I love both the Imperial Family of Japan and the UK Royal Family. They do such a wonderful job of soft diplomacy that is impossible with republics like the US where politics taints anything our leaders do and say.

Both Emperor and Empress studied at Oxford. Empress Masako also graduated from Harvard.
Before she got married to Crown Prince Naruhito, she was a diplomat and devoted herself to solve a complicated trade issue about semiconductors between Japan and the US.

In the national questionnaire (answered by letter) conducted by Japanese media ,KYODO news at the end of April, 90% recognised the female emperor. The result of the questionnaire by the Japan Bar Association was also 75% of the results of recognising the female emperor. However, the current government still stubbornly supports the idea that only MEN recognise the emperor, and does not even make it an agenda for female emperors! Japan is left behind by the world and remains a male chauvinism!

At a guess, the £c30bn bilateral trade between the two states and the c£100bn Japanese FDI just last year probably covers it and anyway, Charlie likely had nothing else planned for this morning, anyway. Oh, b.t.w, our being (iirc) the two largest CPTPP member states AND defence partners (along with Italy) in what's very likely the most promising and capable 6th Gen fighter aircraft development project globally, both make it worth the effort as well.
