Between the Birthday Party and 'Dogs In Space,' this song was immortalised; for that I'm grateful. I'm thrilled to hear the original as well. Rowland, you were a genius.
Thanks - I had never heard this. Love it. The Boys Next Door version just never seemed right - so incongruous with Roland S. or The Birthday Party. Man, everything about him - even the voice - gets right to my core. He was the real deal. Saw Cat Power last night in DC and she did a mind-blowingly spectacular rendition of this. She made it her own, but it was so full of love and honor for Roland S. I know he always had a somewhat difficult relationship with this song, but she did him proud with it.
Janine Hall (RIP) bass (The Saints, Weddings Parties Anything), Jeffrey Wegener on drums (Laughing Clowns, Ed Kuepper, Mick Turner). Great artifact, thanks for posting.
Hell dude, throw on just radio birdmam and you're set. Australia had a very west coast California influenced sound with the sun and surf and culture that Britain couldn't come close to touching sonically. The environment shines through pretty hard, maybe not with Howard and cave etc, but there's a hell of a lot of good Aussie music.
Dead Can Dance is another amazing Australian band. It surprises me how much Australian music I like compared to more populous countries. They really hold up well.
please someone definiteivly clarify for me? Is that a young Roland singing his own song oir is someone else on vocals and this is simply the first incarnation of this classic. I always wanted to hear Roland sing it, still not sure if I just have. PLs advise!
@@stumckinlay5390 What is weird is that both of his solo albums were already released when he commented, and in my opinion he sounds pretty good in these albums and I can't picture anyone else singing those songs.
RIP OLLIE !!!
This song guts me every damn time. "So goddamn good" doesn't do it justice.

Wow, what some kick ass music with kick ass lyrics to accompany it! I love Rowlands guitar work! What a gift he is to music!

I love that Rowland wrote songs about love .
Recorded on cassette tape at an early practice. We could have done a good record I think .
This is great, thanks Jeffrey.
The most under appreciated artist to fuel an Avalanche of gre at rock n roll.
I just keep coming back to the original, wonderful.

Strange to listen to a 16 year old pen down a track that is better than most anyone will ever write
He was 16 when he wrote this? Incredible
I think George Michael was about that age when he wrote "Careless Whisper".
Thank you so much for uploading this original version. Rowland's music is so essential to me. Amazing to hear this version.
Rowland S. Howard (Rip). - song a similary "Knockin on the door" Dylan's. Classical this version. Rowland - We all love.
yeh!!! good one...
Those days when stkilda was the centre for the creative, I find it unfathomable that it's almost just collective memories now. I'll miss you 😢
LOL ... so accurate. This is exactly what being a teen feels like...
I like the moodier, darker sound of the Boys Next Door version, but I agree, this has a great late-70s alternative sound which I also enjoy.
This is music!
makes it 10x better that it's young rowland singing his own song, i prefer this over the boys next door version...
Such a great band.
@adeadlymugato thank you so much again for posting this version!
rip ollie
My god... (Rowland that is)
Think I'll do a cover of this version tonight for invasion day
cringe
His guitar was bang on timing
yeah, he just wrote it. this is his song.
i'm glad this is on youtube. now how in the world do i find a copy on mp3 and vinyl?! :(
@bekyeahuh You can find it on VA - 2005 - Inner City Sound (Compilation)
If anyone tell you Australian music is shit then play them this song and the covers too.

I say the same about throw your arms around me
They were all together, ideas, songs. Luck prefers the prepared. I still Love You.

Yes, it's Rowland singing. Vocals for all Young Charlatans songs were split between Rowland and Ollie Olsen.
Thanks Walrus! The fanpage put me right last night, but much appreciated.
That's definitely Roland singing.
Before the boys next door!
So much better than the The Birthday Party Version of the song..
Do you mean The Screaming Jets version? Or are you being ironic?
@@xero6396 They mean The Birthday Party.
Boys Next Door
👁El ojo
oops, I meant Boys Next Door Version..
It's upbeat and ironic and not Nick Cave Schmaltz - thankfully it survives
the cover of this on A Thing Called Divine Fits is good
I keep a book of 'facial oil'?
Poker face so well
Jonas Boll
Thank You.
Lol... Whatever! Lol.. :D
LOL
Here to LOL
i dont actually like it. so yea
o my god. he really cant sing..
I wonder if you’ve worked things out yet?

@@NikolasMitsugui I think David Byrne summed it up best when saying that he trusted and connected most with people who weren't "perfect" singers.
@@stumckinlay5390 Yeah, I feel that comment. Me too.
Lou can't sing. Iggy can't really sing beyond faking it. Bob DEFINITELY can't sing. David sings wierd.
Wait, what was the problem we were discussing?
