Asmongold is a gross dude who doesn't take showers on the reg (that's a fact, look it up), so why in the world do I care about his opinion on what's fun. Hating on it is just the meme but it's one that has grown old and needs to wither away. DS2 is a fun game that does deviate from the norm but is still an enjoyable boss filled experience. The story is also a one of my favorites.

Best PvP, best build variety, easily the most ambitious souls game before Elden Ring, great lore, best weapon variety and insanely good art direction, and it actually had a real NG+. You have to have never played this game to truly hate it, or you just don't like Souls games.

DS2 is my favorite and I played them in order. I like ADP for dodge rolling. Leveling up to super quick in DS2 and I got lost in the world unlike DS3

Ive played ds2 for over 500 hours and i still find myself saying "Why?" to a lot of the game. Some of the decisions made makes no sense

Ds2 has that "old videogame" magic about it. Almost nothing is explained, everything fucks you up and you will probably hate yourself. But in the end, you somehow learn something new through sheer coincidence, or someone dropping it in a comment section (or video) like this one. Reading through the comments taught me so much hidden things, that make sense ... yet I never even thought of them, because usually games nowadays would tell you or at least hint at it quite obviously. Not this bitch of a game tho. It was my first Souls game and made me love the series sooo much. I am very glad I picked it up and stayed with it. Even before starting it, I watched the all time classic "Happy Souls", the best walkthrough ever (even tho it isnt a walkthrough, but It taught me soooo much) and it taught me quite a lot and the recurring jokes it birthed are such classics. A friend and I even roleplayed Happy Souls in a coop run, this game is just magical to me and I love hearing people not absolutely hate it into oblivion.

I played all from souls games but not in order, i bought dark souls 2 only after i finished ds1 and bloodborne, i had low expectations overall, but when i tried it i had a fckn blast, it's such a big game overall, with so many spells, unique weapons and locations, i even enjoied pvp. You can see the developers put their heart into it.

Dark Souls 2 is the perfect encapsulation of a black sheep game within its own genre. Overall, DS2 is not a bad game, far from it in fact. There were a lot of mechanics, elements, and variety that was expanded upon DS1 that helped it create its own self-identity compared to its predecessors. In a way, I see DS2 as a very good standalone action RPG in its own right. The issue arises when you start making comparisons to the OG dark souls, and even any other Souls-Borne game for that matter. Dark Souls set an almost unmatchable precedent for its world design structure, tone, and overall cult reputation for its difficulty. Dark Souls is by no means a flawless masterpiece, but there were so many unique qualities and elements that were very tightly executed, and had clear intention behind them. Adversely, DS2 feels as if certain elements, environments, and implementations were afterthoughts that were haphazardly incorporated just to expand the idea of ... more. We want more spells, more bosses, more stats, more weapons, more NPC quests, higher difficulties, more enemies, more environments, and more ... everything else. But in that very mentality, the DS2 team at From Software never really took a step back to understand the elements of what made Dark Souls ... Dark Souls. Dark Souls, at its very essence, is sort of a metaphor to overcome adversity and to find your hope within a hopeless world. You are desperately finding purpose while also challenging literal gods in the process. You are a nobody, yet you are also the most important being in this world. Every boss kill, every enemy slain, and every sacrifice you've done felt like a you are contributing to your growth from a nobody to a somebody. But in DS2, the tone right away sets up this message that you are a nobody, and that you'll be punished. Why? Well, because it's freaking dark souls silly! We are the funny and hard meme game. Isn't this what you wanted?! Look, DS2 is perfectly fine as an action RPG, and a super fun one at that when you stop drawing comparisons to its predecessors. But it really fails to draw in the very spirit that the original Dark Souls set, which in turn makes Dark Souls 2 feel out of place within its own franchise.

problem is the kids who started with ds3 think it's the holy grail while it's just so bland and full of needless fanservice, i really honestly dislike ds3, it's not a bad game by any means, but the fanbase just got so awful since then. Ds2 is the best soulsgame RPG-wise, so many builds, awesome weapons, areas and unique bosses. GOAT.

So here's the thing with dark souls 2 hate: it was rigged from the start. What happened was that a lot of "high profile souls players" got their shit kicked in by the game, mostly because they didn't understand the ADP/AGI mechanic, and then started a hate trend for it. After that started, EVERYTHING in the game went under scrutiny, even stuff that also happens in ds1, but people didn't complain about them in ds1. And because most people are just brainless zombies, they just jumped on the hate bandwagon without a second thought. That's how you get most of the complaints. Oh you got hit at the end of a roll in ds2? Bad hitboxes. Oh you got hit at the end of a roll in ds1? You just made a mistake. Oh this enemy that legit has bad hitboxes in ds2 (Velstadt) killed you because it hit you when it shouldn't have? The game has bad hitboxes. Oh this enemy that legit has bad hitboxes in ds1 (Titanite Demon) killed you because it hit you when it shouldn't have? You weren't paying attention. Oh this obvious smash attack that obviously has splash damage hit you further away than the animation might suggest in ds2? Bad hitboxes. Oh this obvious smash attack that obviously has splash damage hit you further away than the animation might suggest in ds1? What are you an idiot? The attack obviously has splash damage frames!. And on and on. In fact most of the "bad hitbox" complaints in ds2 are actually just low agi issues. 99% of the time, if you watch somebody's stream/video of them complaining about bad hitboxes, if you go frame by frame, you can see that they're actually getting legit hit by the attack, but they THINK they shouldn't get hit because they're rolling, even though they have low agi, which means fewer s. There's also an issue with the engine dark souls uses (issue which I believe is present in all fromsoft games including elden ring) where, if you're hit with a grab attack, it SHOULD interrupt any animation you have and put you in the grab. However, the dodge roll animation doesn't get interrupted for some weird reason. So what ends up happening, is that your character is hit by the grab attack, but continues their roll animation, when that ends, your character gets pulled into the enemy's grab and people rage about this. You can see this happening A LOT to people fighting ds2's Persuer. But again, this is an engine issue and it happens in every souls game, it's just more noticeable in ds2 because it's possible to have lower s for dodges. It has lingering damage frames that make no sense. Ds2 also has some lingering damage frames, but it's NOWHERE NEAR as many as ds1, and nowhere near as bullshit. For instance, in one of the videos I posted above, you can see how the butterfly's explosion already happens, player walks towards it after the explosion visually finishes, and gets hit by it regardless. This also happens a lot with big enemies that have huge smashes, like Taurus, especially Ceaseless, but weirdly and stupidly enough, EVERY humanoid enemy that has a forward stab attack (the rapier balder knights come to mind) have lingering damage frames on them, and they make absolutely no sense. If they do a stab attack forward, and you come in from the side AFTER the motion stopped (so that they only have the blade extended but not moving), there are still a few lingering damage frames, and you can get hit by touching the side of the blade and you're pushed forward as though you were stabbed... Then there's the issue of "ganks", which I'll only say this: if you actually go ingame and COUNT the number of ganks in both ds1 and ds2 (and also ds3 just for shits and giggles), you will see that on average, ds1 and ds2 are about the same if you account for the fact that ds2 is about 2 times bigger than ds1 (and ironically ds3 has THE MOST ganks in the souls series, but nobody complaining about it there because there was no hate bandwagon for it). In fact, if you actually count the number of inescapable ganks, the ones where you can't pick them off one by one, then ds1 has MORE ganks than ds2... Ironic, isn't it?

I get liking DS2, but Scholar of the first sin?!? That version is so unbelievably bad. It’s unfair the entire way through the game and so poorly balanced that it’s more frustrating than anything. Like the scholar edition is insane and it’s impossible to make me think differently after playing it. I’ll still watch the video though

I quit dark souls 2 from how much BS there was , actual first game that made me rage Uninstall , but i want to give it another go , after i finish dark souls 3 or elden ring

Dark Souls II is a very flawed game, and people had a rough time learning the hard way that its veeery different compared to Dark Souls I. I mean if you dedicate a stat that determines how many i I-frames you get when you roll. Imagine how fucked that is for your muscle memory??! If you want a lot, and I mean a lot, of content with a sorta scuffed souls formula then Dark Souls II is no doubt a must for ya! It will always have a special place for me personally
