2000 Sportiva: The Sexiest Alfa NEVER Made

  • Alfa Romeo's long history is littered with broken dreams: tantalizingly beautiful vehicles that, for one reason or another, never became a production reality. One such vehicle is the 2000 Sportiva from 1954: perhaps the sexiest automobile that Alfa Romeo never made.
    #alfaromeo #classiccars #history #bertone
While the 1900 Spider was essentially an all-out racing car, devoid of any weather protection and with little consideration for practicality, the 2000 Sportiva was intended as more of a Gran Turismo, capable of similar performance but offering a minimum degree of comfort for road use.
Although Alfa Romeo toyed with the idea of a limited production of the 2000 Sportiva, going so far as displaying it in the Turin Motor Show as late as 1956, it was not to be.
The Milanese company, by then, already had its hands full trying to keep up with the strong demand for the new Giulietta and could not spare the resources needed to go ahead with the 2000 Sportiva, of which only two examples were ultimately built.

What a beauty. This is what upsets me about Alfa Romeo, too many stillborns, they could have made wonderful sports cars to rival the likes of Porsche and Ferrari, but rarely did they get past the design stage. The only ones I can think of, that did, are the Montreal, the GTV 916 and 8C Competizione.

The Disco volante only around 3 - 5 made, Giulia TZ1/TZ2 were race cars, as was the giulietta SZ, the sprint veloce is a coupe version of the saloon, 33 Stradale only 18 were produced. So much of the car is right. The front/mid engine location... the inboard rear brakes... It is quite a thing, technically and aesthetically. And the numbers are pretty impressive for the mid-50s.
I'm not sure it is THE most beautiful Alfa never put into production, but it is certainly one of them.

When I see these beauties, I cannot think about the fact that in other fields (see horology and recently also for motorcycles) there is a big trend of repropose these very same "old" designs in modern versions (for horology just look at Tudor BlackBay success, or Vacheron&C. 222 recently resumed, for motorcycle look at the Triumph "modern classic" lineup, to the Ducati "sport classic" ones, to the BMW heritage ones and so on). I wonder why they can't do something similar in the car industry. There's so much good stuff to pick from the past that it's really unbelievable they didn't do it yet apart few (and successfully!) examples like for the new 500 or the Mini.

      I think pure coincidence.
When it came out it was incredibly advanced in time, a few years later its design had become a common heritage of the European automotive scene.
What you express I believe happened in the case of the "Disco Volante" in relation to the later Jaguar D Type.
Not to mention the introduction of the wedge line in the 1970s.
The fact is that after the war its refined mechanics made it the most used brand by coachbuilders to propose the new lines and this was reflected in the subsequent series design.
