through the my lifetime. This was a masterpiece when it comes to psychological anime

I never thought I'd find such a beautiful gem of a anime before. This was such excellence in writing, I truly wish there was more. I loved all the characters and got easily hooked. Absolutely phenomenal stuff!
Listening to this soundtrack, I was like immersed into various old movies: noir, detective series, suspense horror, bright 50s comedy, swing from 60s… What a great soundtrack!

This OST is literally goosebumps for 1 hour 37 mins. People say Attack on Titan or Death Note or Naruto are all time great animes when they clearly haven't seen this gem ❤
I've been looking for the variation of "Cannot Hear" that plays when *SPOILER* Peter Čapek is shot in the head by his henchmen and in the final episode when Johan is in the hospital talking about his mother choosing between giving up him or his sister.
Just finished this masterpiece yesterday, and i kid you not this was an absolute roller coaster of emotions!!! When Wolfgang Grimmer died, i was feeling so sad...and this anime played so many tricks with my brain and the ending of it was mind-blowing and kind of questioning too. But overall, Its a gem 💎! I guess i would like to thank my male bestie for recommending me to watch this ^_^
Podrá parecer raro, pero Monster se convirtió en uno de mis espacios seguros; casi cada noche me sentaba cómodamente en un sofá a ver dos o más capítulos, y no hacía más que concentrarme únicamente en el anime, que resultó ser más inmersivo de lo que esperaba (y ni se diga del ambiente que creaba el doblaje en castellano). Si no fuera porque considero que ninguna obra es perfecta, hubiera calificado a Monster con 10/10 en todo aspecto. Espero con ansias el momento en el que regrese a esta maravillosa historia que tanto aprecio.
I would highly recommend Monster to anyone that wants to watch an anime that isn't solely targeted at kids and want to watch something that is intellectually stimulating and allows you to think deeper into things, like what is the meaning of life, why are some people evil and how our choices/decisions affect us and those around us. I so glad I found this anime, I watched it together with a friend. Both of us think it's a 10/10. Johan, Grimmer Tenma a few of the amazing characters, not the forget the other well constructed characters. The ending was beautiful, so many theories behind it. My most favourite anime now. So much historical detail has gone into this anime/manga, the pacing was just perfect, the ost is so fitting to the themes and scenes. Beautiful, I wish more people see/read this series :)
Only madhouse can doing anime like this today...Now they are doing Alderamin On The Sky, not a masterpiece but still good. If Madhouse will do harem or ecchi i will kill myself xD They are my only hope for dark anime

I remember every time that I heard that end bit of the seeds of time I just thought to myself “wow, this is such a good song” I’m talking about 57:28 here. It almost sends chills down my spine! I just love it. So many pieces in this soundtrack stand out because that’s how good the soundtrack is. So many things about this show are just amazing, the animation, characters, writing, plot, even the dub is good! I never thought I’d say this, but I actually prefer the dub to sub in this instance. And really, the whole soundtrack is so good. So many beautiful songs, even the dramatic & angry ones still seem to sound beautiful. So well done. This series is that good that I’ve been able to get back into it multiple times, watch episodes repeatedly and never get bored. With everything except this series, I’ve only kept interest for one time (long or short, never continued after I dropped it) but with monster I have picked it right back up again as soon as I was losing interest, about 4 times, subconsciously. Ever since the first episode when I watched it for very the first time, I knew it was going to be my favourite. It hooked me in instantly. It was so fun to watch that it had me theorising just from the little details. I was trying to figure out the mystery as it went! I definitely wouldn’t do that with something I was bored of. Heck, I finished all 74 episodes in less than 3 days! Of course it wouldn’t be for everyone, but this is honestly perfect to me. Really my type of thing.

I'm reading the manga right now and It's amazing. I don't want the story to finish but I think I will read the last books while listening to this soundtrack. It makes the reading even more epic. Naoki Kurasawa, your becoming one of my favorite mangaka.
Johan shows us that “the real monster (last episode)” is something that exists within us all. He and Tenma are two sides off the same coin, yet share similar qualities. When Johan kills the doctors, it’s because Tenma truly believes they’d be better off dead. Tenma felt he had to stop Johan because he created the monster- that it was his own fault. In the end, he knew he couldn’t kill Johan, because he would become just as bad as him (the scenery for a doomsday). People saying Johan is the villain or a psychopath are missing the whole point of the series, and I believe that point is that monsters exist within us all “the monster inside me is getting bigger…. Chomp chomp, munch munch, gobble gobble”.
Yes!! This!! One of the many things that I love about this series is how _human_ every character Naoki Urasawa has written feels. We could be any one of the people in this story. It could happen to anyone. Once you finish the anime/manga you're left with a feeling that your life is in YOUR hands.
1:28:14 This music is such a beautiful and memorable track. You can feel everything, every problem, flying off, as if you were watching a superb sunset over a splendid forest, eating an apple. But there's one track I didn't find, which is the track that plays when Johann and Nina are face to face in a destructed house, near the end, in the episode 67.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. This anime teaches us how the lack of mother/child bond and the love - unconditional love a mother gives does to a person. The lack of identity, the lack of love, the lack of existence, even gender identity .. all create a monster. A mother that doesn't love is a true monster. A mother that choose between her children or never search for them .. save them .. sacrifice her life for their existence .. isn't a mother. I look at my daughter and I had times were it doesn't matter if this step is going to literally put me at risk .. because to me, her safety, her happiness and giving her her mother was more important than anything. It hurts .. at the end and as a mother .. I wanted to hug Johan. I couldn't but go through a rollercoaster journey until I found the answer for his troubled existence. It is sad that this story is not an alien through life, many serial killers have a bad disastrous childhood .. many have a mother who can't love.
I always saw the mother as the real Monster of this series

Johan's last words haunt me. Which one of them did his mother pick? Did he do what he did just because he was tormented by this mixture of guilt for being the one who was saved and shame for possibly being the true unwanted child? I can't stop thinking about it. I love to rewatch the ending. The feelings I get are so rare.

And to think the mom had no power. Their parents meeting was no chance all was planned to create the child that would be according to this Organisation would be Hitler incarnate. I don't think the dad's death was coincidence he served his purpose. If mom had gone against them she would have met the same fate leaving both kids in the hands of those people.

Guys,everyone has a latent monster inside himself. A momebt,a decision can make this monster emerge. Our name and the love of our deareast ones protect us from becoming this monster. When Anna was gone,Johan life was cursed: he had to become Anna, to forget love and his name. Just to protect her. And no one could save him,from that moment,the intelligent,sweet boy,shared his mind with an horryfying creature. And this story is placed in our world,not in imaginary world. Johan is real,someone knows his name,and till hw will live,Johan will be. Hope everyone of you stays well and warm, because the Monster is everywhere.
Johan undoubtedly thinks his mother saved him on accident and that he was unwanted. Just look at his shift in tone, body language, voice and mindset once Anna returns from the red rose mansion. Johan is waiting for her and they immediately run away, his mother is nowhere in sight.
Uggh... the song that starts at 1:28:15 is my FAVORITE piece of music in this beautiful anime series! It makes me sad, yet hopeful. It makes me want to cry but also want to smile. I just love it so much! Kudos to Monster for being one of the best anime shows I have watched thus far.
Not only the song is great but it also is used in the most appropriate scenes inside the anime. I remember myself crying many times (a perfect balance of sadness and happiness at the same time) while hearing this song when some powerful stuff was happening in this magnificent show.

+Myriad00 the thing is, lunge was so smart he could have solved the whole case and finish the anime in 3-4 episodes. So they had to make lunge have a flaw, which is to view Tenma as the main culprit and be oblivious towards anything else
+jigglymabob I agree, but I think there's a good reason for Lunge's behavior. His extreme intelligence and systematic tendencies have caused him to become very obsessive, and since he's basically never been wrong before, he can't really see that possibility.

Whoever translates his works does an amazing job, as well. Serious props to the translators.

I. 20th Century Boys - A group of children decide they'll be the protectors of the world (since they loved anime and superheros they wanted to be like them when they grew up) what they didn't know is the world was being threatened to end by an unknown cult leader who had the unnatural ability to murder people without ever having to even meet them who simply went by the name "friend."
- I believe this is actually his longest work with a total of 11 "Perfect" Volumes and a 12th after story volume.
II. Pluto - A story about how a world filled with robots and humans coexisting would work, and the death of a very famous robot.
III. Asadora - Something caused a giant tsunami in Japan that took out a portion of the country. Now, a young child by the name of Asa slowly uncovers what that thing was while also slowly fostering her love of flying (pun intended). This manga series is ongoing as of now, but is slowly being translated and put out as each volume finishes.
IV. Mujirushi - A story of a young girl and her father as he works through his recent divorce and a mountain of debt he placed on himself due to a heinous amount of bad decisions he made in the past. It's potentially Naoki's shortest story being a total of 9 chapters long.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.

Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.

That doesn't hold up really. Johan himself is quite an unrealistic villain. In reality is he actually possible? An individual who can influence people to do such things just be speaking to them and recalling their past etc. He too has some kind of special powers. He is some kind of super human.
Every form of media has its best piece, and Monster is the most precious jewel of anime. This soundtrack has just reminded me how great the series was.
Sweeper 32:18 gives me such chills, I can't begin to describe the feeling x_x. To me it's like a complete road to the hell of terror and hopelessness and back. Part, Gingerly and Angel hand had just as big an impact, I think I temporarily teleported to another emotional and mental dimension while listening to them, oh god o.o. I'm especially intrigued tho by the subtle sense of fragility and tenderness Gingerly made me think of, those delicate little tones you hear in the middle of it made me feel like peeking into the heart of a strangely mature child, but who still retains some traces of his stolen innocence -might be placebo effect at work, but to me, that's definitely a tune created for Johan specifically, the two blend into one just perfectly.

what's so special about it is that in the first you're like "oh shit so the blonde guy is the monster" and after some few episode you be like "is Dr.Tenma the real monster or is it Nina?! trust me when I first watched it I was absolutely LOST. its true that Johan fucks with people's mind, and he fucks with our minds as well.
I first watched this show back in 2014 and wouldn't mind watching it 10 time through the my lifetime. This was a masterpiece when it comes to psychological anime

This OST is literally goosebumps for 1 hour 37 mins. People say Attack on Titan or Death Note or Naruto are all time great animes when they clearly haven't seen this gem ❤

Just finished this masterpiece yesterday, and i kid you not this was an absolute roller coaster of emotions!!! When Wolfgang Grimmer died, i was feeling so sad...and this anime played so many tricks with my brain and the ending of it was mind-blowing and kind of questioning too. But overall, Its a gem 💎! I guess i would like to thank my male bestie for recommending me to watch this ^_^

Podrá parecer raro, pero Monster se convirtió en uno de mis espacios seguros; casi cada noche me sentaba cómodamente en un sofá a ver dos o más capítulos, y no hacía más que concentrarme únicamente en el anime, que resultó ser más inmersivo de lo que esperaba (y ni se diga del ambiente que creaba el doblaje en castellano). Si no fuera porque considero que ninguna obra es perfecta, hubiera calificado a Monster con 10/10 en todo aspecto. Espero con ansias el momento en el que regrese a esta maravillosa historia que tanto aprecio.

I so glad I found this anime, I watched it together with a friend. Both of us think it's a 10/10. Johan, Grimmer Tenma a few of the amazing characters, not the forget the other well constructed characters. The ending was beautiful, so many theories behind it. My most favourite anime now. So much historical detail has gone into this anime/manga, the pacing was just perfect, the ost is so fitting to the themes and scenes. Beautiful, I wish more people see/read this series :)

I remember every time that I heard that end bit of the seeds of time I just thought to myself “wow, this is such a good song” I’m talking about 57:28 here. It almost sends chills down my spine! I just love it. So many pieces in this soundtrack stand out because that’s how good the soundtrack is. So many things about this show are just amazing, the animation, characters, writing, plot, even the dub is good! I never thought I’d say this, but I actually prefer the dub to sub in this instance. And really, the whole soundtrack is so good. So many beautiful songs, even the dramatic & angry ones still seem to sound beautiful. So well done. This series is that good that I’ve been able to get back into it multiple times, watch episodes repeatedly and never get bored. With everything except this series, I’ve only kept interest for one time (long or short, never continued after I dropped it) but with monster I have picked it right back up again as soon as I was losing interest, about 4 times, subconsciously. Ever since the first episode when I watched it for very the first time, I knew it was going to be my favourite. It hooked me in instantly. It was so fun to watch that it had me theorising just from the little details. I was trying to figure out the mystery as it went! I definitely wouldn’t do that with something I was bored of. Heck, I finished all 74 episodes in less than 3 days! Of course it wouldn’t be for everyone, but this is honestly perfect to me. Really my type of thing.

There's a track that plays when Lunge and the police invade the hospital in episode 8, it also plays when Tenma starts operating on Lawyer or whatever his name is, never been able to find it
I'm reading the manga right now and It's amazing. I don't want the story to finish but I think I will read the last books while listening to this soundtrack. It makes the reading even more epic. Naoki Kurasawa, your becoming one of my favorite mangaka.

Johan shows us that “the real monster (last episode)” is something that exists within us all. He and Tenma are two sides off the same coin, yet share similar qualities. When Johan kills the doctors, it’s because Tenma truly believes they’d be better off dead. Tenma felt he had to stop Johan because he created the monster- that it was his own fault. In the end, he knew he couldn’t kill Johan, because he would become just as bad as him (the scenery for a doomsday). People saying Johan is the villain or a psychopath are missing the whole point of the series, and I believe that point is that monsters exist within us all “the monster inside me is getting bigger…. Chomp chomp, munch munch, gobble gobble”.
Yes!! This!! One of the many things that I love about this series is how _human_ every character Naoki Urasawa has written feels. We could be any one of the people in this story. It could happen to anyone.
Once you finish the anime/manga you're left with a feeling that your life is in YOUR hands.
Monster is the type of Anime Series that is actually more benefitted to have as a live action adaptation than an anime series.
