This was a really fun video!
Honestly, I feel like Doom 2 would address most of your issues with the first one. It's really more of Doom 1.5 than a true sequel, as it's just some new levels, monsters, and one weapon.
The added monsters really make the combat a lot more interesting/challenging. The Doom remake is also really fun.
Also the room that kills you at the end of episode 1 was actually cleared for the first time by a player ~6 months ago. ruclips.net/video/4qKO_VJTL5U/видео.html

Glad to hear you liked the video! :D
I might just have to try the next Doom games out then! I know some of the recent ones people enjoy too, although I remember hearing about the feeling of repetitive content for some of those
And heck yeah!! I'm glad to hear that someone cleared it for the first time! Must've felt absolutely wild lol

So, the reason that you can't look up and down, and why you can shoot enemies up on ledges with no problem, is actually really interesting. Doom fakes its 3D, and you're pretty much playing a top-down shooter with a fancy overlay. The map screen is how the engine recognises the terrain, and then each section has a "height" that it sets the walls and scenery. So even though you're looking at an enemy on higher ledge, the game thinks you're level with each other, and there's trickery happening to stop you walking up walls while still letting you drop down.

You have absolutely blown my mind with this concept, it actually took me several times of reading it to understand what on earth you were even saying lol! But that top-down shooter concept is insanely interesting! Making a game look 3d while doing all of that would've been absolutely insane!

@@vazis If you keep the map open, you can still move. That might give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. The devs used a lot of clever tricks to present the game as though it's in 3D, and I think that's great.

@@WandererEris That is so got dang sick. Is the fake 3d also why Doom can be played on a ton of different devices and still function as a game? I assumed it was entirely the type of code they used, but now armed with this new knowledge, I figure it could also be a part of the reason

@@vazis I think so. Computers back in 93 weren't very powerful, especially compared to the super computers we walk around with in our pockets every day, so devs back then had to work around a lot of limitations. The phones we have are more powerful than the computers that put man on the moon for the first time by a lot, is another way to look at it.
This is another reason why I have so much respect for devs that had to work back in the day. These days you get 100GB bloatware for games when Doom was only 12.118MB with all four episodes. Even then, look at Doom 2016 (70GB) and Doom Eternal (35GB) and you'll see that devs could do a LOT more optimising to get down the file sizes, and then maybe then THEY could run on the fridges of tomorrow.
