Comment I wrote somewhere else that explains, in part, why France, Germany, and to a lesser extent Italy, always do well: tri-colour flags are easier for the hivemind of users to rally behind and build, so they are able to rapidly gain territory early. They also have a well-organised core of users (especially Germany), which isn't only good for build speed of their own flags and artwork, but it helps with allowing other communities' artwork to be built on their flag without it being hindered. Especially since tri-colours flags are simple and act better as a background for other artwork. This means their flags get defended by multiple communities that have artwork on their flag. They are also considered a less controversial country, which means their flags experience less extended targeted attacks in the first place, allowing them to spend more of their pixels on continued expansion. It has been like this for every r/place. These advantages are exemplified by the fact the USA, which is rather patriotic and is the largest single user group on Reddit, only has a couple of flags too. The previously mentioned advantages are just that big.
