I grew up in the south, where we would either call it "fat lighter" or "kindling." On that, we carefully put a little pine straw, then more, being careful not to smother the fire because it smokes a lot. Throw in some pine cones and sticks, then bigger sticks. A couple of pieces of pine log will help it stay lit until you can get some hardwood. The fire should be between the logs, making sure air can get in. The pine logs will burn, but they will not leave coals. If the fire is going well, stack the hardwood so it is getting hot enough to catch when it is ready. Don't use green wood unless you have no alternative. If anything is green, you might hear the wood letting of the steam, making some interesting noises. You should have a roaring fire soon. Keep feeding it hardwood, if you want coals to cook with. Stack it so the air can get in! Enjoy!

thanks! It is more prevalent in other locations around the country but in the mountains at around 10,000 ft elevation, its a little harder to find sometimes.

I wish I lived where pine was more available in the wild. Lots in peoples yards. They get mad when you start chopping on them. Same thing with bamboo.

what cant you see? Matt is working in frame for the entire video. The only thing you cant see are the shavings coming off the wood for parts of it but you see the results of that later. Let me know what you would like to see and we can make a video for that and explain what's going on.

Move closer… come out to a class. Not sure why you say you can’t see when everything he’s talking about in the moment is visible.
