United Airlines killed a woman by destroying her customized wheelchair designed around her spinal injury. They made her sit in a regular manual wheelchair for five hours until she allowed to leave. She felt so terrible, she went to the hospital and died soon after. Her name is Engracia Figueroa if you want to learn more about her. She was, by all accounts, a great person and disability activist.

There are so many people who rely on wheelchairs and other mobility devices that you'd think the airlines would have better policies to protect them. Not only because they are expensive devices, but because the people that use them need them to be able to function.
Stuff like this is the reason my mom doesn't want to fly anymore, The first time she did her wheelchair was LOST and they said they could get her a replacement one, but she has wounds on her hips and cannot just sit in any wheelchair, she is also quite small and wouldn't be able to move properly in any old wheelchair. She REFUSED to leave this plane for 2 hours at Amsterdam airport. Eventually, one of the pilots just got enough and went down to check the cargo for himself. He returned with the chair like 30 minutes later. The second time she took a flight they broke parts including the back of the chair (probably by handling it poorly) and it took a month to get it properly replaced, meaning she had a shitty back rest and was in pain cause of that for a month :/

My brother works in baggage handling at the local airport. He said it's often a struggle to get people to stop working like that. Got himself two promotions by simply not acting like this.

Its not just the price of the chair. That how people get to the toilet, walk, travel, get food, everything you need yo live... If you cant do those basic things imagine what else you can't do such as work, get to appointments etc. I'm sure many people could borrow a basic chair but a lot of chair users aren't basic chairs, most are custom or are tailor-made in some cases.
Ramp Supervisor here, I can 100% confirm that all airline training tells us how to properly load and handle mobility aides. I tell my agents “handle that like it’s your own, you throw it, we have problems”

We have a trainer for our FBO, so it’s their job to make sure all training is done, but ultimately it’s each agents responsibility to do it. My job is to make sure those regulations are followed when serving airlines

I can’t tell you how many times my mom has had airlines break her chair 😡 and once the staff at an airport made me walk without my crutches through the security when I was having a bad day and couldn’t quite do it. I was in agony and fell and the guy who took my crutches said “so dramatic”. He didn’t see his supervisor behind him who came over because my husband went to complain. Yeah, I was told he was suspended without pay and it was the second time he had done this and he broke the crutches of the first person he did this too. There is such a thing as respect for others’ things and dignity for the people you’re helping.
Imagine if they did this with someone's legs. Just walked up to someone with a bat and mashed em in the shins. Then played ignorant like, "well we didn't BREAK your legs, you can still walk! They're hardly damaged at all! Those bruises don't look THAT bad, it's just scratched up a tiny bit!" 😤

An airline broke one of the brakes on my wheelchair a few years ago... Then they forgot it on the plane and I was sitting there forever waiting for the pilot to find someone to get the wheelchair (the staff went home).
For real, that's why I am afraid to travel by plane. If I arrive at my destination and my chair ends up broken, I'm 100% screwed! Those jerks should be fired for being so careless. They have no clue how terrifying a situation like that can be.
All wheelies: there exists simple tie down systems to keep your wheelchair intact in all stages of travel everywhere. These tie downs do NOT contain metal of any sort and should be safe to keep the frame and wheels safe from external force, gravity falls, momentum movements so we wheelchair users need to do our part ALSO. Also, when checking in luggage ask staff to have it placed securely and for suitable tie downs and knots to secure all parts to minimise risk as much as possible.
This should be within a training manual though. Its like having to be told thank you, its just common sense. The problem is that peoples wages are too low and they just don’t care/lost respect for humanity and I don’t even think its a conscious thing. I’m sure the people above them are constantly complaining for them to unload quicker and short cuts are taken to appease the higher ups. 😢

I work for Southwest and the only thing allowed on the slide are bags. Wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, etc have to be walked down the stairs. If the wheelchair is too heavy we call a supervisor to help us walk it down the stairs or use a powered lift to lower it slowly to the ground
They treat it like it's a chair and not like it's literally somebody's legs. I hope all of them end up in wheelchairs so that they can have their own experience flying and see exactly what it's like. People in wheelchairs and handicapped people have a much more expensive life than regular normal people. So something that they save up so that they can get around to break that is an absolutely terrible thing. And then the replacement isn't going to be as good as what they originally had. I don't understand it because people who walk around don't need to buy extra appliances and devices just so they can walk. Here's a purple example you get done with your flight and you need a ride home so you get an Uber and you sit in the backseat of a sedan and you put your luggage in the trunk however a person with a wheelchair now needs to pay more money cuz they need a Vancouver and somebody who's willing to put their equipment in the van. Every single thing has a hidden cost for somebody who's handicap.

Crazy! This makes me so mad. I was rushed to a&e (ER) they couldnt get my electric wheelchair into the ambulance and ended up breaking the frame. I had to wait 6 months for my new chair.
What security and safety issues? Let's be honest here, it's about money. A wheelchair takes up space and requires a way to secure it and it's user into place. My husband and I travel by train a lot and in the space they have allocated for his wheelchair they could easily have 4 more seats. If only there was a law that forces the staff to put wheelchairs in a big wrapping bag that's weighted at the bottom. A least with non-powered chair, it would create enough friction and stop the issues of the chair rolling and tumbling.

Lyft drivers, uber drivers, veyo....ect ... They all sometimes try slamming the trunk to force it closed with my walker in the back. It has warped the wheels and now the brakes squeak. Please people be careful with things that are expensive and help others get around!!!!!
They need some type of machine that latches to the chair to slow it down so it doesn’t cause an impact like that because that can break the wheelchair. Maybe a tensioner attached to a rope or some sort of belt attached to a motor that goes up and down. May take a bit longer but it’s better than damaging much needed property

I once had a taxi driver kick my wheelchair into the trunk of the car 😮 when I got home I realized that the left front wheel was not touching the ground as much as the right, and as a result it just kept shaking whenever I was moving around 😡

I don’t understand how that lazy looking ramp agent couldn’t have intercepted that wheelchair as it slid down. He just washed it slide down and go over the thing. What a lazy person but then again, it’s American Airlines.
What do you want them to do with it though? Walk down the narrow stairs so they can use the wheelchair when they fall and can no longer walk? Or slide down the ramp with it? Yep the amount of things that I've had broken or misplaced because of Airlines being a wheelchair user. In their defense, they're not hired because of their intelligence.😂 Also, wanted to ask you from a perspective of somebody who's newly disabled. What do you think of all the people who say it's inspiring to watch you? Me as a lifelong disabled person, I find it kind of patronizing. Especially when they say good for you. like I'm supposed to just be held up in a home somewhere, feeling sorry for myself. I think it's more in the way they say it. Like they're speaking down to me, as if I'm a child.
Why don't they just put a leash on the chair so it doesn't slide so fast. Or make a better way of sliding items down the ramp especially wheel chairs or fragile items.

Last time I flew when I was coming back from Houston. They said the plane was not big enough to fit my wheelchair in to the cargo so me my mom had to wait five hours to board the next plane that would be big enough to hold my wheelchair in the cargo And my mom worked miracles to get us in first class

It puts him in a messed up position. If he tries to stop the chairs he's going to e injured himself. It sucks to have to watch the DME bounce around and not be able to do anything about it.
Crazy! This makes me so mad. I was rushed to a&e (ER) they couldnt get my electric wheelchair into the ambulance and ended up breaking the frame. I had to wait 6 months for my new chair.
This is crazy. Why aren’t airlines required to have a place to secure chairs in the cabin like buses and trains?

What security and safety issues? Let's be honest here, it's about money. A wheelchair takes up space and requires a way to secure it and it's user into place. My husband and I travel by train a lot and in the space they have allocated for his wheelchair they could easily have 4 more seats. On a plane it's all about cramming more and more people into the limited space and one of the first things to go is true accessibility. @@davidsmiths5471

I worked at ti lite now perobile its a non motorized wheelchair company they are super expensive wheelchairs. That video is horrifying to watch. That is the most important thing to a person who cant walk. It’s disgusting and those airlines companies should do better. If i was in a wheelchair i would be forced to buy a seat next to mine to put my chair because i would never trust them with a wheelchair

If only there was a law that forces the staff to put wheelchairs in a big wrapping bag that's weighted at the bottom. A least with non-powered chair, it would create enough friction and stop the issues of the chair rolling and tumbling.

The fact that this can be someone's lifeline & they treat it like it's nothing. They can't just be ordered off Amazon & received in two days. These wheelchairs are often custom, expensive & a pain in the neck going back & forth with doctors & your insurance to get the cost of it covered
wheelchairs are like an extension peoples bodies and should be treated as such, seeing this make me so furious!!

Lyft drivers, uber drivers, veyo....ect ... They all sometimes try slamming the trunk to force it closed with my walker in the back. It has warped the wheels and now the brakes squeak. Please people be careful with things that are expensive and help others get around!!!!!

You don't need your luggage to walk though.
They need some type of machine that latches to the chair to slow it down so it doesn’t cause an impact like that because that can break the wheelchair. Maybe a tensioner attached to a rope or some sort of belt attached to a motor that goes up and down. May take a bit longer but it’s better than damaging much needed property

I worked for an airline and a co-worker THREW sm1’s luggage @ me to load & it hit the ground bcuz I walked away! It was THE WORST EXPERIENCE & job I’d ever had!
This is why i use south west although i dont use a wheelchair i think its so much better even though a few things have happened.
Southwest? Really...I wouldn't think they'd be great. This was surprising seeing AA considering they aren't a discount line (not that this is ever acceptable)!

I once had a taxi driver kick my wheelchair into the trunk of the car 😮 when I got home I realized that the left front wheel was not touching the ground as much as the right, and as a result it just kept shaking whenever I was moving around 😡
God forbid he put his hand out to stop it.
I worked for American Airlines, sad how it would take 15 minutes or more just to get an isle chair to the gate so the passenger could finally deplane to make it to his/her connecting flight.

What do you want them to do with it though? Walk down the narrow stairs so they can use the wheelchair when they fall and can no longer walk? Or slide down the ramp with it? I don’t see many better options. Proposing a better method would be useful. Way more useful than shaming two workers for doing what they are supposed to.

Also, wanted to ask you from a perspective of somebody who's newly disabled. What do you think of all the people who say it's inspiring to watch you? Me as a lifelong disabled person, I find it kind of patronizing. Especially when they say good for you. like I'm supposed to just be held up in a home somewhere, feeling sorry for myself. I think it's more in the way they say it. Like they're speaking down to me, as if I'm a child.
Why don't they just put a leash on the chair so it doesn't slide so fast. Or make a better way of sliding items down the ramp especially wheel chairs or fragile items.
Well if they get a lawsuit eventually because they jacked up somebody's wheelchair and it caused an injury upon the injuries they already had maybe then they would think twice about how they handle people's wheelchairs after that🤨🤨🤬🤬

Last time I flew when I was coming back from Houston. They said the plane was not big enough to fit my wheelchair in to the cargo so me my mom had to wait five hours to board the next plane that would be big enough to hold my wheelchair in the cargo And my mom worked miracles to get us in first class
