    Fun thing is, Grayson's German is getting so good, he's developing German inflection AND a Bavarian accent. If y'all stay in Germany, he'll be indistinguishable (languagewise) within 2 years at most

      And I think it would be even faster without the pandemic situation. Children learn fast, havin g contact with other children in school,... Having home schooling and reduced contact makes it quite difficult.

    • @timefliesaway999
      @timefliesaway999 Год назад +1

      It’s probably also school, talking with many people and being put into situations where you have to speak their language. As adults, a lot of people speak English so if you don’t know sth, you’ll just quickly switch to English to explain. As kids, you don’t usually have that option. Might not be a big difference, but it adds up.
      But especially the socializing; talking helps the most when learning :D

    Grayson gets a huge compliment from me, too! Klingt spitze! And yes, total immersion. It feels like it’s so slow and then one day you suddenly realise how much you can say and understand. Just don’t worry about mistakes when speaking. When writing in German, that’s the time to make sure everything is perfect, but people make mistakes even in their mother tongue, and people also say, no, it’s like this or that in every language. The point is to get your mouth and brain expressing what you want to say, quickly and then you can build on that.

    • @MyMerryMessyGermanLife
      @MyMerryMessyGermanLife  2 года назад +5

      Hi Lauren!! That’s so true, I make mistakes in English, too. Grammar can be soooo complicated! How long did it take before you were fluent here?

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany 2 года назад +1

      Longer than it should have because a lot of people spoke English to me and I let them. So I honestly cannot say. But my biggest tip is to watch German TV and films (not dubbed from English because they have to speak too fast). A great start is the most brilliant 4-parter (it’s a film, actually) about Ludwig II and Neuschwanstein, which you can find here on RUclips, subtitled in English, on a channel called German Period Dramas. (I’ll check the channel and edit if it’s wrong)

In einem Jahr spricht er so gut Deutsch wie Englisch. The use of English words and phrases („Anglizismen“) is a hot-button issue in Germany. Some can’t use enough of them while speaking, others feel it’s much too much.

      The Indian languages are really bad in this aspect. No one speaks a pristine form of Hindi or any other Indian language. The main reason I understand what my parents say is because they alway mix their language with English. Even worse, if you try to speak pristine Hindi (or the regional language) the locals will think you are a pompous dork.

    On a different subject, you are really close to Italy. A drive from your location to Venice (through Austria) is about 5 hours. A little less than to Burg Eltz. Could be a great idea for a long weekend. And it's really cheap right now. The carnival of Venice is from Feb 12, 2022 - Tue, Mar 1, 2022. I think the kids would love it, and if I am not mistaken there is a school holiday in Bavaria during that period. (28 Feb 2022 - 4 Mar 2022)

    Wow, Grayson totally blew me away. Again. He even adopted something of a Bavarian "Klangbild" in German. This is not a dialect. Literally translated, a "sound-picture". It is neither an accent nor a dialect, because his German was perfect high German (Hochdeutsch). But the cadence, the slight difference in where the focus of inflections are placed is slightly, just a teensy slightly bit different from for example the Klangbild here in Hamburg, even when someone here speaks Hochdeutsch as well. It is sooo fascinating for me to see how he has developed within such a short time.
    BTW: not that this is bad, not in the slightest bit. It is just barely noticeable if you listen very very closely and you have lived in different regions of Germany for some time. It is only fascinating how he has picked this up. Amazing!
    Nope, the slightly elongated 'joooaaa' is pretty universal in German colloquial speech. While it might be slightly more used in the south, it will not be a 'betraying' sign of your origin. 😀
    BTW: Sara, that "Weißwurst" was almost a perfect Bavarian pronunciation of it. You definitely picked up on that as well. 😀👍
    Just for Kevin's dad jokes:
    Grayson is 10 now, so legally, under your direct supervision he can try a Weißbier at 14, if he wants to. He can legally buy and consume it at 16 himself, without adult supervision. At 18 anything goes.
    He has picked up the German humor already. He picked up on the literal question of travel in the past year (in 2022) and threw the answer back at ya. Nice! Good going, Grayson! 🤣
    There's the joke that there are more clubs in Germany than there are German citizens. While not technically true, Germans absolutely looooove their Vereine / clubs. So becoming a member of a club is probably one of the easiest ways (except meeting other parents at the playground when your kids are there) to meet up and make friendships with Germans. Good for you that you decided to pick up on that tip!
    Total immersion: perfect! That is the first thing you should try. Not live in your own bubble, but expand it as far as possible. BTW: is the German grandma the one Sara commented on in one of her earliest videos after you arrived here that she had this beautiful garden? It would be sooo great to hear that talking with her about some horticulture could have opened up a friendly contact.
    You guys will do absolutely fine, and your advances are definitely highly noticeable. Keep it up, you will succeed, I am certain.

    In case you want to improve your spoken German, there is a scheme called „Sprach-Tandem“ in Germany. You advertise (Facebook, black board in a store or a school) for a tandem and find a partner. You meet or call once a week and she/he speaks English to you and you answer in German. If the other person makes a mistake it is corrected by the native speaker. Win-win.

    A minor but lengthy comment...I went to Germany in 1984, as part of the US Army. I was stationed in Zweibruecken. I had to find an apartment off of the US Army base. I settled for an apartment in Schartzenecker, or maybe Einoed.. This was in the Saarland. Neither my landlord nor my neighbors spoke English -- they all spoke French and German. (The Saarland has a complicated history with France.) So, to communicate, we spoke German. I learned so much. After 5 years in Germany, including a second tour in Mainz, I could converse fairly well but understood a lot more in reading and writing. (I did take German in college). Alas, after returning the the US, i lost a lot of my knowledge. A friend of mine still speaks German to me. Although I generally understand what he says, I usually have to answer in English -- so sad. I have only been to Germany once since those days. I would love to visit again. You have encouraged me to revisit the language, although I probably should be learning spanish! Thanks very much for your channel! Whatever your future and your children's future hold, knowing a second language is great, espacial for US English speakers. And don't forget to read ( or re-read) Mark Twain's essay, "The Awful German Language!"

      Sadly in the USA it is not readily offered as a course at every high school. Spanish is guaranteed to be offered at all US high schools. Same with French and Latin. But German can go 50-50 or 40-60. My high school did not offer German and some seniors were complaining about it when I was a freshman. I did not learn German until college when after 4 years of Latin (I sometimes feel that I only took Latin because my parents learned Sanskrit) I said, “Forget this! In college, I am going to learn a language people still speak today.” At the University of Michigan, where I went for college, German is actually very popular to learn. They even a Max Kade German House living learning community for students who want to speak German every day. That’s the university’s only language living learning community. They don’t even have one for Spanish 😂!!!

    Jo! is typical bavarian....and Graysons german is brilliant!!!
    Kids learn so fast. But your german has improved also a lot.
    When I learned english in school here in Germany, I had a deal with my mom, who was a fluent speaker as well. The deal was to speak one hour a day only english- no matter what. My skills went up rapidly. To learn a language, speaking is the most important, even if it is the intimidating german language. Speak. Make mistakes. Your reward will be progress.

    You are all making such amazing progress! Grayson's German is really impressive, but your German is quickly improving too, Sara! That really is a great achievement considering you are self-employed and therefore not as surrounded by German as the others. Please don't apologise or feel bad for stumbling over German grammar - we can understand what you're saying perfectly fine, and the grammar will come to you with time :)

    Another way to learn German is to watch the TV. not TV shows or movies but something like German gameshows, standup comedy, trash shows (its embarassing to mention this, but you do learn a few things in there), etc. since you learn how germans naturally converse with each other and not reading from script. You also pick up alot of phrases and slangs that they normally don‘t do in Tv shows or movies.

    What helped me when I started writing longer texts in English: instead of trusting google translate (because it was quite bad back then), I copied everything into a MS word document and looked at the spell and grammar check. I think this might be also quite helpful to practice German declinations. It will underline every false article and verb ending mercilessly. 😉

    Hi, I am from Berlin.
    I had to smile when you asked your son about his Lieblingsessen. I think most your proposals were bavarian regional kitchen. For example Maultaschen or especually Weißwurst. When I came to Munich first time as a child of eleven shortly after the of the fall the Berlin wall, I've never heard of it before.
    The if you travel Germany you will discover every very different regional specialities. The same with beer. Nearly every place here has its own beer.

    Such good vibes from you lot :-) Go Grayson, Go! If he likes all things apple, he should try Apfelküchle - slices of apple fried in a batter and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Delicious! And Kevin's accent/inflection is so so Swedish - he tends to stress the end of his words eg. SomMER, WeißBIER whereas a Geman will stress the front SOMmer, WEIẞbier. With lots of listening that will right itself though.
