My daughter and i went to Ware Massachusetts to stay at a Bed and Breakfast and then go to Brimfield, Mass for a huge flea mkt held outside twice a year. We were at Salem mass and Boston the day after the flea mkt. We were flying home to Calif the next day. The next day was Sept 11 , the year 2001. We were terrified ofcourse. We stayed in an hotel and were glued to the news. We had thought of going to New York the morning of the 11th to see Manhattan. Our flight was at 11 am from Hartford Conn and we decide not to. We would have arrived around 9am if we had. We started our long drive home the next day. We were so scared not knowing if we would get home safely, not knowing if there would be other attacks. The lady that ran the Bed and Breakfast had a daughter who baby sat children of a woman who worked at the towers. We never found out if she made it out alive. ... We bought an American flag and had it hanging out of our car window all the way home. Every year my daughter and i relive that day like thousands of others. ...That was my worse vacation , but so blessed that out flight home was not one of the planes that were involved and i think of all the souls lost.😢

We also endured a hurricane during a holiday in Cuba. We weren't told anything about it but noticed the windows being taped up in reception. We thought the chandeliers were being removed for cleaning in our naivety. It was only really when the piano was wheeled away that questions were asked. We were sent back to our rooms under curfew and told to make up beds in the bathroom because of the wall to floor windows. Once the hurricane had subsided our hotel was completely cut off. The food was scarce. We had to flush our toilets with water from the pool. It was quite an experience. But we counted ourselves lucky. The poor Cubans had very little to start with and so many homes were destroyed. We left quite a lot of clothes for them. It was a lesson learned

Afternoon Caroline, my daughter and her family were in Greece not sure of the island but about 5-6 years ago while asleep the whole resort had a earthquake Sarah said it was very unnerving some of the town was damaged but the hotel was fine, but as you can imagine it was a unsettled holiday, she said they all put a brave on to enjoy the rest of their stay.❤

Caroline thank you for sharing your story. I've been lucky not to have had a hellish holiday. Once a small earthquake in Corfu but no damage. My son and daughter in law married in Cuba in 2003. It was a beautiful island and the wedding was wonderful. Unfortunately my son passed away in 2009 with a brain tumour. My daughter in law would love to be able to take their daughter there one day to share some memories.

Ugh😩, we went to Jamaica had booked a quiet relaxing holiday (brochure said). We were given a room near the road which sounded like a race track all night. My husband had developed an ear infection. We complained at reception who weren’t interested as we had booked with Hales and Jarvis., they could not do anything. I plonked myself in the reception with bags and said I would not move until they contacted the agent. Suddenly she arrived and argued we had only paid for that room, I showed her the brochure -I had torn the page out- and we negotiated an upgrade . We paid and claimed when we returned, took some time but we got the money back. The lesson always take the brochure. Sorry but thought this was worth mentioning. I always enjoy your podcasts Caroline.

We "survived" through 2 hurricanes in Florida on the Gulf Coast, Matthew in 2016 and Michael in 2018. Never had to evacuate as they both landed further up the coast, but it was unnerving to see the upsurge in the ocean cause water to come up through the drains causing floods on many local roads 😲. The hotel put sand bags in many beach edge areas to try and stop the ocean water coming into the grounds, this was before the hurricane even got close to landfall. Afterwards it left many trees down and a few roofs were seen dislodged but nothing major in the area we were staying. Friends and relatives back in the UK were quite worried about us though as they were making a big thing of them on the news . We would still go back and it's usually been during the end of the hurricane season (October) and we love the place so much. Unfortunately doubtful we ever will as prices have gone up so much since we last went we would need to win the lottery 😔

By far, the worst holiday we ever had was last year in Aberdeen, Scotland. The first hotel we stayed in was lovely, but then we had to move hotels, which was more like a detention centre. Horrible green walls, hard beds, questionable bathrooms, and rude staff. We left early, which was a shame, as I told my family what a lovely time I had when I was younger visiting Edinburgh.

My daughter and I were in Florida when Category 4 hurricane Ian hit in September 2022. We were in a villa without electricity over quite a few days. We hade managed to put the hire car in the garage in the hope it would be protected. However, what we didn’t envisage was that the electricity would be off for as long as it was. We were due to fly home shortly after the hurricane was due to hit, and hoped that our flights would still be on. The one thing we didn’t account for was the act of getting the car out of the garage without electricity! We contacted near neighbours who were residents on the estate in the hope they could assist with the manual opening of the garage but with no luck. Eventually, a gentleman from further away was recruited and was luckily successful in opening the unit. We were so grateful to him. Good news followed letting us know the flights home were back on too so in the end all turned out fine. I’ve been in on the extreme outside of one before but only with the very strong winds.

We were in Orlando when hurricane Floyd hit, I had to ask a neighbour next door to the villa what we should do, they advised us to tape windows, put pool furniture in pool, and go in the garage, which had no windows, as it happened, it was torrential rain and a bit blowy, but gone by next morning xxx❤

You had me worried there for a moment Caroline - I thought at first you were talking about this happening to you on your current holiday, but remembered that you should still be away at this time. We don't usually get hurricanes in Western Australia, mainly cyclones and they don't usually travel down the coast. On this occasion in the late 1970's a cyclone called Alby struck the seaside town of Albany which is in the southwest of Western Australia. We were on holiday there and had to endure it through the night while we were staying in a chalet. We thought the whole place was going to cave in. I had never experienced anything like that before. We had no power for 2 days and there was a lot of damage there and everywhere else that the cyclone had hit, also a number of fatalities as people had caught out in it. I'm so glad you all survived that particular holiday!

Oh my, what an ordeal!! You just never know whilst travelling what might happen, do you? My worst travel story was when my husband and I were returning back to Minneapolis from Spain for our 20th anniversary. It was such a lovely week! But marred by the trip home. I will never again only leave 1.5 hours between flights, especially if changing planes at Charles de Gaulle airport(but hubby will never fly thru that airport again!). We missed our connecting flight in Paris (direct flight to Minneapolis), had to sit around for hours waiting for the last plane from Paris to the U.S. but it went to Atlanta. You guessed it, we missed the next connecting flight and were put up by Delta in a hotel I would never stay at! I sat next to someone on the plane who gave me his cold so I didn't get much sleep that night. Finally made it home after two days and our bags arrived two days after that. Yea, that was my trip from hell. Nothing compared to yours but still unnerving!

Enjoyed your chat while drinking an iced coffee. I haven't had a dreadful experience like yours, bult we did get left on the top of a London bus when it went into the bus garage at the end of the night shift! It was quite scary to have the lights go out and you don't
know where you are. Anyway, I thank you for your entertaining videos. I especially like the fashion hauls and making choices for my own purchases. I am an American living in Arizona, but my family goes back to at least 1600 in Canterbury. Small world!

O.M.G. this must have been so frightened. It's bad enough when it's you and your husband but having little William as well, fight or flight comes into action. I've had some dreadful holidays but never been evacuated especially to the communist part of the country. You've made me think about the time of year when travelling again. Having said that, the fires in Greece couldn't have been predicted. So glad you all stayed safe. X❤

No real bad holiday stories really but this year I was back home on holiday in Scotland in May/June. My return flight home (to Northern California) was on a Monday. This was a solo trip and I was staying with my best friend from High School whose house was only a 25 minute drive from Edinburgh Airport (we are both in our late 60s and reliving our youth 🤣🤣). But even although she was close I decided to book a hotel room at the airport for the night before. At about 6:00pm, even although I was already checked in, I decided to check on my flights. Just as well as they (British Airways) had cancelled my flight from Edinburgh to London, rebooked me on flight from GLASGOW and changed my flight from London to San Francisco. Too complicated to go into but I ended up staying an extra night. A bit stressful to deal with on my own - my Apple Watch notified me a couple of times that my heart rate had risen. Thankfully I had excellent travel insurance and got all expenses reimbursed very quickly, within a week in fact. I had paid for seat reservations with BA and filed a claim with them immediately. Still waiting ….it is now 3 months.

I would be furious with Thompson holidays….glad you stuck with it and got a result. Hope they got a rollicking from you too. We were on holiday in Turkey once and I became ill halfway through a two day trip organised by tour company and couldn’t continue and we had to sort ourselves out. When I felt well enough to travel back to our resort we had to find a way to get back. To be honest I can’t even remember which company it was now but we were furious to have no support whatsoever.

One time in Manchester, we had all boarded the plane when a passenger found a note in the magazine thingy and passed it to cabin crew. It said something like - tick tock boom ! They sent security on to the plane with sniffer dogs but then disembarked us all whilst they carried out a thorough search. A couple of hours later we were asked to re-board, which we did apart from one elderly lady who refused and so we then had to wait until they had off loaded her suitcase. Our captain by then had exceeded his duty hours and we had another wait until replacement staff arrived. All very distressing to what was probably a silly prank - but they would not take the risk.
