  • The #AlfaRomeo 33 Stradale is widely considered among the prettiest cars ever made, and rightfully so. Its gorgeous curves have transcended time and fashion to keep fascinating enthusiasts and casual onlookers alike year after year. What if I told you that the man who designed it died in relative poverty and was forgotten by the rest of the world? #design #history
    This is the incredible story of Franco Scaglione, one of the greatest automobile designers of all time.

    Very often you could be forgiven for only naming the styling house, whether it be Bertone , or Pinnifarina , Zagato or otherwise, but it is Matteos extra detail that brings to light the actual individual designer who worked for one of these styling houses. A very interesting but sad story , not only for his life being cut short , but also to think how his talent could have been displayed on future designs . Thanks for this one , merry Xmas and happy new year

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад +11

      Thank you!!!!
      The likes of Bertone and Pininfarina weren't interested in revealing those who worked for them, so the names of these "unsung heroes" started getting recognition only after their careers ended. However, such secretiveness muddied the waters quite a bit, and it's not always easy to attribute each car correctly. For example, most writers still believe the Aurelia B20 to be a Pininfarina design... Although it wasn't ;)
      Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

      As italian, I like to suggest that what F. Scaglione designed was obviously by his genius, but also the "genius" of italian style tradition.
      Italian art is not just Giotto, Raffaello: every little church has a minor Giotto, fruit of a "school" that makes great the whole country. Another example: italian chefs are just a peak of a culture that provide, in each house, a great chef (mother, uncle etc)
      Obviously, imho

    I was lucky to contemplate the 33 stradale on the flesh, almost literally. It's amazing to see it, there is not any rupture in her design, nothing to change, can't be better. If you need to describe it your hands move as if you are describing the body of a perfect woman, with all the subtitle courves in an armonious place. An emotional car.

      Personally, I don't even own a TV anymore: RUclips is chock-full of brilliant creators putting out amazing content about pretty much every subject, so I hardly feel the need to watch TV. I'm having a great time putting together these designers' biographic videos, and I'm definitely going to produce more, as it's a kind of content that's pretty much unique, as far as I've seen. So I'm very happy you enjoyed this one!

    I've been a big fan of Italian designed cars since I was very young. I always wanted to go to Italy to design cars. Marcello Ghandini, and Gorgetto Gurgaro were my heros growing up. Mr. Franco Scaglione deserves much more attention than he gets. Thank you.

    Another cracking post Matteo - thank you. The Stradale 33 (along side the Maserati A6GCS) are my favourite looking cars of all time. Designed at a time where practicality was way down the list and style was the number 1. Good to see Scaglione getting some credit - he was a shining light amongst many other talented designers who sculpted Italy's place in the world of beautiful automobiles.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад +4

      Thank you for your appreciation! Yes, those were the days when designers could pretty much do as they pleased, and Scaglione used that freedom to the fullest, creating timeless works of art that keep inspiring people today.
      Speaking of regulatory issues: only the first two Stradale made had four headlights, and the front was slightly redesigned with just two headlights afterward. Why? On the four-lights examples, the lower elements sat too low for homologation :)

    Franco Scaglione merita questo omaggio, e merita anche l'apprezzamento e il riconoscimento di tantissimi estimatori stranieri che (come possiamo leggere nei commenti) hanno ben presente chi era questo stilista e quali capolavori ha disegnato. La sua firma tipica era il cosiddetto "muso picchiante", che lui cercava di inserire in quasi tutte le sue creazioni. Quella 33 gialla, tra le altre, è una scultura degna di artisti come Michelangelo.
    Franco Scaglione deserves this tribute, and also deserves the appreciation and recognition of many foreign admirers who (as we can read in the comments) have in mind who this designer was and what masterpieces he designed. His typical signature was a "tilted downwards" front bonnet, which he drew in almost all his creations. That yellow Alfa 33, among others, is actually a sculpture, worthy of artists such as Michelangelo.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад +2

      La 33 gialla non é di Scaglione, però! Quella é di Pininfarina, disegnata da Fioravanti su uno dei 5 telai 33 non utilizzati per le vetture di produzione.

    • @Wakeupproductions
      @Wakeupproductions 2 года назад

      @@Matteo_Licata hai ragione, la rossa è di Scaglione. Della gialla avevo il modellino da piccolo, comunque sono tutte delle opere d'arte come solo i designers italiani sanno realizzare.

The 33 Stradale is, weirdly enough, more popular now than it's ever been, due to Alfa Romeo using it extensively in its promotional material. As I explained in the video, it barely sold in period, and was rather quickly forgotten by everyone except the most ardent Alfa fanboys.

    You have created such a passion with your wonderful video's and fantastic VO's that I've bought a 916 series Spider a few wks ago....just hope I'll find parts for it if ever I need.
    Absolutely love your vids and looking forward to more. Bless you

      Wow! I'm glad to be partly responsible for you getting a Spider. Parts for Italian cars tend to be an issue, but there's some hope: enough "916" cars have survived, and enough attention they get from collectors, that there should be a market for some reproduction items, further down the line.

    Thank you so much for this. I tried to see the BAT cars when they were at Sothebys last year , but it was impossible. Scaglione was a brilliant man and it's so sad that he died unrecognised in this way.

    I think the Alfa Romeo Stradale is the best looking sports car and would purchase one if I had the money. I was given a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce in 1968 and still have the car which was restored in 2014. I also restored a 1957 Alfa Romeo Sprint Normale and 1961 Alfa Romeo SS which were all designed by Franco Scaglione.

    Franco Scaglione was a designer artist in its purest form. He was in pursue of stilistic perfection and couldn't care less about any practical use or applications of the objects he designed. The BAT cars are a perfect testimony to this. What I heard is that this is the main reason why he left the position of Bertone's chief designer (to be replaced by a 21-year old kid named Giorgetto Giugiaro). Scaglione wanted absolute artistic freedom, while Nuccio Bertone needed to create car designs he could actually sell to car manufacturers. Funny you brush over this aspect in your further great video!

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад

      Well, I didn't go into the details of Scaglione's departure from Bertone because the circumstances aren't all that clear. Most accounts, however, coincide on it being not an amicable separation... Which is believable, given we're talking strong-minded Italians here :)

    Scaglione è stato davvero davvero un genio assoluto. La figlia, anche ella in povertà, ha sempre cercato di tenere alto il nome del padre, e ancora ci sta provando con una bella pagina su Facebook.

    Nobody can convince me otherwise, the 33 Stradale is the best looking car ever made. Given how few are remaining and it's unique distinctions I'm honestly surprised how it's not a $40,000,000+ car.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад

      Well, it may well be a 40 million+ car... But they some to the market so rarely, that's difficult to price them. After all, only 12 cars were made, and at least one (the Alfa museum one) isn't available. I know the number one is in Japan, another I've seen it at Villa d'Este a few years ago... No idea where the others are or even if they all survived.

      @@Matteo_Licata I'm pretty sure there was one on a French auction site for €20MM+. But yeah, it's very hard to track. I bet there are private sales we don't know about.

    Another great video Matteo. It's sad when people are not recognised for their achievements when working for major companies all because of the brands associated with the major design companies. Designers should be awarded by having their names being recognised by the industry first, then the company they represent. This happens a lot in my industry (food production and packaging) where a company employs an artisan to make a product for them, only to reap the rewards when entered into an annual award with no recognition for the "actual" producer. Sad.... 😞😞

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад +1

      Well, I'd say it's the way of the world: after all, Bertone and Pininfarina "sold" their name, and had no interest in publicizing their designers. Nowadays some car designers do get visibility, but that's no better, as these people often take credits they don't deserve: cars now are designed by large teams, and it's often unfair to credit just one individual within the team.

    An engaging and affectionate portrait of the man. Thank you.
    I knew the name but have only now viewed his complete portfolio of designs. It is a small and highly eclectic list, but most are striking and beautiful.
    Thanks for the video.
    None of the cars is familiar to me beyond a few pictures in books or magazines, but I am glad to have learned a little about the man.
    Grazie

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 года назад

      Thank you! Unfortunately, not many of Scaglione's cars are easily viewed in person: most belong to private collections, and are out only to high profile events... Which is a pity, as I said in the video. Especially about the BAT cars: those belong to mankind, like a Michelangelo sculpture, and should be treated as such: displayed by a public museum for regular people to enjoy and be inspired.
